Education is important because it can give knowledge of the world around us. Everyone from children to adults can benefit always wanting to expand their knowledge. It can help a person feel more confident and give them a sense of who they are. Since everyone is different schools need to remember that children learn at different rates, especially those with learning disabilities. “There needs to be more emphasis on children with learning disabilities and steps to improve learning difficulties” (Rosner 27). Receiving a bad grade can hurt a child's psychological and self-fulfillment needs. Self esteem is one of the influences which affects a child’s academic achievement. “Drawing from various perspectives, much research has validated the assumption that self-esteem is associated with educational achievement” (Marsh, et.al 19). Children with low self esteem can often have a hard time in school believing they are not living up to certain expectations. They have a fear that they are letting down parents, teachers, peers and themselves. Meanwhile a child with high self esteem sets higher goals for academic achievement and does well. “A positive self concept is desirable for a child's personal development” (Brendan 14). This can cause children to feel like they are grouped off into different achievement categories and want to withdraw from academic activities. There is nothing like a child who finds out that they are not doing well in school. They are expected to constantly sit for standardized tests but are underneath so much pressure they fail. “Many of the common criticisms of testing; through case studies acknowledges testing's limitations, outlines the consequences of losing the war on standardized testing” (Phelps 25). It is known the completion of school is required to pursue an higher education, and a minimum for jobs. It can be unfortunate for those children who have no guidance and drop out. Losing interest in school can lead children down the path in life forcing them into criminal activity, poverty and depending government assistance (Heckman 32).
