For many years, student athletes in college dedicate all their time and efforts into the sport they play. Athlete’s passion for the game has lead them to a University where they can showcase everything they’ve been working for. Athletes that are involved in a Division 1 level, are basically considered employees for the University, they have a full time job. The student athlete’s job is to bring in the profits to the University they are representing. In the past few years or so, a very touchy question has been lingering in many people’s minds: Should student athletes be paid? All of us students have had a time when we are over-filled with emotion after winning a competition or a big game. In these moments nothing matters but knowing hard work has paid off, and you made many people proud. “About two percent of high school athletes are awarded athletic scholarships to compete in college” (NCAA, 2011). Every student athlete devotes a significant amount of time to their sport, no matter what sport it is, some sports just get more attention then others. If student athletes were to be paid, some sports would have to be cut. There is no way a university can afford to pay each student athlete equally. If that were the case what would determine what sports were to be cut? How would it be fair for one student athlete to receive more of a pay then another? If extra money was involved in being a student athlete it would only create more problems for students and also more problems for the university as a whole. In some ways, receiving money as a college student can also get you into trouble with the law. In my opinion, receiving a scholarship and all the things that come along with it is enough and is only
