Social control exemplifies people having to follow certain rules in life, which ends up shaping who they are as a person in the long run. Regulation of group behavior leading to conformity is the goal of social control. Specifically, private schooling is a big example of social control by demanding that students behave in certain ways as being part of a “private group”. Uniforms are a big form of social control for the students because it makes each and every student, no matter what gender you are, follow certain rules to make students look more proper and maintain a degree of order and diminish any differences.
School is a significant tool for social control. Uniform requirements in private school are one example of such control. Because of uniforms students do not get to pick what they get to wear. Uniformity means that each student does not get to express who they are as a person through their clothing. Uniforms tend to make each student look the same to make the

school look better and to make the student look neater. Uniforms make the student socially controlled to behave in a certain way. In the article, Private Schools and uniforms: the facts, As Our Kids The Trusted Source talks about how uniforms is a positive type of social control: “In private schools where everyone is dressed the same, perhaps it is the perfect opportunity for children to have that without the stress of what they wear defining them (2).” This quote informs the reader that uniforms are a very important part of schooling. By taking the variable of dress out of the equation, the student can focus on their school work. It is important to focus on the students identity without worrying about their clothing. Even though some students do not like uniforms, no one is being bullied about what they are wearing since everyone is dressed the exact same. There are many other positive aspects of wearing a uniform.
Because everyone is wearing the same exact thing, no one can make fun of what others are wearing. Uniforms are a good way of keeping bullying away and out of the school. Because uniforms suggest a form of social control, less students are being made fun of because of what they are wearing. The article, Should Students Have to Wear School Uniforms?, says, “Proponents say that school uniforms make schools safer for students, create a “level playing field” that reduces socioeconomic disparities, and encourage children to focus on their studies rather than their clothes (2).” This quote talks about how uniforms exert a control over the student because it removes economic differences among students. A student does not need to be concerned about the newest “style” of dress but rather, just focus on school work. Having a uniform makes the student work and focus on just their school work. Having uniforms eliminates most distractions in
schools. At the same time, social control by uniforms can have many disadvantages. Each student does not get to express themselves through their clothing. Another hardship is that this policy infringes on the students freedom of rights. Uniforms appear that this type of social control is just to address dressing pressures placed upon young students. Social control is a big apart of the world today and is expressed mainly in uniforms in private schools. As Robert Kennedy says in his article, Private School Uniforms and Dress Codes, “Uniformity or sameness implies all sorts of positive things such as expectations, adherence to a standard and the sublimation of self-expression and wealth (1).” Uniform requirements thus are a big form of social control. This means that there are many positives to having uniforms being a type of social control because it can reduce bullying, make the school look better and more proper and make the students look more put together. All in all, uniforms help out the student stay concentrated on their school work and eliminates all clothing distractions. Private schools have many different rules showing social control. Uniforms are a big example of social control that happens throughout many different private schools.
School is also the place where the next actors, writers, artists, politicians, inventors, designers and musicians are trained. School uniforms send a clear early-life message to students that conformity is important and creativity is not, that authority is allowed to abuse it's power and constrain our constitutional right to free speech and expression. Students learn from uniforms that their individuality, political opinions and religious rights are unimportant, as is their education: students are regularly suspended for non compliance to the uniform code even if their school work is excellent. If uniform-requiring schools were actually in 'the business of learning' this would not occur.
School uniforms are a way for principals to know who belongs on campus and who does not. A while back, researchers studied that the reason certain school require students to wear school uniforms is because they feel that it will help stop other students from bulling one another, just because they don’t have on high priced shoes or clothing it shouldn 't stop them from doing what they do best. "The good thing is people judge you on your inner characteristics rather than what you wear," said Nick Duran, an 8th grader and the student-body president at Rogers Middle School (Portner)." Safety is they key, when students enter the school ground, they should feel safe and not think that someone is going to harm them. Students feel as if they have to wear school uniforms it will
Having a mandated uniform policy in place assists in easing the burden of school clothing costs by allowing parents to shop for more reasonable prices, because the clothes will look the same regardless of the brand. School bullying can be reduced by not easily being able to determine the more expensive garments versus the less expensive, eliminating the ease with which individuals profile based on income status. Students who regularly bully other students based on clothing choices will be eliminated, improving student behavior. This policy also allows students to concentrate more on their studies than on the next new clothing fad, resulting in more academic progress. Reducing distractions stemmed from students clothing choices enables students to concentrate on what they are in school to do, which is learn. (“The Pros and cons of kids wearing uniforms in schools”, 2013). Giving our lesser advantaged students the opportunity to wear administrator mandated uniforms allows these children to feel more included and less segregated from those that are from a more advantageous background. Allowing these students to get to know each other based on actions rather than background and status could result in friendships that are more diverse and sophisticated. This could promote more tolerance in our society resulting in more a peaceful
School uniforms should be part of the school systems, because statistics had shown that students who wear uniforms are doing better than dress codes. More students also feel a sense of equality among each other and there are fewer judgments of others. It allows teacher quickly to identify people who do not belong in the building and limit the ways that gangs can identify themselves. School outfit provides students identity, individual spirit, and pride. Uniforms are increasing throughout different schools. School uniforms make students look more formal, and progressively affects student’s self-esteem, discipline, and safety, and develops students be more confident of what they can achieve in life.
In society today, school-age children are under tremendous pressure to fit in with their peers and still perform well academically. I believe that school uniforms at pre-K through high school levels are an excellent way to help children succeed not only in school, but to prepare them for college and the “real world.” Three reasons why I believe school uniforms should be used in all schools is first, they are economic, next, they reduce distractions and finally, they help with social equality. To begin, school uniforms are economic. When schools have a uniform policy, it makes it easier on the children and parents.
At the beginning of the 20th century almost no parent or faculty had any concerns with how students dressed to attend school. Nowadays, though, this is a giant concern among students, parents, and school board officials. Many arguments have been made over the matter saying uniforms should be required and enforced in schools. But, uniforms should not be required as they ultimately eliminate freedom of expression, promote conformity over individuality, may have a detrimental effect on students self image, emphasize the socioeconomic divisions they are supposed to eliminate, and lastly, school uniforms in public schools undermine the promise of a free education by adding an extra expense for families.
By requiring school uniforms in public schools, education will be improved. A dress code will enforce discipline toward learning. Uniforms improve a person’s outlook toward success. Students generally act the way they are dressed. With fewer distractions, students see the school as a workplace for teaching and learning. Students also have less stress in their lives because they are not in a fashion competition. Dress codes also lead to a change in grades. Mainly this happens because the student’s attendance comes up. There is also a change in grades because it is easier to focus when everyone looks alike.
Kids today are under a tremendous amount of pressure and are pulled in so many directions. I believe that uniforms in the school setting can help alleviate some of this. Successful implementation of a uniform policy would, of course, involve support of the student, teachers, and parents, which I will address later in this paper. Research suggests that uniforms can be beneficial in schools because they can reduce socioeconomic peer pressure, create an increased sense of belonging within the school, and increase student performance by reducing distractions.
The most common argument against school uniforms is that they take away the students right to self-expression. Yes, school uniforms limit what the students have to wear, but students can still have their own ways of self-expression. Students can still express their style of choice with their hair and what accessories they wear. Their shoe choice is also a form of self-expression. Students can make the uniforms their own style without breaking the dress code. School is a place to learn. Outside of school, self- expression is limitless. Some parents also believe that it could interfere with students' natural behavior to experiment with different identities. Having uniforms in schools helps erase the defined line of the social classes. Typically, popular kids in the higher social classes wear the trendiest clothing...
Uniforms are worn for many different reasons such as being in jail or going to work, and you can see them today almost anywhere in the world. Now uniforms are becoming a popular trend amongst schools. The question is should students be forced to wear them? Some parents and teachers say that uniforms keep the students focused on academics and not fashion. Opposers believe that kids should have the freedom to choose what they wear to school. Although, uniforms do limit the student’s choice to wear whatever they please, which is the con to having the enforcement, uniforms are supposed to be looked upon as a positive thing. They eliminate bullying, help students focus only on academics, combine social classes and gives the school campus a professional
School uniforms have become more common nowadays than before. They used to be worn in private schools only it was very rare to go to a public school and see students wearing the same designated outfit. But not everyone is fond of wearing uniforms to school, many people see it as teachers and school administration taking away the rights of self-expression from students. But that shouldn’t really matter because kids and teenagers go to school to gain knowledge and be prepared for the real world not to show off their new pair of shoes to other kids.
Students are still bullied, even if they are wearing identical outfits. This is due to the fact that clothing is only one of the many factors that students are bullied over. Students can still be made fun of due to how they look in a school uniform or even the way they wear a uniform provided by the education
Conformity: The Issue behind School Uniforms,” Peter Caruso suggest clothing can provide clues to the status of a person which could also be connected to a person’s values. If all students were to dress the same, Caruso claims, ideas such as these would no longer be an issue (85). Caruso’s idea that once schools implement a uniformed dress code we would no longer have to worry about our students being judged because of their perceived status is unfair. Why is conformity the only answer to putting an end to
Bullies frequently choose to pick on an individual based on what they wear, and as many students already have a tough time at school, they don’t need bullies to make it even worse. Imagine what would happen if they were all dressed alike? In my opinion, the use of school uniform would provide a more bully-free environment causing them to have one less reason to get picked on.
With uniforms, it may restrict the desire for students to dress themselves to impress or stand out. Wearing something they are comfortable with and what they love may increase their confidence level and not curb their creativity. Sometimes when students had to obey the rules and regulations, they might feel locked up inside as they cannot really express themselves. This case can lead to several discipline cases as a student can act aggressively since they think the need to wear uniforms will cut off their
