Have you ever come across a situation like this? Your little sister was so attracted to an advertisement of a Barbie doll in the television and she was so influenced by it that she keeps bugging your mother to buy one for her. After a long period begging, eventually your mother had to buy it for her. From this simple yet meaningful example, you can see the huge effect of media in our daily life as humankinds with needs and wants. Media affects us in all kind of aspects, from the biggest decision in our live for instance buying your home until the smallest thing that we need to do on a basis such as deciding to buy our garments or changing your hair products. Media is a word originated from the word medium and the meaning of media from Wikipedia is the storage and transmission channels or tools used to store and deliver information and data. In delivering information and data, media has it owns benefits and drawbacks. The advantages of media can be seen from its efficiency to spread news of all kind to gargantuan and various target audiences but on the other hand there are also some shortcomings of it. Media is indeed a very powerful path which can be conveying misleading messages and may divert young minds into the wrong direction and one of the most influential media affects is on body image. As you can observe from so many advertisements, weight loss programs and beauty pageants, all of them are promoting the perception of how important is your body image or in other words, it is important to have a thin body just to please and fit in the society. Eventually, most of the viewers will be affected by this perception and they are going to be fully influenced by it. The worst case to happen is they are leading society to suffer eat... ... middle of paper ... ...easily influenced by the TV shows and advertisements. This shows a really huge diversity of people were affected by anorexia and we know that the reasons behind are the spread by the media. In conclusion, we can say that media does really influence in increasing trend of anorexic behaviour. Anorexia nervosa itself have dangerous for people in all kind of aspects and most of the people affected by the disease are influence by the media especially after watching programs that brings out the discomfort about themselves such as weight loss programs, beauty pageants and advertisements. Most of the affected persons by anorexia are women but men are not excluded and diverse group of people of all kind of backgrounds have high risk in possessing the characteristic of an anorexics. Therefore, we can fully conclude that media does have a major effect in anorexic behaviour.
Anorexia Nervosa has been a problematic disease many women suffer from. The article “The Slender Trap” was composed by Trina Rys who is a stay at home mother with a husband and one daughter. Rys writes the main reasons a woman may develop anorexia from. She states that the psychological pressures, expectations of friends and family and influences of the media all are factors when a woman is inflicted with the disease. I strongly agree with Rys persuading argument that anorexia could be caused by an unknown identity and the overall main focus of the ideal image of a woman. Although, I believe Rys requires a stronger argument on whether food restrictions executed by parents are a major step to developing the harmful illness. She seems to put emphasize on mainly women but does not shine any light on men.
At first, I agree with Goodman’s argument and I think that due to the impact of media, people's aesthetic standard began to change and more and more people begin to pay more attention to lose weight nowadays. And in my opinion, the most obvious part that women are affected by the impact of media, especially for the actors. For example, as Goodman points out, 15% of high school girls who vomited for weight control increased 5 times. It shows girls were worrying about their weight, and it lead to make them to suffer eating disorders. From my personal experience, I also would like to use media to find what is the most fashion hairstyle or cloth brand every month. And it will make me to decide what stuff I want to buy. Also, I think I am a member of control weight, because every day I would like to keep a good image to others. So as a result of control weight, I have the same problem of eating disorders as well. Besides, the...
Media is a wide term that covers many information sources including, television, movies, advertisement, books, magazines, and the internet. It is from this wide variety of information that women receive cues about how they should look. The accepted body shape and has been an issue affecting the population probably since the invention of mirrors but the invention of mass media spread it even further. Advertisements have been a particularly potent media influence on women’s body image, which is the subjective idea of one's own physical appearance established by observation and by noting the reactions of others. In the case of media, it acts as a super peer that reflects the ideals of a whole society. Think of all the corsets, girdles, cosmetics, hair straighteners, hair curlers, weight gain pills, and diet pills that have been marketed over the years. The attack on the female form is a marketing technique for certain industries. According to Sharlene Nag...
...ficant enough to prove that media does not play a role in influencing eating disorders. Since the link between media and eating disorders like anorexia nervosa and bulimia has been established, the next step for society is to understand how to prevent such harmful influences from the media.
The media has had countless dilemmas with representing race and culture accurately and mostly by people of color. Such as the Blaxploitation movies and black TV and the attraction that they have to other races, mainly whites that also go to enjoy these cinemas and cultures. Whites always seem to be willing to accept the black lives on screen but never appear to in real life. But black people themselves have had some reservations about the very show and movies that put them in a place to be seen and respected. Both of these expressions have their pros and cons, but it all depends on how someone sees them and whether you can accept the truth about them. Blacks can see both as progressive for the African American community
...d with anorexia has increased a lot during the last 30 years which is very heavily influenced with the body image that is presented by the media. Bulimia nervosa was first used in 1979 by Russell to describe one of his patients. Later in 1988 Cooper and Fairburn described bulimia as “a profound and distressing loss of control over eating,” and “irresistible cravings for food”. Today these eating disorders are classified by the DSM V, which I mentioned earlier.
Researchers have used various abstract foundations for examining the relationship between media and body image ( Holmstrom, 2004). Here I review the theory that has been used by researcher in the area. Bandura’s Social cognitive theory (1994) assumed that “people learn and model the behaviors of attractive others”. The supporters of this theory suggest that young women find slim models in the media attractive and try to imitate them through dieting which leads them to eating disorders.
intro- Ninety percent of teenage girls have been on a diet. Some take it too far and starve themselves to be thin. Over one million people in just the US are afflicted with anorexia. If what is on the inside matters, then why are does society and the media constantly promote being thin? The influence of society’s promotion of a thin body plays a significant role in the development of such eating disorders as anorexia.
One of the main external factors in the development of an eating disorder is the media. The media objectifies both men and women throug...
“The attention-grabbing pictures of various high-flying supermodels and actors on different magazine covers and advertisements go a long way in influencing our choices” (Bagley). The media is highly affective to everyone, although they promote an improper image of living. Research proved says those with low self-esteem are most influenced by media. Media is not the only culprit behind eating disorders. However, that does not mean that they have no part in eating disorders. Media is omnipresent and challenging it can halt the constant pressure on people to be perfect (Bagley). Socio-cultural influences, like the false images of thin women have been researched to distort eating and cause un-satisfaction of an individual’s body. However, it is clear that, although virtually all women are exposed to these socio-cultural influences, only a very small proportion develop clinical eating disorders (Mazzeo and Bulik). Every article believes that socio-culture have an impact on eating disorders. Although, researchers believe that is not the only reason, and the easiest statement to make. Eating disorders are far more complicated than it just being blamed on the media. Bagley, Mazzeo and Bulik all state that media play a role in the development but are not the main reason to developing an eating disorder. In all of the research done thus far media is a part of eating disorders, but not the only culprit.
The World Book Encyclopedia defines anorexia as, "one who avoids food for psychological reasons". Most "experts" believe that those who suffer from anorexia are starving themselves to avoid growing into adults. It is also common knowledge among these experts that anorexics "want to gain attention and a sense of being special". People say that anorexia doesn't stop at affecting the victim at hand; instead, it surpasses the anorexic. Which means that anorexia affects the personality of the person; that it branches off to affect other parts of that anorexics life. Body image obsession, self-devotion, attention grabbing, selfishness, are all attributes which keenly describe anorexia in the eyes of the media and most hospital institutions. It is that view point which affect modern societies view eating disorders, and anorexia in particular.

Everyone care about beauty and media comes in the way to for its interest by using body image as a tool which only exists in people’s mind. It is unbelievable that how media is blamed for its actions. In the article, “How the Media Keeps Us Hung Up on Body Image” by Shari Graydon, the author claims that women are suffering from unhealthy and harmful disorders due to media influence. As strength, Graydon raises the attention of the readers by giving information on how media is affecting women through the usage of celebrities, professionals and researches’ data. However, Graydon’s argument unpersuasive because the author uses radical evidences to manipulate the readers, also blames only to the media regardless of other factors and the solutions to protect the people against the media are ineffective.
The media is everywhere and takes up a great deal of people’s everyday lives. People depend on the media to provide them with information that would otherwise be hard to get. The people of society also use the media to communicate with friends, family, and people from all around the world. Also, the media serves as a means for entertainment. Businesses use the media as a way to advertise their products. The media affects society in many different ways; such as, businesses use the media to promote their products, the media effects communication, and the media affects body image and behavior of people in society.
