Grades and Money
Student’s grades shouldn't be based upon how much money they receive. Students should want their education for themselves. Some schools pay students for having good grades and test scores. Some people agree with this saying it helps to motivate the students and others disagree saying it causes more problems. Students should not be paid for their grades because the students have more pressure put on them, which could lead to stress, the money can be used to help student achievement, and the students won't receive any more skill.
When students get paid for grades it puts more pressure on them. The students may feel pressured by parents or even students around them. "Many teachers also say paying students for
good grades leads to practical problems in their classrooms, including pressure to inflate grades and conflict with students and parents" (Flannery, page 1). The students may feel pressured to get better grades for more money. In conclusion, students shouldn't have to feel or be pressured to get better grades only for money. The money used to pay students can be used for better student achievement. The money can be used to help poor communities or other schools. In the article it says "The money might better be spent on the kinds of things we know can help student achievement, like teacher training and smaller class sizes." (Flannery, page 1). The money can be used for improvements around the school like upgrades, better tutoring, more teachers, and many other things. The money should be used for the students not given to them. Paying students for good grades doesn't really help to teach them anything. They don't learn anything, they may do the work, but only for the money. It gives them motivation to do the work, but not learn anything. What was said was that "Short-term performance may improve, but the long-term effect might be very damaging." (Flannery, page 2). They don't learn what they're supposed to, it won't stick in their minds. They should be rewarded with their future and see the effects without having to be paid now. Students shouldn't be paid for grades for many reasons. Students should be motivated by themselves. Students should not be paid for their grades because the students have more pressure put on them, which could lead to stress, the money can be used to help student achievement, and the students won't receive any more skill.
College athletes are undoubtedly some of the hardest working people in the world. Not only are they living the life of an average student, they also have a strenuous schedule with their specific sport. One of the most discussed topics in the world of college athletics is whether or not student-athletes should be paid money for playing sports. The people who disagree with the idea have some good arguments to make. Primarily that the athletes get to go to school for free for playing sports. Another argument is that if student-athletes were to get paid then it would ruin the amateurism of college sports. People who are against paying the athletes do not want to see the young people become focused on money. “Paying student-athletes would dramatically shift their focus away from where it should be - gaining knowledge and skills for life after college” (Lewis and Williams). This is very understandable because one of the biggest reasons college sports are so popular is because the athletes play for school pride and for bragging rights. They play because they enjoy the game, not because it is their job. Most people that disagree with the idea of paying the athletes fail to realize what really goes on behind the scenes. At most Universities around the country the bulk of the income the school receives is brought in through the athletic programs. In fact the football and basketball teams usually bring in enough money to completely pay for the rest of the athletic programs all together. To get a better understanding of how much has changed in the world of college sports a little history must be learned.
According to student reporter Joseph Maneen, “Studies have shown that rewards can motivate students to attend school and that the more kids are in school, the more they learn” (“Cash Courses” 1). Teachers cover topics more in-depth than a school textbook does, so for a student to understand what the teachers are teaching they must be present in the classroom. Some may say that being rewarded with money doesn’t help improve our success in subjects we don’t like, but student Katelyn Vlastaris says, “‘If you reward us with money, it may motivate us to do great in subjects we don’t like, and then we’ll start doing well by ourselves’” (“Cashing In”). Once a student gets involved in a subject they are unsure about, they start to learn about it and understand it better, and the students will continue to grow in that subject area.

State University has breached its academic standard by allocating unnecessary expenditures to athletically advanced students. Student athletes should not be paid at State University, because it focuses on an extracurricular activity as a means of profit, praises athletic ability over merit/ scholastics, promotes a bridge between players and regular students, and creates hierarchy between universities.
There has always been a lot of debate on whether or not college athletes should get paid. In my experiences as a student athlete, I can vouch for those in favor of paying student athletes. Because I need more money to help me through college, I had to apply for financial aid and eventually received a grant. There are many additional expenses I have encountered in just my first semester as a student athlete. An estimate of how much money I spend each semester is around 100 dollars. These expenses range from shampoo to eating out when the cafeteria is closed. The amount of time I spend as an athlete each week takes up at least 20 hours. The combination of time spent for basketball and personal needs demonstrates why student athletes should receive money. I’m amazed at how many things require money from my own pocket. The bottom line is student athletes need to start getting paid even if it’s minimal.
In the article “Pay to Play: should college athletes be paid?” the article states, “College athletes should not be forgot their main purpose at school is to learn and study, not receive money” (Birkenes and Akash). One can take from this that athletes should not be paid because they are normal students. College athletes are not making playing sports their only purpose for attending college; they are attending to pursue a more concrete degree that offers financial stability. Birkenes and Akash also write, “Paying college athletes would take money away from college budgets…” If athletes were to be payed then college would lose academic opportunities. The payment of athletes would cause academic cuts for things; such as math and science research. In trying to decide what research topic I wanted to use, I took many ideas into thought. I decided that the one idea that interests me most is whether student athletes should be paid or not.
