Should you be a feminist?” In this essay I would like to persuade my readers to consider becoming an activist for women’s rights, or more commonly referred to as “a feminist”. Today’s society seems to be full of slut shaming, misogynistic views and I want my readers to realize that feminism is the cry and movement for equality for women. It’s not an excuse.
B. What is feminism? On dictionary.com feminism is defined as the doctrine advocating social, political, and all other rights of women equal to those of men.
C. What is a misogynist? A misogynist is defined as a person who hates, dislikes, mistrusts, or mistreats women.
A. Rape is one of the biggest issues women face. Not only is it more likely than you would think, but over 89,000 people are raped annually in the United States. The scariest part is that 95% of rapes are unreported. Out of the reported cases 16% are women. Only 3% are men. Now, I recognize that rape happens in men also, but my point is that most of it happens in women for one reason. Men can get away with it. Women are commonly viewed as objects that can be dominated, rather than appreciated. A popular argument against feminism is that women are fighting for special rights rather than equality. Admittedly, this can be true to a point. Radical feminists exist around the world who want to triumph over men and quote “enslave them”. My rebuttal for this would be that feminism has an extremist group that take things way farther than they were ever meant to go and exaggerate the common beliefs just as ISIS does with Islam and the Westborough Baptist Church does with Christianity. All belief systems have that choice group of “those guys who took it way too far and give the whole rest of the group a bad name”. True feminism is not about stomping on all men and elevating women to the very top. It is about
