Fraternities are in the headlines far more than they need to be—and not for their charitable community service. In college, students are encouraged to join extracurricular activities, so many join Greek life; however, the question is, do the cons of Greek life far outweigh the pros? Although there are many benefits of Greek Life, such as, charitable community service, the building of lifelong friendships, and safe havens from academic stress—there are many reasons they should be more strictly regulated. Fraternities encourage binge drinking, extreme hazing, sexual assaults, and blatant racism. They take away from the very idea of college—learning. That’s why they should be more strictly regulated. Many people argue that Greek life should be banned altogether. Although, that would lead to these organizations being pushed underground—leading to bigger problems than before. Fraternities promote unsafe behavior in nature. These issues are not isolated cases of bad behavior, but rather a system-wide problem. There have been numerous deaths from alcohol poisoning. Greek organizations foster a culture of drinking on campus. Fraternity members not only drink in higher quantities, but they also drink more frequently. “A Harvard study concluded 4 out of 5 fraternity and sorority members are binge drinkers. In comparison, other research suggests 2 out of 5 college students overall are regular binge drinkers.” (Drinking and Drug Abuse…). Drinking is actually what leads to majority of other problems in Greek organizations. “Binge drinking contributes to some of the highest rates of accidents, sexual assaults, emergency room visits, and deaths” (Drinking and Drug Abuse…).
