We are not We The American Dream is an ideal associated with the United States based on many opposing assumptions about who Americans are and what can be accomplished when one puts their mind to it. There are many different forms of literature that pertain to the American Dream and all portraying the struggle that it can to take to reach or miss the dream. The Pearl and Of Mice and Men are both novellas written by John Steinbeck about the struggles people go through to reach their goals and both have been associated with the American Dream. Both novellas, and a song by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, are saying that the American Dream is not obtainable for everyone. They have many great songs that relate to current issues relating to the struggle of inequality and the American Dream. In “White Privilege II” Macklemore says, “One thing the American dream fails to mention, is I was many steps ahead to begin with.” This is describing inequality in the song by saying his race (white) played a large part in helping him to get his job. A lot of the song is about how someone’s dream may not be obtainable for everyone because of their race. Another line in the song says, “My skin matches the hero....and if I’m the hero, you know who gets cast as the villain.” He is saying that since he is white he has more rights than those who aren’t. So, the American Dream is not always obtainable for those who are put down by the social norm. This is still a large issue today in society despite all of the barriers that have been overcome in the past decade. This is the reoccurring theme that is shown in both The Pearl and Of Mice and Men.
