Introduction In both Islam and Christianity there are many scriptural mentions of marriage in the Quran and the Bible because of its importance and how sacred it is religiously. In both religions, a marriage is important because it will lead to a family, which continues a religion and a society.
In Islam, a man can marry a Christian woman but Christianity does not allow Christians to marry Muslims. When it comes to the wedding in an Islamic wedding the groom and the bride do not have to recite the Quran whereas Christians do have to recite parts of the Bible. Above all both religions see the importance of marriage especially in relation to family and it is considered a religious duty. Jesus explains that marriage means a relationship between husband and wife that last for a lifetime. In Christianity the family system is also important, the purpose of a Christian marriage is for procreation. This is similar to Islam in the sense that the creation of a family is a religious duty. Because marriage is a sacrament, adultery is a punishable sin. In Deuteronomy 22:22 God commands that if anyone violates the institution of marriage by way of adultery, that they are to be executed. Similar to Islam, the purpose behind the marriage contract in Christianity is to prevent immoral sexual relations. Marriage is the commitment that lasts until death, that is the only thing that can separate a wife from her husband.
Another significance to Christian marriage is that God ordained a marriage between Jesus and the church , and just like God made humans in his image a human marriage is the earthly image of the relationship between Jesus and the church. It protects her honor, so that they do not reach the age where they have sexual desires. As a result, it protects her honor as a virgin girl, it also allows her to avoid spinsterhood. In the Middle East especially, protecting the honor of the girl is crucial, if her honor is questioned it becomes difficult for her to ever get married and she may result in being shunned from the community.
Before the couple decides to go through with the marriage they go through a betrothal period where they determine if the other is fit for the lifelong commitment. The Prophet Mohammed said, “Have a look at your fiancé as it will contribute to a lasting love between you.” In the Middle East there is no dating, it is the betrothal that allows the couple to get to know one another. To execute the marriage contract, it has to be completed with an ejaab (offer) and qabul (acceptance.)
