“America will never be destroyed from the outside. If we falter and lose our freedoms, it will be because we destroyed ourselves.” -Abraham Lincoln From what you have seen or heard from the media or from people you may think that our American society is a utopia, or you may think our society is the most dystopian society in the world. Even though it has been seen as a utopia, it is not ideal at all. This quote shows that the reason we are a dystopia is because we have begun to destroy ourselves. Compared to the society in the book The Giver by Lois Lowry we still have the freedom to choose our jobs, we aren’t forced to take drugs for our emotions. But one thing similar between our society and The Giver society is that they both have the society
Even our society has faults. One significant similarity between our society and the society in The Giver is that both societies have a way of manipulating its citizens. The society in The Giver is controlled because the citizens do not have any knowledge of any other communities. Only the Giver and the receiver in training have some knowledge. In the book Jonas thinks, “...what lay in the far distance where he had never gone. The land didn’t end beyond those nearby communities. Were there hills Elsewhere? Were there vast wind-torn areas like the place he has seen in memory, like the place he had seen in memory.” (Lowry 106-107). This shows that Jonas society does not know much about the other communities because the government does not mention them. This manipulates the society because they are oblivious to knowledge about other places. They do not know what is outside of their society. Our society is also like this. The government uses the media and different public speakers to make us believe a certain opinion. One article says, “Some techniques used by governments and parties/people with hidden agendas include: Paying journalists to promote certain issues without the journalist acknowledging this, or without the media mentioning the sources.” (Shah 3). This is only one of the ways we are manipulated by society. This shows that certain people or the government will pay
It is nowhere near a flawless society. Even though the difference that The Giver society has sameness, and also gets rid of emotions and we don’t do this, we still are manipulated by our government and believe everything because it is a “trusted source”. We believe into lies that break us as a society down. We can’t achieve a utopia no matter what we attempt to
