Synthesis Essay Being a mother is an extreme difficult task that cannot be perfected, as many will ivetablly make mistakes causing inversable harm to their children. This is the case for both mothers in Elizabeth Bowens " Tears Idle Tears"  and DH Lawrences "The Rocking Horse Winner". Despite being perceived as the perfect mother on the exterior Hester has many internal complications for instance her heartless nature and her superficials desires that she puts above her own children. Similarly Mrs. DIckinson's high expectation for her son causes her to have a cold and cruel attitude, leading to the awful relationship she has with her child. DIckinson is deemed to be a "good-tempered" women with "great control", she has high expectations and maintenance for herself and her expectations for Frederick is no different. She expects Frederick to be able to "care of [her], but his constant crying lets her down. The shame in his crying "almost make her glad that [hisfather] is not here now." The tactics and responses she uses to counteract his outburst of crying is definitely cruel. WHen the crying start Mrs.Dickinson's response is " [Frederick],You really haven't got to be such a baby."(pg.196)As soon as she is fed up with his endless crying she cruelly "walks on ahead"(pg197) , abandoning him in the park and leaving him to reflect on his actions. From the start of his sobbing right to the end, his mother never fully gave him a chance and never asked questioned him why. She was quick to discipline him and quick to cruelly abandon him, leaving him to figure things out on his own. Frederick is never given a chance to be understood because of his mother's exceptions of him and her cruel attitude when he can't fit her
