Should Dress Codes Be Allowed On School Campus?

Many school administrators believe free dress in schools is inappropriate and a distraction to other students. Therefore, they make stricter dress codes limiting specific colors and styles. However, they do not know that this makes searching for clothing that is appropriate very difficult. With this being said, many students in our school including myself would strongly request a change. On behalf of the students of Thomas Russell Middle School, we would strongly request a change in the school’s dress code allowing students to wear various colors and styles.

We are aware of the concerns parents and schools administrators might have. One concern school administrators have are the usage of some colors, as they can appear to be gang colors. The most common concern, however, is the worry of students using this privilege inappropriately by showing too much skin. We also understand the safety hazards certain clothing might have as it can get in the way of a student's learning environment. Another concern you may have is the appeal of clothing as it can be distracting to others.

Milpitas High School does not have a dress code and neither does college or universities. Therefore, making us wear specific types of clothing does not help us in any way. This creates more of a struggle for the students and parents that have to find specific clothing that goes with the dress code. Especially, when the uniform policy is color coded. For example, in our school, Thomas Russell we are not allowed to wear blue jeans or excessive amount of red or blue. When jeans are the most common type of clothing, and black and blue are the basic jacket and shirt colors, it is hard to find something that is within the same price range and budget most families can
