The end of April is always dreary, but luckily this was the first sunny day in two weeks. Daniel and James, the two closest friends in the world, decided to go for a run. They balance each other perfectly. Daniel, the tall, tan athlete; and James, the small, skinny nerd. They could not be any more different, but, both had a burning passion for running, and felt trapped by the gloomy, somber drizzle. They itched to get out and run. The path they always take runs behind Daniel’s house, and through the wooded city park. They took this path because -for the most part- it was secluded, both found it easy to slip out of reality as they ran. The other reason they enjoyed this path was the challenge it presented, it twisted up and around the steepest …show more content…
Each of them slipped out of the real world and into their own. The ground was damp and muddy from the rain, but they continued anyway. They had been running for almost forty five minutes; and as Daniel and James got to the end of their run, they stopped to look out over the hill, as they always did. They were standing there for a couple minutes, then with no suggestion of instability, the ground under Daniel’s feet gave out, he plunged down the side of the hill. He hit every branch near him as if they were trying to grab him, but he slipped out of their grasp. When he got to the bottom, his head slammed against a rock and instantly lost consciousness. High above there was James, at the top of the steep hill, staring down in shock at his lifeless looking …show more content…
What is that? I’m going to go check it out,” Daniel said. Daniel stumbled over to the backpack, still a little dazed from the fall. He scraped the damp moss off of it, and then examined it. When he opened it, a rush of cool damp air greeted his face. It seemed to come from the bottom of the backpack. Being confused by this he looked inside where he found a note that read: In twenty four hours you’ll be dead, if it isn’t you it’ll be your friend. There’s no way around it one of you will die, you’d better hope it’s the right guy. After reading the note he felt chills run up his spine, he got the feeling that someone, or something had done something to his body. Not knowing what this all meant, he took the note and put it in his pocket so James couldn’t find it. He walked back to James, who had been sitting on a rock, pretending to not be interested in the backpack. He told James that it was just an empty, old backpack. James sensed that Daniel might not be telling the whole truth, but let it go because he figured Daniel might still be disoriented from hitting his
It all began with a childish game of jumping out of a tree into a river, a test of guts and will. All fun and games until that summer day when the star athlete is ready to jump out while his best friend follows him up the tree to jump next. The branch is shaken slightly, and suddenly the schoolÕs top athlete is lying on the ground with a broken leg. This event seems so small and feeble, but it will soon not only tear a friendship apart, but the whole school, as well.
Jack Reacher notices a woman struggling to carry her recently dry cleaned clothes. As she dropped her clothes on the dirty Chicago street, Jack decides to escort her to her destination while carrying her cumbersome load, which was easy for a strong 6 foot 4 man. As they begin to walk to her car they are cut off by two men holding pistols right at their stomachs. Being ex-military Jack Reacher starts to evaluate the grave situation, thinking of a way out without harm to him or her. He looks at the man facing him, he is a fit man, but appears very nervous and jittery as if he hadn’t done this before. Jack then looks at the man across from her. He observes his calmness and his stature. He can see that it is not his first time holding someone at gun point. The men are both in top physical shape, but not too much for Jack to handle. The man across from her commands both of them to get into the back seat of the white car on the side of the street. Jack in a matter of seconds examines the intense situation. He knows how to disarm the first man but can’t tell if the woman knows what to do in this event.
After James and Mrs.Atkinson talked awhile it got late so Mrs.Atkinson invited james to his house to talk more into details . It seems very strange why he invited him so very late after all he could of invite him some other day. After talking the entire day to each other Mrs.Atkinson told James to stay because it was really late. “The best thing we can do,” he continued,” is for you to stay here till twelve o’clock.” So James stayed and wrote of what had happened to him that day.
Furthermore, Birney portrays David as realistic. After falling from fifty feet high and having a rock thrust in his back, David knows his chances of survival chances are slim: “Perhaps … For what? A wheelchair, / Bob?” and again, “I looked / At last in his eyes. He breathed, ‘I’d do it for you, Bob.’ ” (ll. 133-134 and 151-152) Birney reveals how realistic David is through his words. Both him and Bobby know that it would take days for help to come, and whether David would be still be alive by then is uncertain. He wants Bobby to push him over, knowing what to expect if he remained by the ledge
Joshua Ferris, the author of the short story, “The Breeze”, closely links seasonal conditions and activities to different lifestyles. Specifically, Joshua links outdoor activities and spring in Manhattan to a life that needs “more adventure” and “thrills”. He also chooses to link indoor places and winter to the picture of a life that is “limited”, “dying” and “misspent”. Light and dark are also used as a binary within this story. What shows the connection between the ideas described is how the author uses repetition and patterns to emphasize his most important details.
My small, sweaty palms griped the cold fence as I looked on nervously at my brother’s baseball game. I was waiting for the final out of the game so that I could run onto the field and around the bases as I did after every game. As a young child, my parents were always searching for something to keep me entertained. I was a bubbly child with an endless amount of energy. Being that I was the only girl amongst four boys, I was always electrified in their presence. I wanted to be involved in all their wrestling, running and playing. Being the type of child who loved to play, I would stay outside until I was forced to come in. I would run along the dimly lit street, making up my own games and making new friends. Even when I got older, my energy did not fade. At
When first starting to read this novel, the readers are immediately introduced to each of the characters: James, his mother, his father, his sister, both of their boy friends, and John, his coworker. It becomes clear that James does not like to socialize, and because of this, he does not easily open up to the people around him. Due to this reason, the book is mainly told through his thoughts. It is apparent that James only...

Lightly jogging down the stairs to the back dorr, he pushes it open to cross the short path to the running track. He lets his mind wander. Is it too late to change his life? Season spent running in circles, starting and stopping at the same point on the track, a metaphor, he thinks, for his teaching career, now rutted like the track itself,in the soft years of familiarity. he bends down to retie his laces and notices that the air is surprisingly

It seems worse than it was before-he no longer has a roof over his head! But his fate changes-or he grabs the chance to change it. The day James is wandering on the beach he watches the billionaire Dan Cody take his boat out to sea. James notices that a storm is coming, and seizes the opportunity immediately. He borrows a boat and sails towards Cody to warn him. This signifies the process of liminality. Now, James is neither on land or in the middle of the sea-he is basically just in between, or just nowhere in comparison to his life. He has left his home behind, but he is not on the ‘other side’ either. He is essentially on the interface of the past and the future-there is no present at the moment. As he reaches towards Dan Cody, he is slowly trying to forget all that he was, and is aiming to become someone else instead. He is reaching towards his destiny, but is not quite there
Right of the bat, James comes to a realization that life can be a rough road. For example, James sees a kitten in the woods all alone. But on top of that, the kitten is half dead. He feels instant sympathy for the poor little kitten. Another example from the text states , ‘ Don't worry,’ “I tell it rubbing its scaly head…” (P.1) This shows that James is instantly connecting with the cat, because he has more so much sympathy that when he sees this little kitten half dead, he can't help but to feel bad. For instance when he brings this little kitten home even his strict mom had some sympathy for the cat, because the cat was in such bad condition. Which was a surprise for me because of how they portrayed the
As you could probably tell, my brother and I were quite different. Him being extravagantly gregarious and me being introverted and unmistakably lazy. I prefer curling up in bed with a good book. My brother and I trudged up the steep, undulating trail. He was yearning to take me to this cave he had discovered with his hiking group. He lacked the connoisseur characteristic as he always chose the most laborious hikes. I firmly believed the best hikes were non-existent ones. This was even more wearisome than any of the others hikes he's dragged me on. This being because our destination was on the tip top of a colossal mountain making the air meager and difficult to breathe. Being not even halfway up the mountain, my fatigue was incipient and I sincerely didn’t think I could take much more. I looked up ahead at my brother, who was far in front of me and ebullient, flying up the hill as if it was effortless. He abruptly stopped where he was. Not moving, not making a single sound. He looked back at me with an expression of sheer terror and
...terrupting them". The repetition of the word "hate" shows how he deeply hates his father. "disturbed the perfect simplicity and good sense of his relations with his mother", these words how James thinks of his father's existence as a burden, which he wishes to remove. Because he ruins and destroys the lovely relationship between James and his mother.
I awoke to the sun piercing through the screen of my tent while stretching my arms out wide to nudge my friend Alicia to wake up. “Finally!” I said to Alicia, the countdown is over. As I unzip the screen door and we climb out of our tent, I’m embraced with the aroma of campfire burritos that Alicia’s mom Nancy was preparing for us on her humungous skillet. While we wait for our breakfast to be finished, me and Alicia, as we do every morning, head to the front convenient store for our morning french vanilla cappuccino. On our walk back to the campsite we always take a short stroll along the lake shore to admire the incandescent sun as it shines over the gleaming dark blue water. This has become a tradition that we do every
I’ve decided to run again. As an alternative to racing, I ran on an incline. Some things are done for its own sake and others for something else (Ross, 1999). I ran on an incline to achieve a satisfied, self confidence in my body’s appearance. This is one of many ends, the immediate end. The end to which the potentiality of my body matches that of my mind. My mind is the result of vigorous cultivation via experience, decisions, knowledge, awareness, etc. The end to which I may feel beautiful, a physical virtue attributed by my psyche; a psychê that yearns to develop.
