Have you ever wondered what it would be like if schools got rid of textbooks students would use laptops instead? I think that we should replace textbooks with laptops because using laptops instead of textbooks would be better for the environment. Additionally, laptops are more organized with more space for information. Furthermore laptops help motivation for students! textbooks could have hundreds of pages! that means that paper is wasted when we could just use laptops. Laptops have different files and folders! you could easily clean them out and organize yourself. Students rather go on computers to help motivate their learning and academics. Some people may feel that textbooks are better for students to have in school and at other activities. but you have to consider that by having a laptop you could have a lot more advantages then without a laptop. …show more content…
Imagine having ten of these textbooks. Do you know how many trees people would have to cut down for the paper in textbooks. People would not have to cut down trees when we use laptops! In the website “tablets vs textbooks” it said that “a school with 100 teachers uses on average 250,000 pieces of paper annually” This piece of evidence emphasizes that by using 250,000 pieces of paper that means you would have to cut down? Just one tree makes 16.67 reams of copy paper or 8,333.3 sheets from the website “conservation”. Furthermore in the article “tablets vs textbooks” it also states that “a school of 1,000 students on average spends between $3,000-4,000 a month on paper.” The above evidence proves that we are spending so much money for trees to be cut down! Likewise with digital textbooks they are compatible with tablets, smartphones, and laptops; it’s much easier to carry around and affordable price. However, some people may argue that digital textbooks can be a distraction for people because they would not bother read anymore. The author and poet Dana Gioia argues that electronics alternatives may be a bad influence that will lead society to not read anymore. Gioia complicates matters further when she writes, “While no single activity is responsible for the decline in reading, the cumulative presence and availability of electronic alternatives increasingly have drawn Americans away from reading” (161). I think Gioia is mistaken because she overlooks on electronics being a bad influence; but doesn’t see the benefits of electronics. To demonstrate, most of my textbooks are digital, which I can easily carry my tablet around where ever I go. Also, I save more money on digital textbooks and are simple to annotated the text. I’d rather have paper to write down and make my own citations and marks depending on the subject, but if I’m reading a novel, then using a tablet is great, and I’m able to carry as many books as I need. It’s amazing how technology has shaped our educational system over the years and especially in the last 10 years. Honestly, it was only a matter of time before we arrived at this crossroad. It still remains to be seen how this path will be navigated and implemented fully, but I’m excited to be on the journey.
In her article “In Defense of Laptops in the Classroom”, Rebecca Schuman, an education columnist for “Slate”, deals with the issue of having laptops in the classroom. Schuman believes that the rigid enforcement of the no-laptop rule infantilizes students and it is the students’ responsibility to be disciplined enough to not misuse the laptops in class, thus her views that laptops should be allowed in the classroom. Furthermore, they can be used to make learning more effective. While Schuman presents valid arguments for her stand, they are not persuasive for they lack concrete evidences and contain many assumptions.
All institutions whether attending a university, community, or even a technical college, requires the student to purchase a textbook in order to be successful in the class. Some textbooks aren’t even open all semester and the information and statistics can be out of date and can greatly affect your overall knowledge on certain topics. In addition, cost free text books can enhance the quality of education by the teachers and serve more accessibility to working students. Although councils and administrations can’t approve cost free text books, policies such as, Open Textbook, bookstore rentals, and affordable textbook act should be offered nationwide. As an experienced freshmen surviving the first year of college, textbooks should be purchased free of cost provided by institutions throughout the country.
Susan Payne, Kyle Greenberg, and Michael S. Walker address their view in which educators should think twice before allowing students to bring and open their laptops in the classrooms. Whereas, James B. Decker continues to further claim that instead of teachers and professors thinking that technology is a problem, then it should be used as a good advantage (316). Decker, Black, and Lassmann both offer a similar solution that the higher education experience will benefit from technology in the classrooms. On the other hand, Payne, Greenberg, and Walker do not provide a solution to eliminate distractions and fail to mention evidence on the positive factors of laptops in the classroom. Decker calls for a solution by telling teachers that they should use this resource instead of telling students to put their devices away.
Laptops in the Classroom Many educators oppose the use of laptops in the classroom, citing distraction and diminished performance as reasons. However, there are receptive others, including education columnist Rebecca Schuman. Her article “In Defense of Laptops in the Classroom” was published in June 15, 2014 on Slate, an online current affairs and culture magazine. Schuman aims to persuade educators to allow laptops on grounds that students can make decisions and that laptops could be utilized productively.
Also, there is the issue If students do not have a computer, Wi-Fi, and even a printer at home, then they can be unprepared for class, the future, and maybe even for the workforce. Kelly Gallagher, a history teacher, went paperless at a public school. She discovered that she had a really positive experience based off her students reactions and her main result was that her classroom was more organized than before. She had found that she had the ability to pull out files and find things easier once they were organized on the computer. The students also realized their phones were powerful devices they could use for their own education besides leisure (Gallagher).
Along with these problems, some professors demand a specific edition of textbooks, which would cost hundreds of dollars more than the older version, and the only difference students can find is the physical appearance of the books. The California Student Public Interest Research Group published a study in 2004 that found new editions cost 58 percent more than older editions and newer editions are not that different from previous editions (PresslerE01). Therefore, expenses on text books must be reduced as it has a direct effect on students’ performance. In addition, it can be accessible anywhere at any time, so, students shouldn’t carry heavy textbooks all the time.
The development of technology in this country has been significant to the daily lives of Americans today. In the twenty-first century, one of the greatest accomplishments of technology is the use of laptops. People, such as students, are facing the fact that laptops have made their lives easier. Some colleges and universities have allowed that each student bring their personal laptops with internet connectivity to class while others believe they easily weaken the learning abilities of students instead of promoting and increasing learning in the classroom. Although personal laptops in the classroom have numerous advantages, there have also been frequent complaints from professors because laptops hinder with learning, and as a result should be banned from bringing them into the classroom since laptops can easily distract students, not every student can afford purchasing a laptop, and would prevent students from cheating or plagiarizing.
With technology progressing from drones fulfilling shipments to electronic books becoming cheaper, major companies such as Apple and Amazon have had a big impact on not only the tech industry but the publishing industry as well. Companies are outputting resources like IBook’s and the Kindle bookstore to take full advantage of the transition to digital publishing. As a result of this we have greener, more budget friendly books, and outdated traditional copies of text. With the introduction to these resources it is making the lives of students and the mass market more convenient. Students are now able to purchase books on one device that won’t weigh their bags down on a daily basis. Companies have created bookstores that can be accessed from devices that we use every day, resulting in paperless copies of books that are substantially cheaper than the traditional hard copy. E-books are replacing physical books and textbooks rapidly, and as a result they are becoming more widely and readily available for students.

Just kidding, but there are over 1.5 million iPads that are being used in classrooms by students on a daily bases rather than using printed textbooks as main learning resources (Graduating With Technology). With recent advancements in technology, many school districts have turned the focus off traditional learning methods of using textbooks, and are now focusing on integrating the use of tablets and computers as the main means of learning for students. Technology is going to continue to advance throughout this digital age and is going to gain popularity within education, but there are questions arising of how effective technology is when used in the classroom. The opportunity of using new technology to enhance learning should be seized, but textbooks should not become extinct within the education system or become a secondary learning method due to tablets and other types of technology becoming more popular in the education system. Textbooks are reliable, they can be used by anyone, and there are enough textbooks for each student to have their own, and be able to take them home. Also, technology is impacting the way the brain receives information. Reading digital print isn't as productive for readers as printed text, and there is limited access to resources needed for tablets to be effective when used by students. While this is true there are benefits to using tablets and other forms of technology in the classroom. It is easier for teachers to have assignments emailed directly to them, or post assignments on the internet, the use of technology is required in many core classes, and textbooks are easily worn, and expensive.
Tablet supporters would often argue that replacing textbooks with tablets can create a healthier environment. Schools can save a lot of trees since paper handouts would no longer be necessary; teachers can send documents directly onto students’ devices. However, less paper does not necessarily guarantee a less damage on the environment. The manufacturing process plays a more crucial role. Statistics show that “manufacturing one tablet requires the extraction of 33 pounds of mineral, 79 gallons of water, and 100 kilowatt hours of fossil fuels resulting in 66 pounds of carbon dioxide” and running the electronics would require even more energy (“Tablets”). On the other side, the process of manufacturing books has been improved over the century that requires less energy. Paper wastes are also easier to recycle than electronic wastes. As a society, schools are requiring students to take computer literacy programs from young ages. This is where it all starts. We are programmed from a young age to use technology and we are taught that technology is our friend. When in reality it just inhibits our learning. So maybe the better question to ask would be, is there anything professors or society could do that would help use laptops for good?
