INTRODUCTION
Situation Analysis
The world has a lot to offer, too many choices, too many genres to choose from. The world accommodates the greatest avenue for exchanging information, bargaining different products that giving us way to adopt other cultures, perspectives, ideas and information. As various things passes by on earth, the humanity learns to adopt what those things could offer. Humanity could easily be influence by different factors that come along their way. The world that we live in today is slowly infected by Korean dramas. The influences of it are quiet unstoppable and significantly reaching the shore of every sea across the world. It is undeniably shading the perspectives of its viewer, bridging the culture and people of two different races. The wave of Korean drama reaches the shore of Filipino awareness. K drama is influencing the thoughts, emotions and even the tangible aspects of the Filipino who watches K drama. Viewers from various countries and different backgrounds are drawn to k dramas for various reasons. For Americans, k dramas are relaxing and cheerful while Europeans says that, the appeal lay on uncomplicated and romantic plots. Middle East and Muslim audiences are drawn to subtle inhibition of emotions and intense passion without overt sexuality (Korean culture and Information service, 2011). For Asian people, the appeal of k dramas lay on its so-called emotional power which comes from the aggregated themes of family, romance, friendship, mystery, war, and business as well as the way the characters face issues on the love in a tender, emotional and significant than sensual
In this paper I will attempt to discover how cultural differences affect communication in two movies of differing cultures. I will keep the names of the characters formal for both movies and for the Indian movie I will translate their lines to English directly. The first movie is of the Indian culture entitled Quayamat Se Quayamat Tak, which roughly translates to “From Armageddon Till Armageddon.” This has a classic Romeo and Juliet theme. I will focus on what I consider are the three main relationships in this movie: 1) Raj, the main male character, and Reshmi, the main female character, 2) Raj and his family, and 3) Reshmi and her family. The second movie is of the African American culture entitled Boomerang. This is in essence about a lady’s man who is in search for a perfect woman. Along the way to finding Miss Right he romances other women and as soon as he finds who he believes is the right one, she romances him. I’ve chosen three main relationships from this movie as well: 1) Marcus, the main male character, and Angela, the women he ends up falling in love with, 2) Marcus and Jacqueline, the female he believes is the perfect women, and 3) Marcus and his friends Gerard and Tyler. This essay will discuss how the friends of each movie communicate with each other, what good and bad communication behaviors they have, compare and contrast the relationships depicted in the movies, talk about how the theories of friendship in the course text apply to the friendships in the movies, converse about how each film portrays the culture of the characters, and lastly discuss what each film says about the communication habits of their respective cultures.
When it comes to Asian films, the audience can seldom avoid mentioning pure love films, one of the most outstanding film genres in East Asia, featured by delicate sentiment, touching plot and unique aestheticism. In these tear gases the viewers can easily find that pain-recovery complex does exist: unrealistic romance beyond time and space can heal the audience’s pain to some extent. The paper argues pure love in East Asian romance films in crisscross of time and space plays a significant role in relieving historical, national or individual pain through parallel narrative styles, taking Japanese pure love film Love Letter (1995), South Korean romantic film The Classic (2003) and Hong Kong nostalgia film The City of Glass (1998) for example. So the following paragraphs will analyze these films from three aspects: socio-cultural characteristics in each region and parallel narrative styles, as well as the thematic trait of pain-recovery.
Though this movie was made to portray the life in Korea 110 years ago, it really resonated with me because I found it very similar to life in present-day Nigeria—where I am from. The impoverishment of the people and the clear distinction in the social classes was all too familiar. I also observed similar customs as well as unity of the people through a sport. This paper would be addressing the similarity and some of the factors in the movie that I could really relate to or have personally experienced.

Before taking this course, I always looked at films and read books just as the average person does; interesting plot and how long will it hold my interest, but this course gave me an entire different perspective when watching films and reading books. Now that I have taken this course and have watched the required films, the most important thing when watching other movies and reading books, is the meaning behind each scene and how they relate and affect our world. For this paper, I will discuss a book that I read a long time ago, which is She’s Come Undone by Wally Lamb and how this book relates to this course.
“All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players.” William Shakespeare may have written these words in As You Like It in 1600, but Erving Goffman truly defined the phrase with his dramaturgical theory. Dramaturgical analysis is the study of social interaction in terms of theatrical performance. Unlike actors though, who use a script telling them how to behave in every scene, real life human interactions change depending upon the social situation they are in. We may have an idea of how we want to be perceived, and may have the foundation to make that happen. But we cannot be sure of every interaction we will have throughout the day, having to ebb and flow with the conversations and situations as they happen.
Japan, that strange and exotic land in the east, has a complex and interesting history that has shaped and molded its culture into a very unique society today. Of course their customs have influenced their entertainment, especially television and movies. In a day and age where information is free to all through the internet and reliable postal systems these television shows, movies, toys, and comics have made their way all over the world. The reception of Japanese media has had mixed reactions, both good and bad.
During the process of globalization, countries are about to understand others’ culture as well as to realize how one’s culture compares and contrasts with other. Media globalization stands for the process in which film companies deliver images of national cultures to the whole world. In fact, the process of globalization increased the number of global cinema audiences; their aesthetic is having a profound effect on the way that Hollywood films are being made. Traditionally Hollywood is unfair and pernicious in its portrayal of Asian, but things get changed. According to recent figures from the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) to almost 70% of the studio’s annual revenues from box office now come from international markets. Potential overseas customers nowadays determine the style, cast and characters image of a film.
But why is psychology so pertinent to modern drama? Modern drama, specifically, seems to focus on the more dark and twisted things in human nature, and what can be the darkest and most twisted creations besides the mind? C. Bigsby, in his article titled, Drama As Cultural Sign states, “drama has always had the power to engage the present in a way that is less true of other genres.” Again, modern drama especially seems to focus on psychology. It is engaging to the audience, and an interesting new subject to explore in drama. There are far too many examples of psychology used in modern drama to focus on in this essay, but a few to name have been read in class, such as Machinal, A Doll’s House, The Birthday Party and even Angels in America. It is true that every play in existence incorporates psychology into it, but modern plays, and these specifically, make it much more obvious and almost seem to take it upon themselves to purposely make the audience uncomfortable and push the audience into a position where they are forced to recognize some sense of surrealism in life and a basic sense of “screwed-up”ness, as it were, that exists in life.
But we should start out by acknowledging its success. In considering some of the reasons for the recent success of South Korean cinema, two further observations can be made. First, if we pay attention to the international export success of South Korean cinema, we can see that it has carved out a new route. This is based on regional markets, at least as much as Europe and the United States. Second, unlike the successes of the Taiwanese and Chinese “new waves” since the 1980s, it is not based on the old European art cinema model.

The Hallyu Wave is a “wave- like” South Korean trend spreading across the world. The term Hallyu was first used when the Chinese noticed the popularity of Korean entertainment in China by the late 1990s. Since then the meaning of the word has slightly changed to mean the popularity of Korean entertainment as it spreads around the world (korea.net). Korean culture has spread due to multiple factors including the interest for Korean dramas, culture, and popular music, also known as K- Pop. Another contributor to the popularity of Korean culture is the internet. As more people surf the internet many more discover popular Korean culture, and as more discover the foreign culture even more learn to love K- Pop and consequently use the internet to feed their addiction for the Korean popular music.
Korean pop music happens to be very popular in Korea. It is most popular among the youth of Korea. For the purpose of clarity for this one-thousand-word essay, the youth is defined roughly as ages 0 - 22. Now, there is a phenomenon that occurs with Korean pop music and older Koreans. This phenomenon is a distinct characteristic of Korean pop that separates it from the older Korean pop music of the seventies. This phenomenon is that the older Korean people do not understand the words that come out of the mouths of the singers of Korean pop music that pumps out of the music industry of today in the nation of Korea. This phenomenon parallels that of the pop music of the biggest country of North America—also known by many humans as the United States of America—where older people have trouble connecting with the popular trends in music. This might be illustrated by American people who tend to like country music. If it is not obvious, fans of country music like country music because, as the author of this text has heard, "you can understand [the words]". It is also the tendency that fans of pop music dislike country. These two seem to be mutually exclusive musical tastes. In fact, the older pop of Korea, in the opinion of the author of this text, sounds like country just a wee bit. Trends tend to have the effect that older people can’t understand the words that come out of the mouths of the setters of the trends.
