Both characters from two different books show how both characters deeply wanted to be the perfect family therefore achieving the American Dream. Both Daisy and Linda marry for different reasons. Daisy mary’s Tom because she knows he can provide for her family. Linda mary's because she really loves willy no matter what the situation is. In The Great Gatsby Daisy mary’s Tom because of money and her appearance. In “The Great Gatsby” by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Daisy struggles between her desire to be with someone she truly loves and her rational to be with someone who will give her social and financial stability. Ultimately, Daisy chooses Tom over Gatsby as he is the safer option once Gatsby is revealed to be untruthful, showing that she is predominately interested in a steady life.
Knowing from their different circumstances, he could not marry her. So Gatsby left to accumulate a lot of money. Daisy, not being able to wait for Gatsby, marries a rich man named Tom. Tom believes that it is okay for a man to be unfaithful but it is not okay for the woman to be. This caused a lot of conflict in their marriage and caused Daisy to be very unhappy.
The Great Gatsby, written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, is about a new money man, Jay Gatsby, and his pursuit of acceptance into the upper class as well as to gain the love of Daisy. Daisy does not make it clear that she either loves her husband Tom or Gatsby. This idea is illustrated when Nick, Gatsby, Jordan, Daisy and Tom went to the hotel to have lunch and Gatsby ask Daisy to tell the truth of who she loves. But, “She hesitated. Her eyes fell on Jordan and me with a sort of appeal, as though she realized at last what she was doing—and as though she had never, all along, intended doing anything at all. In the novel, The Great Gatsby, Tom and Gatsby are alike because of their extreme wealth, mutual desire for Daisy’s love, and lack of morals.
Wanting to be with her true love again, she sneaks visits with him without Tom knowing. Just like Myrtle had, Daisy torn into her own marriage. She loved both men, but as soon as it was found out, the men began fighting for her. “I glanced at Daisy who was staring terrified between Gatsby and her husband…” (Fitzgerald 143). This isn’t what Daisy wanted at all. At some point Daisy loved Tom, and it’s very likely that she still does, regardless of all of his cheating. Living a life of riches for so long has affected her with affluenza, blinding her morals as it did to Tom. She’s fallen into the same trap as Myrtle, being stuck between two men, but she still has feelings for Tom.“I saw them in Santa Barbara when they came back and I thought I’d never seen a girl so mad about her husband. If he left the room for a minute she’d look around uneasily and say ‘Where’s Tom gone?’” (Fitzgerald 83). Some people get along and have close friendships, while others cannot stand to be in the same room with someone that they despise. Such as Gatsby and Tom despise each other, but Daisy and Nick are very fond of each other, maybe too fond. In the Great Gatsby there are many different characters and ways they act. Everyone has there own different attitude and personality. Some people may be compassionate and caring and others careless about what is going on around them. Besides, if everyone was the same it would be an awful boring life. In the book “ The Great Gatsby “ there are great amounts of variation in attitude and personality shown within the characters. It states “She’s a Catholic and they don’t believe in divorce.’ Daisy was not a Catholic…”- (Fitzgerald 38). This quote shows that it would be against public morals to divorce Tom. Daisy appears to claim that she is “higher” then divorcing someone. Tom is her husband, a very well-off man that goes off and has affairs, and never attempts to hide the fact. Then there is Gatsby. Ah, Gatsby. The young man she was so in love with as a teenage girl. Tom and Gatsby have many similarities; from the fact that both Tom and Gatsby want Daisy all to themselves to the fact that they both love her. The differences range from how they treat her to how rich they and what social class they are in, to the simple fact that Tom lives in “East Egg” and Gatsby in “West Egg.” Both the similarities and differences between these two men are what ultimately cause Daisy to believe that she is in love with Tom more than she is with Gatsby.

Both novels project the idea of wealth and high-class but also accentuate the search for love. Fitzgerald emphasizes the harm in devoting one’s life to achieving wealth for the one he loves, as Gatsby believes in order to win over Daisy he must acquire a great deal of money. Austen displays the importance of love over looks and money. She details the happiness Elizabeth is able to receive once she marries the guy who has similar wit and sarcasm. Daisy’s main goal is to maintain her social status. She comes from a high status; her voice is even described as “sounding like money” (120). Near the end of the novel, she doesn’t leave Tom for Gatsby even though she truly loved Gatsby. She stays with Tom knowing he has a higher status and more security than Gatsby. Nick describes Tom and Daisy interactions as not happy, but almost satisfied in a way. Nick says, “They weren’t happy, and neither of them had touched their chicken or ale- and yet they weren’t unhappy either. There was an unmistakable air of natural intimacy about the picture, and anybody would have said that they were conspiring together” (145).
