Should athletes in college be paid for playing sports or are the scholarships that they get enough? College players at D1 schools get $200,000 to $300,000 worth of scholarships for schooling and everything else they need a full ride is a full ride everything is paid for. Why would they need extra money if they are already getting 200,000 to 300,000 dollars? They should not be is the answer. These athletes are bringing in ESPN, NCAA and everyone else that makes money off of them millions to even billions of dollars. Which this is a lot of money but these athletes do not see any of this money. The money that they get from their scholarship should be more than enough they are already getting a $300,000 scholarship why should they get more money. However, others think they should be getting paid more money from the money that they are making for the NCAA, ESPN and other networks.

Many

people oppose the argument that college athletes should be paid to play. Most people say that because most big division one athletes will get out of college and join a professional team they will be getting out off college with no debt. In this case all that money they will be making in the pros will be all pocketed. Saint Leo University did a poll on this subject it was published in a article called College athletes should not be paid. They said “When asked to think about college athletics and money generated from major men’s sports programs, 66% said the scholarship is enough for the athletes” (1). The people that they asked the outcome was a three two one margin, most opposed paying college athletes. In another way “it is inevitable that some Division one student- athletes will soon receive additional compensation above their current grant- in- aid awards” said Phil Hatlem. This is why people that are playing college sports should not be paid because after college they can make millions and millions of dollars on top of all the scholarship money that they got in college.
In the same way on why college athletes should not be paid. In a article called why college athletes should not be paid, by UWIRE they say “to be honest, athletes actually are paid. They are not able to spend the money the way they want to spend it” (1). Many people all over the United States appose that college athletes should be paid because of the money they are already getting. They may not be able to spend this money but 4 years down the road when they do not have to pay back student loans that is when they will see that the scholarship came in handy. They also said “No matter what you decide to do in life, there is a period when you will not be properly rewarded for the service you provide” (1). This is saying that even if college students are going into medical to become a doctor they have to go throw 7 years of college. If they did not get any grants their paying that all by their selves. It does not matter if that student is a football player or going to school to become a doctor they may not get what they want till that student goes on and starts making money after college.
Further more on why college athletes should not be paid to play. In an article called Why N.C.A.A Athletes shouldn’t get paid, by Ekow N. Yankah he says “Paying student athletes erodes that association. If a high school football prodigy reported that he chose Michigan not because of there quality, tradition or beautiful campus but because of the payout then the university values would be lost” (Yankah 2). This is saying that when colleges start paying player that is when it is no longer about the schooling but more for the money they could make by playing football at that university. He goes on to say “None of this would be easy to accomplish, of course, given the money at stake, there would be casualties” (Yankah 3). He is saying here that If they start to pay players then it will just get to out of hand and kids will just go somewhere for the money and not the school. At the same time, how would it be decided on which athlete gets more money and who gets less money or no money.
In the opposite way on if college athletes should be paid. In the article Two recent ruling may change the face of college sports, by Vironica Majerol. She says “Big time college football and basketball programs generates billions of dollars a year in TV and marketing contracts, ticket sales, and merchandising” (Majerol1). This is saying that the colleges make so much money off of these kids and its not fair that they are not seeing any of this money all they are getting is a scholarship. She also goes on to say “in August, a federal judge decided that players in top college football and basketball are entitled to receive payments in there “names, images, and likenesses” are used in video games or on TV” (Majerol1). This is saying that player are now getting paid for be on TV commercials or advertisements or in video games like the game NCAA Football, and NCAA Basketball . So it is not a if college players will get paid but it is a when will they start getting paid.
In addition to the opposing side on if college athletes should be paid to play.

In an article named Should college athletes be paid to play? By Kenneth J. Copper. He says “New dimension to long debate over paying athletes by arguing they are “employed” under federal labor laws and entitled to form unions and negotiate wages, hours and working conditions” (Copper 1). Now there are people fighting to say that college athletes under the law from the federal government shows that these athletes are labeled as being employed. This should mean that they should get paid like a regular employed person and be able to spend that money how they want. He also goes on to say “Dolald Remy, the NCAA general counsel and vice president for legal affairs, says that court precedents and tax laws have upheld the status of college athletes as students” (Copper, 1). Now they are saying that this money that they would be getting will make it so these college athletes would no longer just be students but they also would be employed under the University as like a professor or a

coach.
In all, the argument that college athletes should or should not be paid all comes down to one thing. That one thing is that they are getting paid, they are just receiving the money in a way that they can not spend the money how they wish to. It will show in the future when they do not have to pay back that school the $300,000 dollars most kids will have to pay back. This should be enough for college athletes they are getting their college paid for in full. They are going to college for free when many students are not going to college for free and they have to get a job to pay for college their self’s. When people say that College athletes are considered employed under the law that may be true but what also is true is they are getting paid just in a different way. People that are just going to college and not an athlete have to pay for college by them self’s or hope that their mom and dad have a lot of money. Because college is not cheap and the scholarships they are getting is a hug amount of money they just do not see the benefits of it yet.
