The mishandle and corruption of the public funds in Sierra Leone has lead to high unemployment for young adults, a huge increase in basic commodity prices, and an extended amount of insecurity within the sub-region. All those factors contributed to leave Sierra Leone vulnerable to future instability. Even though there has been remarkable reforms since the war that ended in 2002, there are still many problems. Such as poor infrastructure (including roads and energy), low capacity, high death rates among mother’s and children, extensive rural poverty, the impact of global and economic downturns, and regressions in public financial management and governance that still persist today. The children are told they will be killed if they disobey orders or try to escape. They undergo a harsh initiation where they have to kill or injure one of their own who have tried to escape. As the war continued in Sierra Leone, some children have managed to escape .But often children who have been forced to kill and slaughter in their own villages cannot return home. Children who join the RUF are excluded from their families because they fear they will be hunted down by the militia. There is an orphanage for escaped soldiers.
Sierra Leone is rich in diamonds and other minerals and gems. There is a very known illegal gem trade, known as "blood diamonds". They were used for funding conflicts, that perpetuated the civil war. The government has tried many times to crack down on the cross-border diamond trafficking. They are also trying to persuade foreign investors that blood diamonds are a thing of the past.
