In order for everyone in a society to have equal opportunities to health, policies should be in place to improve the education, housing and transportation. There should be policies that would provide houses in good conditions, as well as, safe environment to low income families. Affordable transportation should be in place especially for people who cannot afford a car, or do not drive due to health reasons. Most importantly, the minimum wage should be increased because the cost of living increases everyday, but our pay has remained stagnant. Healthy living should be included in the school curriculum and more people should be encouraged to attain degrees other than high school diploma. This can be done by lowering the loan interest rate and
...county, which indicates that there is room for improvement in our health care system. Research studies have shown inside our community that these outside factors in our population increase our risk for developing chronic diseases. Minority groups, those with little to no health insurance, smokers, the overweight and obese population, people who live below the poverty line or have little socio-economic status, and those with low access to medical care. By being able to guarantee health care with the Affordable Care Act and to increase funding for social services such as Cal Fresh, Medicare, Medical and many other programs that our government has developed, we will then be able to help people who fall into those specific categories, as well as those who are genetically inclined to developing chronic diseases, and to ultimately be in control of our own health outcomes.
The public needs to address racial disparities in health which is achievable by changing policy addressing the major components of socioeconomic status (income, education, and occupation) as well as the pathways by which these affect health. To modify these risk factors, one needs to look even further to consider the factors. Socioeconomic status is a key underlying factor. Several components need to be identified to offer more options for those working on policy making. Because the issue is so big, I believe that not a single policy can eliminate health disparities in the United States. One possible pathway can be education, like the campaign to decrease tobacco usage, which is still a big problem, but the health issue has decreased in severity. The other pathway can be by addressing the income, by giving low-income individuals the same quality of care as an individual who has a high
"Plain and simple, Congress must act to meet the needs of our constituents. We can do that by strengthening families and increasing the minimum wage."
It is essential for the United States government to provide its entire citizen with a free health care. This system ensures that everyone has an access to medical services regardless to his or her social status. It is an important way of preserving life as free health care plan ensures free treatment to the entire citizen. In addition, it can play a big role of ensuring that there is an improved access to health services. Ensuring that all American citizens have an access to the right health care will in turn decrease health care costs. It can also help to stop medical bankruptcies in the entire nation. Lastly, it is one way of reducing poverty as it will lower the debt of the US which would then increase employment.
Healthy People 2020 is a program for the promotion of health and the prevention of diseases, launched by the Department of Health and Human Services in December 2010. According to healthypeople.gov, this program has four overarching goals which are first to achieve healthy, longer lives free of preventable diseases, injuries, and premature deaths; to achieve health fairness, eliminate differences, and improve all groups’ health; also to produce social and physical environments that encourage good health; and last but not least to promote life’s quality, healthy development, and healthy behaviors through all life stages. This program has a vision of a community where people live long, healthy lives. Healthy People 2020 offers a comprehensive set of 10 years of nationwide goals and objectives that is meant to improve the health of the American population. Healthy People 2020 covers 42 topic areas with approximately 600 objectives, which include 1,200 measures. A smaller set of Healthy People 2020 objectives, has been designated to communicate high-priority health issues and actions that can be taken to address them, this objectives are called Leading Health Indicators. The program goes above and beyond these health indicators in order to provide the best care for the people of this country. These indictors cover from the access of health service, nutrition, physical activity, and obesity to substance abuse, environmental quality, injury and violence.
More than one-third of Americans who are between the ages of nineteen and twenty-four are uninsured. This is because most insurance is provided through a person’s job, and entry-level jobs which isn 't available for all young students. In addition, healthcare costs are currently rising faster than inflation, which means that salary increases cannot compensate for the higher prices of health care. Government regulation and a universal system could help keep costs affordable. A universal system would guarantee that everyone could receive health care regardless of preexisting conditions. Consequently, more people would be able to seek preventative services, like checkups, to maintain good health and detect problems early. Too frequently, people avoid taking preventative health measures until something is too late because of how expensive it is. While there 's a debate over how the U.S. should pay for a universal healthcare system, a good idea is to study the ways several other countries have successfully implemented such a system. Europe has a system in which all residents pay into a common fund that creates a pool of money and provides benefits to all. We must figure out a way to effectively adopt a universal healthcare system that provides care to all
Some think that the minimum wage should not be raised, but others think that the minimum wage should be raised. If one had to be chosen, raising the minimum wage would be better. The minimum wage should be raised because if you were to work full time on minimum wage, you are below the poverty line; Also states that did raise the minimum wage above the federal standard have had more job growth than states that did not. Finally, "Minimum wage workers are much more likely to immediately go out and spend that extra money in the economy," says Heidi Shierholz of the Economic Policy Institute, which favors raising the minimum. "That's because they're often living paycheck to paycheck."
Opportunities for good health bypass many of us daily. If we all were rich we all would have good healthcare because we could afford it. Being healthy and living a healthy lifestyle can be costly. For most people good health may be unobtainable due to ones economic circumstances. In most situations being healthy has nothing to do with color or zip code. However it has everything to do with money or the lack thereof.
An ongoing hot topic that has been on many people’s minds nowadays would definitely include the proposal for increasing minimum wage in America. However, one group is going unnoticed and unrepresented in the debates. Since the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) was put into effect in 1938, it has become acceptable to require certain workers to work for tips. Waiters and waitresses make up the majority of this class of employees. The law states that “an employer of a tipped employee is only required to pay 2.13 an hour in direct wages of that plus the tips received equals at least the federal minimum wage, the employee retains all tips and the employee customarily and regularly receives more than $30 a month in tips” (“Fair Labor Standards Act Advisor”). Of course, this does not always work in the favor of the employee. However, there is substantial evidence that is in favor of giving tipped workers an actual, livable wage. In order to ensure that all workers in America are treated equally, waiters and waitresses in the United States should be paid the base minimum wage of seven dollars and twenty-five cents ($7.25) per hour.
Since its inception, the minimum wage has been a hotbed for debate. If today’s leaders could manage to increase minimum wage, millions of families would benefit.
My mom worked for a hospital and therefore we had decent health insurance, but learning how many people are with out health insurance and adequate access to good hospitals and treatment shocked me. A shortage in doctors and nurses, also do not help, that means longer waits to be able to see a doctor which can affect you health if it’s a serious problem. I learned that is has no easy solution to solving this problem, there are so many factors that play into this problem, but if we find the problems and try and fix them in the future we could have better access to doctors and
"Raising the minimum wage will benefit about 28 million workers across the country. And it will help businesses, too - raising the wage will put more money in people's pockets, which they will pump back into the economy by spending it on goods and services in their communities." -- President Obama
As has been noted, Each determinant is linked together to provide an over view of a populations health status, Being able to understand how each one affects health statuses can significantly reduce inequalities. The government and other health professionals continue to come together to create health policies and strategies in order to benefit all New Zealanders. These are being implemented through each District Health Board in New Zealand, Health officials also acknowledge that maintaining the health of the population would be more cost effective, introducing new health initiatives and having them actively promoted through the health promotion agency, (2012) as well as having access points such as community houses available for health educators to actively educate communities for free. Encouragement of healthier lifestyles and tips of how this can be achieved, especially for low income families. At the same time, Improving housing conditions and making them more accessible and affordable, Most importantly increasing income by closing the wage gap. As we have learnt, Income has the biggest influence on a families health status, as discussed, the higher your income the more options are available to you as opposed to a family on a low income and being limited to options. All the
“Of course, nothing helps families make ends meet like higher wages. … And to everyone in this Congress who still refuses to raise the minimum wage, I say this: If you truly believe you could work full-time and support a family on less than $15,000 a year, go try it. If not, vote to give millions of the hardest-working people in America a raise.”
Health care programs are a universal topic for discussion in the United States and other countries of the world. Every country implements their own health care system that they see fit. The United States is the leading economic power of the world, but when it comes to health care we are ranked 37th. In the United States health care is more expensive than in any other country in the world and roughly 47 million people are left without coverage. While no country has been able to work out a perfect system, there are several countries that will be discussed that the United States could look to for tips to improve the current health care policies.
