Show don’t tell Story. There are many challenges in one's life, but one that I have faced was difficult, and I was able to overcome this even at a young age. Responsibilities were taken upon myself every day, and they were able to help me get to the point where I am now.My father wasn't completely present in my life and that my mother had to raise both me and my brother on her own. I was able to see the struggle she was going through each and it that shaped me the way I am. When I came home from school I always had to keep up with my priorities, as a kid all I wanted to do was play video games, but I knew I wouldn't be able to get my homework done. I wrote in my agenda every little event that was going on throughout the school year. When I’d get home I would check my agenda and if I didn't have homework then I would then go the daily chores, and after that, I would play a game or two. It was all about learning how to set your priorities and if you can follow them then you shall be successful in school. …show more content…
As a student you need to be on top of your homework and class work because I have a couple of friends who don't get their class work done and then it becomes homework and this is like a snowball effect because if when they don't end up doing their class work and it becomes homework then all their homework gets piled up, and then they get stressed out because now they have just too much
Describe the most significant challenge you have faced and the steps you have taken to overcome this challenge. How has this challenge affected your academic achievement?
I had to learn to adjust life without my sibling because my mom did not have enough money for them to be with us and adapt to a new culture. During this my mother and I ended up homeless during the winter months, this was the most brutal and embarrassing time of our life. In my teenage life I have overcome many obstacles; Even though we were living in poverty my mother had high expectation for her children and graduating from high school was just the beginning unfortunately I stumble again, I failed my Math Regent and did not graduate but I was determined not to be discouraged .
How to Deal With StressMany students go to school full time, and hold a part time job to earn money for school. Most students have about four classes, and each of the teacher’s of these classes gives an average of about an hour of homework each night; that averages out to four hours per night of homework, plus a part time job. School causes a lot of students stress because there are so many things to do, and so little time to do it. Stress is a normal part of everyone’s life; and is not a disease. It is not necessarily good or bad; however, reactions to stress can be harmful. Lack of time puts the stress on many students, and causes students to often procrastinate because they are constantly trying to meet deadlines and they don’t have the time to work on their assignments. Many students feel their grades are important; they need plenty of time to work on their work so they can do good. I can relate to them because if I get a low grade I get disgusted because I put a lot of time and effort in doing that assignment. But I think that a lot of the stress from school is caused, not only by the teachers, but also from the students to do well. Students put too much stress on themselves. A student just has to learn to manage their time well and just do as good as possible. Stress management involves the effort of that student to make emotional and physical changes.
The overall purpose of Scott McCloud “Show and Tell” is to create the impression that comics are still a valid form of telling stories and communications. He proved his point by making his essay a comic itself. Historically, showing and telling originated together but they became separated over time. Traditional thinking holds that truly great works of literature and art are best appreciated when viewed separately. In his graphic essay he states that pictures and words are not necessarily meant to be two separate forms of communication, but can be combined to create comics. And together, words and pictures are much more powerful.
Throughout the entirety of my life I always have and always will face obstacles: I am a girl, I am African-American, I have a disabled brother, I have a single parent. Though these aspects of my life have created challenges, I am proud of who I am and I love my life. These challenges have molded my character and shaped me to be the person I am today and without these obstacles, I might not have been as driven to succeed, despite what has happened in my life that may have caused me to
Describe the most significant challenge you have faced and the steps you have taken to overcome this challenge. How has this challenge affected your academic achievement?
Everyone has challenges in their life and mine were speech and depression. From preschool to second grade I had to take “special” classes because my English was far more behind than everyone else’s. At the time I didn’t notice anything different, though now I realize that without those classes school would of been twice as hard. I overcame this challenge by simply going to school and learning. I found out that school can help with anything, for this reason I love learning to this day. I began noticing a negative change with myself throughout middle school, which now I classify as my second challenge, depression. I’m still not exactly certain if it is just depression, seasonal depr...
Although homework may seem like drudgery, the hard work that is put into homework may pay off in the long run. In the article, “Does homework really work for students?” Jacqueline Carey, the mother of seventh grade student Micah Carey, stated that “homework gives [students] a good foundation for when they move on further in school” (Johnson). Not only that but according to Donyall Dickey, principle at Murray Hill Middle School, “if students do not acquire things in class, they will acquire them through homework” (Johnson). As we can see homework helps and prepares us for higher grade levels while in primary school that can possibly prepare us for college. It also helps us to remember the materials that were taught in class. Another reason homework can be beneficial is the fact that it can prepare us for tests and the dreadful pop-quiz that a teacher may randomly give us. This fact was proven, according to a 2006 study by Harris Cooper, director of Duke University’s Program in education, in the article “Homework or Not? That is the (Research) Question”. The studies instituted that “students who had homework performed better on class tests compared to those who did not” (DeNisco). Another compelling thing about homework, are the qualities a skills th...
In today’s world, education is more important than ever, and with education comes homework. However, many teachers give too much homework, which makes students extremely stressed. In addition, some are into sports or after school activities, and some have part time jobs they have to work at, which adds additional stress to the already overworked students. Mounds of homework can cause students to be under so much stress that it affects them mentally, physically, and emotionally. Stress can make students sick with colds, stomach aches, high blood pressure, sleep disorders, and/or anxiety disorders (Menninger and Dugan).
Homework offers multiple benefits for real life. One benefit of homework is that it helps the student develop essential skills. While homework may seem like a tedious task, it can help a student comprehend the material. Homework is necessary for more than just a grade; it is an assignment that teaches you valuable life skills. According to “Do students have too much homework?”, homework should lead students to be better at taking what they know and applying it to a certain task. Students tend to portray homework as something that they have to get done without knowing the value that lies behind it. Homework enables the student to recall a certain problem and apply it to another distinctive situation. According to “Do students have too much homework?”, applying knowledge is the most important. Learning is definitely important but what students do with the facts that they learned is essential as well. Applying knowledge allows the students to take a simple fact and relate it to a grander scheme of things. Relating what they know will enhance their creativity and let them see behind the lines of how everything connects.
“I say give the kids a break… Let the kids enjoy life before life gets too tough.” Aggressive homework can have an effect on students and their lives. Excessive homework can bring a strain on family life. You are going to find in this essay how having a lot of homework can have an effect. How does school play a role? School serves as a major role as a social institution. It’s part of our lives and also it is a major priority. Schools should limit the amount of homework daily. Students need to receive less homework rather than excessive, in order to have their minds focus and be able to perform much better in the academics.
Kralovec, author of The End of Homework argues that doing homework during high school has little or no effect on successful study skills of students in college. College students have only a few hours of class a week and lots of daytime hours in which to study. She says the college schedule is nowhere as grueling as in high school. In addition, the average adult does not return home from the office with three or more hours of work to complete (Kralovec). When "busy work" assignments are given carelessly and frequently, it causes students to lose interest in the subject. Negative results can also occur when a student is not able to complete his or her homework. Many times they will resort to copying homework, having others do their assignments, or cheating on tests. Bad habits such as these are likely to follow kids through their lives and have an effect on their moral judgment. With no consequences to these actions students will almost always take the easy way out when it comes to homework
The obstacles I have endured in high school from taking extra classes to graduating on time. Without learning from my mistake, I wouldn’t have the motivation and mindset of pushing myself in my academics. Every now and then, I procrastinate in college and my life outside of school but learn to catch myself of what I am doing. I manage my classes and personal life very easily because being in college is different than high school. I have amount of time in my life to get things done throughout the
As a child I still faced challenges, failure and accomplishment. Throughout elementary school I struggled with my grades. My parents always tried to work with me to become a better student. I had to spend more time on school work then the other kids. I would get so frustrated not being able to my math homework or spelling. I knew I had to study to get my grades up. My mom would always say, “You can’t give up.” This challenge I faced as a child made me become a better student and realize that school was important no matter what grade I was in. Not all challenges I faced were successful.
Describe the most significant challenge you have faced and the steps you have taken to overcome this challenge. How has this challenge affected your academic achievement? Not to sound supercilious but I feel like I have had to answer this question a number of times, I just never seem to have the right answer. But what comes to mind as the greatest challenge I have had to face is a particularly difficult class I took a year ago. When I say difficult I don’t mean the subject matter of the class rather I mean the interactive part of the class. This class pushed me to my limits, am not a loner nor am I a social butterfly, but I had to get rid of my inhibitions if I wanted a good grade in the class. It helped me break out of my shell, I had to learn to interact with virtual strangers and make a good impression while doing so. But the most challenging aspect of the class was writing a reflection essay that included what you felt during an assignment and your impressions on the people you met, this difficult for me because I am not one who expresses emotion well and being able to tell what a person is feeling is not my forte. I am proud to say though that after a few ups, downs and roundabouts I was finally able to put on paper what I felt on the inside. long after the class was over I realized how useful the ability to write down what you feel is, it makes you connect better with your audience and makes the audience feel like they are reading about a person they can
