Mental disorders can have dangerous and harmful side effects. Shutter Island is a great example of mental illness and highlights many illnesses, like PTSD Another key illness that this movie covers is sleep deprivation. Many people who are sleep deprived have a hard time controlling their mental state Any type of mental illness can cause an individual to handle a situation violently Unfortunately, when anyone’s mental state is broken down, it can cause flashback and hallucination. Many people who suffer from psychological problems are often troubles with insomnia as a side effect because sleep requires a steady mind. These scenes that were confusing at first soon start to unfold as the story goes on. Many flash backs that Teddy was having was of a little girl and what looked to be a grown blonde woman. Each time when Teddy and his partner would find a clue to this missing patient, Teddy would have a flash back. As you get closer to the end of the movie all the flashbacks start to come together and tell the whole story. Near the end, Teddy and his partner get separated and Teddy is forced to figure out his investigation on his own. While trying to get rid of the flashbacks and the voice in his head, Teddy finally realizes what has been happening. He experience’s flash backs and hallucination of traumatic events during his time in the war and at home following his return. Teddy continuously remembers seeing a young woman with her child that has been murdered in a concentration camp in Germany. As well as having flash backs of finding his children dead in their pond. Throughout the movie Teddy was very hypervirulent. He was very on edge and suspicious of his surroundings at all times. For example, every time that he fell asleep he would have a nightmare of events that has happened in his life.
