Music is very vast and diverse. There are thousands of different types and the styles of music throughout the world. Ranging from western pop music to traditional tribal music on the plains of Africa. These styles of music have different meaning to the people that play them. To some people it is a self-expression, or the music could be gate way to achieving a trance like state. Whatever it is music has a place in our lives and it finds a way to be a part of our lives. With this being said, there is one genre of music that is very over looked and not many people know to much about it, and that genre is Ska. Ska originated from Jamaica and influenced the genre of reggae music. Ska first started showing up in Jamaica in the 1950s – 1960s. When she was asked what traditional means to her she answered “When I think of traditional, I immediately think of the classical that I play with piano, since those composers are from such a long time ago. Either way, I think the older the music you go, and not just to the 1970s and 80s, the more complex the music and you can hear the fight to prove yourself as a composer and develop something new”. She is really pushing her skills any way she can. Learning from past composers and artists and integrating them into her own music. It is truly a pleasure to her talk about music the way she does. The final part of interview Nicole was asked about what she thinks ska means to her audience that she is playing for. The answer was very simple and straight forward “I think a lot of people are looking for something that’s missing, even if it’s just at that point of the day or year, or that one Saturday night.
