There has been controversy on transgenders’ and which bathroom they should use. Some people say that transgender people should be able to use whichever bathroom they choose and others say it that they should use the bathroom in which their born gender is, some people have even suggested to have a specific bathroom built specifically for the transgender community. Transgender people should either use their born gender as defining which restroom they use or a single roomed “family restroom. At one point during Barack Obama’s presidency, he supported transgender people to enter any restroom that they claim to be. For example, if a male has male parts but claims to be a woman, he would be allowed to use the women’s restroom. This could happen in public places like schools, movie theaters, stores, or even restaurants. Many people have disagreed with this law, claiming that it is unfair to the true women and men who use the designated restroom that is affiliated with their born gender. According to Dr. Paul R. McHugh, former psychiatrist from John Hopkins University and is also a current Distinguished Service Professor of Psychiatry, sates that transgenderism is in fact a mental disability because there is no biologically possible way to change the gender of a person, which is another reason to why a transgender person could be considered someone with a mental disability. Although, no matter what decision would be chosen about what to do with the transgender and bathroom situation, there would still always be arguments as to what the right decision would
