Every so often we come face to face with life events that have lasting effects. When faced with these events, some will be able to rebound and move on, but others will not. Events that leave these lasting impressions have the ability to change who we are, they change our attitudes, our personalities and they change our lives. Every so often, these events come to us on such a level they impact far more than a handful of people. Unfortunately as a society we have been witness to several on such a level. The history of the grand RMS Lusitania is one event on this level that left thousands of souls changed forever. The journey of the majestic Lusitania began in 1907. She was louted as being the fastest and most powerful cruiser in the world. She was the source of pride and joy for many. The ship was secretly funded by the British Admiralty with the hopes she could be used in times of war. In 1914 with the beginning of World War I, the Lusitania fulfilled her debt. She was suited for battle and quickly took her place among the other ships fighting on behalf of the British. On April 22 1915, the German Embassy issued a warning to the Lusitania that the world was at war and any vessel belonging to Great Britain or her allies for that matter were to sail the waters at their own risk. The Lusitania set sail from New York on May 1, 1915 and headed east. It will forever be unknown if any of her passengers knew exactly what cargo lay quietly beneath their feet. Hidden amongst the t... ... middle of paper ... ...here and changed our way of life forever. The aftermath of these two attacks changed every aspect of the American dream. Lives changed and faith was put to the test. The American people searched for a way to escape all of the drama. The psychological effects from these two attacks were a struggle for some to deal with and some will forever battle the demons that found them on these two days. The psychologically effects that these tragic events had on the people are and were very much the same and were in no way limited to those directly impacted. Every member of society felt the pain in one way or another and we all became connected to the victims. Despite any similarities or differences that can be discussed between these events, the one undeniable similarity is the fact that out of evil, we were put to the test and we came out the winner.
The USS Indianapolis was a heavy cruiser. She did not have heavy armor which made her vulnerable to torpedo attacks. She had been ordered to sail on July 16, 1945, to deliver a bomb that would end the war. Unfortunately, it sank before it arrived.

De Chaumereys, an incompetent sea captain, achieved his high ranking position due to political influences, and affiliation to the French Ministry of the Marine. He had prior experience as a customs officer for more than 20 years, and served against Napoleon, gaining him favor of the new Bourbon government, and disfavor among the crew. Indeed, Hitler’s plan to defeat the Allies with U-boats was looking very good. For some unknown reason the Allied ships could not defend against the U-boats. With Hitler in control it looked like the Axis powers were going to drive the Allies out of the Atlantic and win the Battle of the Atlantic. With Hitler taking over most of England, and Great Britain trying to hold the Germans off, the United States decides to send war aid to Britain. The United States gave the British fifty old American destroyers (Von Der Porten 171).
The Germans did great damage, and they sunk many of the British merchant ships, (see appendix 1) and if this battle had not been declared, Britain would have been in a very bad situation. Britain was once the world’s largest ship-building nations, and they could easily replace the ships that were sunk but, soon they were not able to keep up with the damage that the German...
More than a year and a half ago, on September 11, 2001, a group of terrorists from the al Qaeda network hijacked four airliners and successfully used three of them to attack the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., and the World Trade Center in New York. These attacks marked the first time in American history that a full-scale attack was executed on our own soil, and they affected the American people on a number of different levels. Americans found themselves shocked that such an event could occur, as well as reeling with grief for the more than 3,000 people who died in the tragedy. Soon, the shock and grief that penetrated the hearts of the American people gave way, in part, to a sense of national pride. American flags waved from every overpass, and “God Bless America” could be heard on every r...
The tragic history of the Titanic, the sinking of the “unsinkable” giant of a ship shocked the entire world and contributed to important shifts in the mass consciousness of the people who lived at that period and assessed the achievements of new technologies and their role. However, one would have been hardly able to predict in 1912 that this tragedy, no matter how significant and meaningful, would leave such a deep imprint on the history of human civilization. The continuing interest in the fate of the great vessel has taken the form of various narrations and given rise to numerous myths enveloping the true history and, in this way, often obscuring the facts related to the tragedy. In recent years, this interest has been emphasized by the dramatic discovery of the wreck and examination of its remains. The recovery of artifacts from the Titanic and the exploration of the site where it had sank stimulated new speculations on different issues of the failure to rescue the Titanic and the role of different factors contributing to the disaster. These issues have been traditionally in the focus of discussions that caused controversies and ambiguous interpretations of various facts. They also often overshadowed other parts of the disaster story that were confirmed by statistical data and revealed the impact of social realities. The social stratification of passengers that reflected the social realities of the period and its class interests determined the chances of survival, with most of those perished in the Titanic disaster having been lower class individuals.
