Should Schools Make Contact Sports Safer?

Recently, in 2013 9 football players playing football at the high school level have died due to indirect causes likes heatstroke and direct causes like concussions. Yet there have been no fatalities in the college, pro and youth levels. Although, contact sports are unsafe, children and teens should play contact sports throughout their childhood years.
Historically, all contact sports were dangerous due to injuries but recently school are trying to make contact sports safer. Some schools in the U.S. hire athletic trainers to train the students (Erik Brady). By hiring athletic trainers they can help decrease the number of injuries. Another way to make contact sports safer is to get rid of old equipment. Some schools keep old equipment that is not effective at protecting teen brains. Money is the main issue that schools have not bought new equipment and a athletic trainer. Buying an athletic trainer and new equipment is a start for schools making contact sports safer.

Contact sports are unsafe primarily football. Teen fatalities are on the rise but there are not any deaths at other football levels like college and youth. Deaths at the high school level are more prominent than deaths at younger or older levels of football. “Some of the brain-related deaths are due to helmets that aren’t certified or effective, and that’s much more likely to happen at the high school than college level”(Guskiewicz). “High school players are strong enough for high-velocity hits- unlike players in youth football-but their brains are not fully mature and are therefore more susceptible to second-impact syndrome, a potentially fatal circumstance in which a player is concussed once and then a second time before he is fully recovered from the first”(Erik Brady).
