Another issue discussed at the Convention was the importation of enslaved Africans to America. At the time of the Convention, most states had already outlawed the slave trade. However, for most Americans it was not an issue of right or wrong. It was about money. Many Northern shippers did not want to end the slave trade because they made a profit when they sold the enslaved Africans to Southerners. In the South, only North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia still imported slaves from Africa and the Caribbean. Even these three states had outlawed and discouraged the trade at times.
