was later on known for pirating and plundering the Spanish ports, however he also helped Queen Elizabeth with dismantling the invincible Spanish Armada, helping England’s expansion into the whole eastern hemisphere and changed the world how it is today. According to Francis Drake, he once stated, “There must be a beginning of any great matter, but the continuing unto the end until it be thoroughly finished yields the true glory” (“Francis Drake”).
Sir Francis Drake, Greatest seaman of the 15th Century, was born and raised in Devonshire, England. He was presumably born in 1544 because of several paintings that he had gotten of himself when he was supposedly forty-two. The documentation on his life was not that accurate and many dates had to be assumed. Drake was the eldest of twelve children, which all of the children were boys. His father, Edmund Drake, was a protestant farmer and his mother, mary mylwaye was not a working women but had her own job as a stay at home mom. During his childhood there were many people who were persecuting christians, catholics, religious people, etc. Due to all the persecution, the family had to flee to a safer town called kent in England. As you may assume he became a “sea-dog” at a young age; 18 as a matter-of-fact and earned a command of his own ship in the 1560s (“Francis Drake History”). As they lived there, Drake’s father apprenticed him to a neighbor who was a master shipman of a barque. A barque is a ship that was used back then for transporting merchandise and other kinds of valuables to France. Drake was exceptionally good at his job and able to be single with no kids, the ship captain had gave Drake his ship, which he named The Pelican as a reward for having good character. This put Drake in control and at the helm of his first ship and thus sparking the infamous Sir Frances
Drake. The start of the hatred towards the Spaniards comes when Drake was just twenty-four and he was on one of his first voyages to a Mexican Port of San Juan de Ulúa. Drake and his cousin, Sir John Hawkins, had traveled together on a relative's ship, which he called the Judith. Drake had been involved with many illegal acts and brought most of it to spain. Drake and Hawkins sailed to Africa and were there to transport slaves from Africa to sell in Spain. The Spaniards trapped them both in the harbor but were “let go” on their ships with many deaths from Drake’s small fleet, which resulted in a defeat for Drake. After the defeat Drake had made a vow to never be defeated by the Spanish again and had vengeance on his mind towards spain. This was just the start of the destruction of the Spanish Armada and the cruelness towards them. One of Drake Greatest adventures started when he decided to circumnavigate the globe with only a mere five ships and about a hundred men. In December of 1576, Drake set out on a new adventure that will forever mark his name in history as arguably one of the greatest seamen. Drake sets sail to the pacific with a plan to raid as many Spanish harbors in an attempt to enter into uncharted waters for the English.

How many Americans recognize the man on the back of the one hundred dollar bill? Do you know who he is and why he is on the back of that bill? If you said George Washington then you are right! It is said that when one begins something that others will follow behind you and in George Washington's case that is correct. George Washington paved the way for many other presidents that followed after him up until the one we currently have today. Without our first president we would not have our current president. George Washington made huge contributions and achievements to our country that still stand today.
Patrick Henry's Famous Speech Give me liberty or give me death. These famous words were uttered by Patrick Henry on March 23, 1775, as a conclusion to his speech delivered to the Virginia House of Burgesses. Within his speech, he uses the three rhetorical appeals (ethos, logos, and pathos) to convey a feeling of urgency toward the changes occurring in policy within the Americas implemented by the British government. He cleverly uses these appeals to disrupt the paradigm that Great Britain is going to let the American people have any liberty. The purpose of this speech is to gain support for a freedom movement from the British government.
In 1775, the American colonists were faced with a question that would lead to everlasting consequences on their newly developing nation. Due to the several unjust taxes Great Britain had forced them to pay, colonial America was torn into two. Those who sided with Great Britain became known as loyalists; however, those believed the colonies should declare independence became known as the patriots. Patrick Henry, a passionate American patriot, advocates to declare war upon the tyrannical nation of Great Britain in the speech “Speech in the Virginia Convention” that he delivers to the delegates at the Virginia Convention. Patrick Henry’s purpose in writing this speech is to inform the delegates that war with Great Britain is necessary and to encourage
The Special Olympics date back all the way to the year 1968. Many see these Games as a time to honor someone who is able to “overcome” a task, but author William Peace sees this as an insulting portrayal of people with disabilities. Peace is a multidisciplinary school teacher and scholar that uses a wheel chair and writes about the science behind disabilities and handicaps. As a physically handicapped individual, Peace is able to observe a negative portrayal of disabled persons. In his article titled, “Slippery Slopes: Media, Disability, and Adaptive Sports,” William Peace offers his own personal insight, utilizes several statistics regarding handicaps, as well as numerous rhetorical appeals in order to communicate to the “common man”
In the year 1873, a speech was given which would change America and women’s rights forever. For one of the first times in history, a woman is the one standing up for political and social issues during the mid-1800’s. Susan B. Anthony was 52 years old when she was fined $100 for casting an illegal ballot during an 1872 presidential election which in turn Anthony refused to pay the fine and fought for the rights of women. Her persistence and eagerness could be heard and felt in the speeches she gave across the country. After her arrest, Anthony gave a speech which was titled "Is it a Crime for a Citizen of the U.S. to Vote?” which approached the inequality that surround the men and women of the United States before 1875. It was time for change and her perseverance came at the right moment. The mutual feeling other women clutched to helped propel her speech and her ideas into action which lead to their being a success in equality and the 19th amendment being added to the Constitution.
If you check your pockets, how many of you have pennies in them? Not many people I assume, that is because most people don't carry around pennies anymore. Denver Nicks from Time.com says
Francis joined the military at the age of 20. Prior to this date (1202), the favoured son showed his parents that he would like to follow his own life, not in the footsteps of his father. After his enlistment, he struggled heroically in one bloody battle, but his troop experienced defeat. Taken prisoner of war, he was held captive for several months, then released and sent home. His parents were joyful and made up to him for the long months of suffering by showering him with affection. Francis probably enjoyed receiving extra money the most from this.

Francis was born with the baptismal name of John, to Peter Bernardone and his wife Pica, in the fall of 1182 while Peter was away. A well to do businessman in fabrics, furs and fine apparel, Peter was not pleased with the baptismal name that Pica had chosen in honor of John the Baptist, so he insisted on the name Franciscus or Francis in English. Francis was brought up in the privilege that Peter’s business permitted and Peter was grooming him to take over this business one day. During this grooming process, Francis came across many classes of people and all walks of life learning from each person. While learning the tools of Peter’s trade, Francis was learning that a life of privilege supported his life of parties, partiers, and an elaborate wardrobe. Even though his parents did not discipline or control his lavish behavior, they were concerned for his lack of interest in Peter’s business. However, Francis did take note of his wealth when a beggar came to his father’s shop; Francis dismissed him, but later saw his actions as greedy and was re...
