Similarities and Differences:
Martin Luther and King Henry VIII
At first glance, the lives between Martin Luther and King Henry VIII may not seem interlocked. Bring in the Protestant Reformation, and you see how they shared many similarities, and alongside that, differences. To begin with, both shared a big role in the Protestant Reformation. The two desired to, in some way, change the Roman Catholic Church, albeit with different underlying motives. Luther, in 1517 wrote and nailed 95 theses to the door of the castle church in Wittenberg, Germany in opposition of the selling of indulgences. A Christian monk himself, he held no hostility in his actions, and only hoped to restore the church to what it once was. This wasn’t the case for the
Martin Luther and King Henry VIII are similar in the sense that they both formed new churches, but their ways of going about it and goals were not even close. Luther’s ideas became the basis Protestant Church and Henry’s became the Church of England. Although, the end result of Luther and King Henry VIII’s actions was similar, their intents and actions differed from each other.

Both are very effective as I will show. Jonathon Edward's "{Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God", describes his views of a vengeful God and man as sinners. Martin Luther King's "I Have A Dream" is known as one of the most motivational speeches ever given. I would like to begin by describing what these two powerful speakers and speeches have in common, and will include their differences as well.
The similarity between Susan B. Anthony speech and Martin Luther King Juniors “I Have a Dream” speech is that they are fighting for the equality of America. Susan B. Anthony is fighting for women being able to vote like everyone else. Martin Luther King is fighting for the equality of African Americans. Both just want to see America as an equal place instead of discrimination against others based on race or gender. Even though their message has similarities the way they delivered them was different.
Although president Abraham Lincoln issued the emancipation proclamation in 1862 that gave an end for slavery, white people persisted in oppressing and segregating black people. Life was segregated between blacks and whites: Black people had separate schools, restaurants, theaters, and even transportations. As the oppression increased, some black people started to refuse such harassment. Thus, many movements and marches were launched to bring equality for blacks (Patterson).
During the Reformation, both Martin Luther and King Henry VIII desired to reform the Church, but in substantially different ways, and for very different reasons. While Martin Luther wanted reform in order to achieve freedom from the Roman Catholic Church, Henry VIII solely wanted reform for personal reasons and to gain power. Luther acted towards the good of all and Henry VIII acted towards the good of himself.
Socrates shares similar qualities as Martin Luther King Jr. In comparison, both men exposed their beliefs, methods, and philosophies to convey social change. Socrates and Dr. King rebelled against accepting social norm. Socrates taught his followers to defy tradition and question their knowledge on law, virtue, immorality, ethnics, wisdom, logic, etc. Dr. King encouraged equality and fought to erase racial segregation. Though they faced different circumstances, their motives were the same; they persuaded individuals to think for themselves. Socrates was executed and Dr. King was assassinated, but both men died honoring their principle, despite the public disapprovals and
Socrates and Martin Luther King Jr. have shown and voiced their own and have their own definitions of civil disobedience. Socrates believed in the law as complete truth. He believed that all individuals are to follow the laws. Martin Luther King Jr. believed that the laws had flaws, and that it was our responsibility to get them to change. Would Socrates agree with Martin Luther King Jr. on his acts of civil disobedience? I believe Socrates would agree with Martin Luther King Jr. on everything that he did, except when he actually broke the law which led him to be jailed in Birmingham.
During the time of Henry David Thoreau and Martin Luther King Jr., freedom for African-Americans was relative terminology in the fact that one was during slavery and the other during the Civil Rights era. “Civil Disobedience,” written by Thoreau, analyzes the duty and responsibility of citizens to protest and take action against such corrupt laws and other acts of the government. Likewise, King conveys to his “Letter from Birmingham Jail” audience that the laws of the government against blacks are intolerable and that civil disobedience should be used as an instrument of freedom. Both writers display effective usage of the pathos and ethos appeal as means to persuade their audience of their cause and meaning behind their writing, although King proves to be more successful in his execution.
Machiavelli and Martin Luther were both hugely influential and controversial authors who wrote in times of turmoil. Although they had different focuses, Machiavelli's being political and Luther's being religious, they came to many similar conclusions, this may be in part to their reactions to a similar time period. Both authors saw the importance of looking into the past and using history as a tool to learn from. Luther believed more in returning to the past while Machiavelli saw it as a way to use what worked while learning from past mistakes. Their writings are filled with examples from the past to further their arguments. They were especially similar when it came to human free will, the role of God, and on the governing of the secular state. More specifically, both Machiavelli and Luther believed that there was an element of free will that humans could choose to take control of, and therefore determine their own outcomes; although there was an element of either God or Fortune weighing in. Also, when it came to the secular state, although their motives might have been different, they believed in similar actions that needed to be taken. The most interesting dynamic between the two would have to be in relation to the Catholic Church and how both viewpoints create a compellingly different view of the Church.
Martin Luther was a former Priest/Monk and that saw some corruption in the Roman Catholic Church. Luther tried to bring his concerns to the Church in his writing of the “Ninety-five Theses on the Power of Indulgences.” When these question that Luther proposed to the Archbishop of Mainz went unsatisfactorily unanswered in 1517, Luther started defaming the Roman Church and pushed for the utter destruction of the Roman Church. What started out as an internal reform of Church’s discipline, turned into a war against the Roman Church for their total destruction. This was the intent of Luther’s sermon of 1521.
Heroic qualities are traits that every epic hero should have. The heroic qualities that Beowulf and Martin Luther King shared are the want to achieve something better for themselves and others. These epic heroes have lived life boldly and have died in honor of their quest to achieve greatness. Both made the sacrifice and the fight to help or fight to protect their way of life but in the end made the sacrifice of their life. Martin Luther King relates to Beowulf for the bravery of fighting racial discrimination, the intelligence behind every march they did to draw the attention, the will to die to achieve the goals he worked for.
Martin Luther, also known as the “Reformator,” was a superior asset in the Protestant Reformation. He was born on November 10, 1483 in the town of Eisleben, which was located in East Germany. Luther’s parents were Hans Luder and Margaretha nee Lindemann. His father was a farmer and later became a copper miner in Mansfeld. Martin Luther’s parents brought him up in the strict environment of the Roman Catholic Church. With his new job in Mansfeld, Hans made the decision to move his family there in 1484. Hans expected Martin to become a lawyer, so Luther went to Erfurt in 1501 to study law. Luther received his master’s degree in 1505. Shortly after this, he felt like law was not the right place for him. This act upset his father, not only because he dropped out of the university, but he decided that he wanted to become an Augustinian monk in Erfurt. Luther believed that if he was serious about his religion, he could please and do good works for God. However, once again, he was still unhappy. Soon after his birth, his family moved to Mansfield because of his father’s work as a miner. His father, wanting more security for his promising young son, decided to do whatever was necessary to see that Luther could be a lawyer (Whitford). His father, Hans, was described as a rugged, stern, irascible man. Luther had a difficult childhood as he was mercilessly beaten and abused by his father (Ganss).
