As this has been an ongoing question at some point in just about every 18 years olds head if they should or should not have the right to consume alcoholic beverages. And the cliché answer usually is “ they should be able to drink at 18 because if the have the right to fight for their country they should have the right to drink alcohol”. Many
If teenagers that are now turning 18 can vote, then they should be able to drink at the age of 18. If teens are 18 and old enough to vote, they should be able to drink. Saying they can vote, is calling them responsible and mature enough to pretty much vote. At age 18, teens are now called adults and vote. It’s the legal adulthood (“Drinking”). Voting requires a lot of adult decision making. It is a hard choice to put your vote that could help or make worst of America. If they can defend our country, they should at least enjoy a drink when they have time. 18 is old enough for the military and they risk their life. They’re defending our country, so they should have the right to have a drink when they get back from duty. It’ll cut down on young adults drinking, there wouldn’t be much of a rush to underage drink. If they’re being trusted to drive, such as speeding, on the phone, reading, putting makeup on, etc. What’s the harm done in just drinking, if all that happens when people drive. 19 out of the 50 states in the US has not specified that the drinking age is 21. Technically there isn’t an age limit on drinking. (“USA”). If you can buy tobacco at 18, they should be able to buy alcohol at that age. If people can buy tobacco at 18, they should be able to bu...
In the article, “It’s Time to Let, Teenagers Drink Again,” Camille Paglia states that teenager should be allowed to drink at 18 years old like they have a right to vote, marry
There has always been controversy as to whether the drinking age should be lower from 21 to a younger age, like 18. Though there are drawbacks to lowering the drinking age such as, one It may cost for use of illicit drugs. two Its easier to access other drugs, and alcohol. tree it may decrease unsafe drinking activity’s. The benefits would be that it would one get rid of feelings increasing , two people should have freedom of choice and tree, it is wrong to drink at such a young age.
America’s government believes that 18 year old young adults are mature enough to enter the army or navy, but are not mature enough to handle an alcoholic beverage. As Lyzi White stated, “You believe that 18 year olds have brains that are mature enough to go to war, to enter marriage, to fulfill legal obligations like voting and jury duty, but not mature enough to drink?”. I completely agree with the point White stated. You’re telling me they are mature enough to kill people and stay away from family for months or even years at a time, but are not mature enough to consume alcohol? If an 18 year old can put their life at risk for their country, what makes you think they’re not mature enough to drink in their own country. I do understand that there is still a lot of mental growth that a person may experience between the ages of eighteen and twenty-one, but my argument would be that since they are putting up a fight and protecting our country, they should be able to consume alcohol.
There has been an ongoing controversy in the United States on whether the drinking age should be lowered to eighteen like most of the world or if it should stay at twenty-one. Underage drinking has been a major controversial issue for years, yet why is it not under control? Teenagers are continuing to buy alcohol with fake identification cards, drink, get into bars, and drink illegally. As a teen I have proof that these things are going on not only in college but in high school as well. There are a lot of factors that come together to why the drinking age should be lowered to eighteen; the most obvious reason is too many people are drinking before they are twenty-one. Liquor stores, bars, and clubs all want to make money and if they can get away with selling to underage teens then they will. A study done by the Academic Search Premier agrees that, ?By now it is obvious that the law has not succeeded in preventing the under-21 group from drinking? (Michael Smith 1).
Should America Lower the Legal Drinking Age to 18? When it comes to the discussion over lowering the legal drinking age to eighteen, people express various different ideas and beliefs concerning the issue. Some believe that the drinking age for alcohol should be lowered and others believe that it should stay the same. Those that do believe lowering the drinking age is the best route to take, do have valid points. However, there are others who argue that changing the law will not change things for the better.
On the other hand, adults aged 18 have their own rights to make a decision to whether consume alcohol or not. For example, once children turn 18 years old, they are mature enough to make their own decisions. Cloud states, “After all, in almost every other legal and cultural respect, you’re an adult at 18. You can vote, adopt children, sign up for Iraq or become a commercial pilot at 18. Treating alcohol differently helps turns it into a holy grail of adulthood.” (Cloud). Although, in the United States, 18 years o...
There are numerous problems involving alcohol in the world today, including alcoholism, drunk driving, and alcohol poisoning leading to death. Many of these problems involve minors and are linked to drinking underage. The legal drinking age in many states is twenty-one years old. The purpose of this law is to keep minors out of danger: away from drunk driving, alcohol poisoning, and injuring the brain before it is fully developed. The government supports the belief that people are not ready or responsible enough for alcohol until this age. However, various professors and researchers are discovering ways to disprove this belief. These people think that reducing the drinking age to eighteen would influence our country in a positive way. Not only do minors support this idea, but there are numerous people and organizations that support the idea of lowering the drinking age as well. The current drinking law is counterproductive in our society because it’s not effective in eliminating underage drinking, and leads to unsafe situations such as drunk driving and alcohol poison instigated deaths. This problem could be solved by lowering the minimum drinking age to eighteen, with a drinking license.
Should the United States follow other countries in their quest to end the debate on the drinking age? The United States can take a look at other States such as: Germany, the Netherlands and France, and see how successful they are. Many teenagers would jump on the bandwagon of lowering the drinking age just because they want to have the ability to drink, the argument of being able to die for the United States but can’t drink and it would take away the “Forbidden Fruit” of drinking. Much of the older generations would jump on the bandwagon of keeping the drinking age the same because they had to wait to drink, because drinking has adverse effects on the brain and drinking could lead to binge drinking.
The legal age limit to drink in the U.S. is 21 years old currently. Even though the legal age limit is 21 to drink, there are many people who are abusing this law and drinking illegally. I believe that the legal age limit should be lowered to 18. In order for this to happen other U.S. citizens will have to vote to lower the age limit. I am interested in this because if it was lowered it would make it legal for my age group. Although there will possibly be more alcohol related incidents resulting in injury and possibly death. Lowering the legal age limit will allow people who do it illegally now to be able to do it in a safer environment. This will result in less alcohol related incidents. The age limit to drink alcohol should be lowered because the benefits overtime will out way the harm it will cause.
Teen drinking is a huge problem today in America. Statistics show that teens are starting to drink younger and younger and that is a huge problem that if not corrected will be catastrophic. How long will we allow underage drinking to plague our society? How long until enough is enough and someone stands up? If something is not done soon it might be too late! It seems like every time one turns on the news there is a story about a teen being killed or injured due to alcohol. Teen drinking has gotten worse and worse over the years making one think why isn't the government doing anything real to stop this epidemic. The laws that are already in place are obviously not working so the government is just not doing their job. Parents are also to blame letting their kids drink and sometimes even buying it for their teens. The drinking age is twenty-one but all these teens are still getting alcohol. At this time I believe the drinking age should stay at twenty-one until there are stricter punishment for alcohol abuse.
The first reason why eighteen should be the legal age to drink is because one can vote and serve in the military at the same age. Dr. Ruth Engs stated in an interview, the banning of alcohol by young adults (who can vote, serve in the military, etc.) is not working, we need to get rid of this failure and replace it with proven, realistic, and successful approach to fix the situation (Hanson, 1997-2013). The legal age to vote is eighteen in America, the age where young adults make the decision on the country’s future leader, possibly take a bullet for it, but can’t allow them to buy alcohol. If young adults have to trained and kill for the country, as tiring as that is, they should have all the rights to obtain alcohol, because they deserve it. It does not make sense at all to some people. If at the age eighteen, one is legally an adult, can vote and serve in the military, then drinking alcohol should also be the same (Harold, n.d.).
Unsupervised, underage drinking has become an epidemic throughout the world, but in the in America more than anywhere else. Even the president’s 19 year old daughter has been arrested for underage drinking. America has the highest legalized drinking age in the world. In fact, only four countries in the world have a legalized drinking age over 18. When we turn 18 in America we are supposed to be adults, but then what is the 21 age mark it is like we get an adult trial version for three years without some freedoms but with all the consequences. For example a twenty-year old, wounded soldier from Iraq can vote, get married, and be tried as an adult, but he can’t even buy a drink! Apparently, we value the condition of his social life more than life itself. Hundreds if not thousands of soldiers have experienced the same scenario. This is nothing new, there is a long history of alcohol ageism.
Nowadays, as the fast development of the modern society, the demand of relaxing and enjoying life tend to increase dramatically. Obviously, drinking is considered as one of the most popular hobbies that most of people in different ages like to do beside eating and entertaining. Unfortunately, while having experience with delicious foods and wonderful entertainment is mostly appropriate, drinking is no longer viewed as an acceptable activity when there are groups of people who are inappropriately taking drinks without thinking about risking their life and breaking rules. There are three reasons why the suitable drinking age should stay at 21 or above instead of reducing it to 18.
Should the legal alcohol drinking age be lowered to eighteen? At the age of eighteen years old, you are eligible to vote, you can legally purchase cigarettes, you are eligible for the military draft, you are willing to die for this country, you are even able to serve on a jury, and you are titled as an adult at the age of eighteen. Why can’t someone at the age of eighteen not drink alcohol? Who is to say that just because someone is twenty-one years of age means that they are wise enough to drink alcohol in an accountable conduct? There are several explanations why one ought to be able to drink alcohol at the age of eighteen.
