Short Term Memory Retrieval

Most people don't think of their brain's importance on a daily basis. However, the brain is a necessity. We use it to not only think but also remember. Through encoding, we gather information from things we sense with our 6 senses. This information becomes memories. There are short-term memory and long-term memory depending on how important this information is to our brains. Retrieval is also an important part of the process of memory because without it, people would be unable to remember anything. The memory is a long process that happens in a matter of seconds, and there are many important parts to memories. Encoding is when a person initially learns about new information. For memories to be stored, they need to be encoded into a form that our brains can cope with. Memories are encoded in the hippocampus, a region of the brain. There are three ways to encode memories. They are by visual, acoustic, and semantic; visual represents pictures, acoustic represents sound, and semantic represents meaning. For example, if a person is reading a book, they are memorizing it by visual. If they read the words from the book out loud, then they're memorizing it by sound. Encoding is important for recalling memories because if there was no encoding, everybody would simply be unable to remember anything. However, even if something is …show more content…

There's short-term memory (STM) and long-term memory (LTM). STM can usually be remembered or stored in our memories for about 0-30 seconds while LTM can last for about a lifetime. As we age, STM is stored for a shorter period of time. Aging and other conditions give us less of a chance to keep up with some tasks. STM can either be forgotten or be transferred to LTM. LTM seems to be a bit more complicated than STM because of its different types. Some types of LTM are explicit memory, implicit memory, and autobiographical memory. LTM is anything that is remembered from more than a few minutes
