The reason I believe this is because these steps above describe exactly what slave masters did in order to change the whole mindset of a slave, and get them to comply to the religions that were unknowingly being forced upon them. For example number four on the list describes “the manipulation of the totality of the person's social environment to stabilize behavior once modified”. Often speaking bad things in the name of the government can get you in a lot of trouble, even if it is the truth. The government doesn’t care about honesty towards its people, it cares about control and power. If we as a people, particularly people of color, had a say in how our country should work, things wouldn’t be the way they are now. Our religion would still be our own as a black society, and not this fabrication of a religion. We would praise to our original gods and know of are true culture, and who we really are in this world; because it was not just slaves. We as a black community do not know our past in depth, so it is way easier for us to give into Europeanized religious views. Since we don’t know what to question in religion, and are not taught what to question, we bow down to every word in the bible. Think about something, the “white” Jesus… He was beaten, hated, and killed for no reason, does that not sound like a posterior black slave to you? There is only one example of an “organization” I can think of truly changing the mindsets of black people. This “organization” comes in the form of a person named Dr.Malachi Z York, who professes the original teachings of Africa, and gives insight into who we truly are as black people. He has been imprisoned and sentenced 135 years, allegedly for child molestation. Being a black man, with the kind of knowledge he held, and sharing that knowledge of who black people are, of course the system would bring anything against him, in order for him to shut his mouth. We need more people like Dr Malachi to spread our truth and to wake up our black community. Slave owners use generations of slavery and mental control to convert slaves to the belief God sanctions and supports slavery. They teach that, “ man may properly be a slave; that the relation of master and slave is ordained by God” (Douglass 13). James H. Cone is the Charles A. Briggs Distinguished Professor of Systematic Theology at Union Theological Seminary in New York City. Dr. Cone probably is best known for his book, A Black Theology of Liberation, though he has authored several other books. Dr. Cone wrote that the lack of relevant and “risky” theology suggests that theologians are not able to free themselves from being oppressive structures of society and suggested an alternative. He believes it is evident that the main difficulty most whites have with Black Power and its compatible relationship to the Christian gospel stemmed from their own inability to translate non-traditional theology into the history of black people. The black man’s response to God’s act in Christ must be different from the whites because his life experiences are different, Dr. Cone believes. In the “black experience,” the author suggested that a powerful message of biblical theology is liberation from oppression.
For most American’s especially African Americans, the abolition of slavery in 1865 was a significant point in history, but for African Americans, although slavery was abolished it gave root for a new form of slavery that showed to be equally as terrorizing for blacks. In the novel Slavery by Another Name, by Douglas Blackmon he examines the reconstruction era, which provided a form of coerced labor in a convict leasing system, where many African Americans were convicted on triumphed up charges for decades.
The film “Slavery by another name" is a one and a half hour documentary produced by Catherine Allan and directed by Sam Pollard, and it was first showcased by Sundance Film Festival in 2012. The film is based on Douglas Blackmonbook Slavery by Another Name, and the plot of the film revolves around the history and life of African Americans after Emancipation Proclamation; which was effected by President Abraham Lincoln in 1865, for the purpose of ending slavery of African Americans in the U.S. The film reveals very brutal stories of how slavery of African Americans persisted in through forced labor and cruelty; especially in the American south which continued until the beginning of World War II. Moreover, many owners later came to feel that Christianity may actually have encouraged rebellion (all those stories of Moses and the Israelites in Egypt, after all, talked about the liberation of the slaves), and so they began to discourage Christian missionaries from preaching to the slaves. African Americans have taken their own spiritual, religious journey. God was looked upon as a source of peace and encouragement. The community of enslave Africans were able to use religion and spirituality as a way of overcoming the mental anguish of slavery on a daily basis. To a slave, religion was the most important aspect of their life. Nothing could come between their relationship with god. It was their rock, the only reason why they could wake up in the morning, the only way that they endured this most turbulent time in our history.
The black slaves in general held to a different form Christianity that was unbeknownst to traditional orthodox Christianity. As discussed in lecture on February 4, 2014, black slaves held to an interpretation of Christianity that placed emphasis on the Old Testament, and all of its hero’s and accomplishments. The slaves also reinterpreted Jesus Christ, figuring Him into the Old Testament context of an Old Testament King like King David, who achieved many victories upon this earth (Lecture 2/4/14). Many people who hear the name African Methodist Episcopal Church automatically make assumptions. These assumptions are based on the faulty premises that the name of the church denotes that the church is only meant for African-Americans or that it is filled with racist’s teachings. Neither of those assumptions is true. The Africans communities established their own churches and ordained their own preachers who could relate to the struggle of being a slave and the struggle of being a free African in a strange land that spoke freedom but their action said something different.

The development of Black Theology in the United States was one that shocked the nation as a whole. While in slavery, Blacks had to sneak and hold church services.
