Would you want shoplifters to be caught? Well, Tracking customers in stores across America is becoming very popular. Retailers are using cameras and smartphones to learn about there shoppers experience and tendencies. Critics would say this is should not be allowed because people should have freedom, but stores should track their customers. The stores track and film their customers because it can help identify shoplifters and it will help find discounts or items you may like. First of all, having these facial detection cameras could be a good thing. In paragraph eight of shop smart magazine, the author states “ Facial-detection technology determines customers age group, their sex, their ethnicity and maybe even their mood. This would be very helpful if someone steals from the store. Even if they try to hide their face …show more content…
In paragraph three of “Store's spy on customers by tracking cell phones,” Paula Ebben states “Stores say this type of Wi-Fi tracking is anonymous and it gives retailers important information that ultimately helps Customers, Like knowing when to put more cashiers at the registers or sales associates on a floor.” For example, if the workers look at the tracker and see 100 people all waiting to check out they can go send more people to fill up every register so the shoppers can leave faster and get a overall better experience. In paragraph 12 of “how and why retail stores are spying on you” The author says “If you check prices from other stores online while shopping somewhere else you can get a message from the store your at saying that they will match the price that the other store offered” For example if your shopping at Walmart and you check Target.com and something is $3 cheaper at target Walmart may send you a message saying they will sell it to you at the same price target would. That just makes everything way more convenient instead of driving store to store just to find low
Every type of building, from a high tech research lab, to a grocery store and even private residences can gain a physical security advantage utilizing CCTV video surveillance to guard against theft and break-ins. CCTV is a great tool for the security professional. It records everything on hours of tape. All that transpires be it; a routine day, a theft or robbery, arguments between employees, irate customers etc. But with all types of CCTV systems on the market one must choose what best fits their needs. As noted by Baker & Benny (2013) “ when considering the design and selection of a video surveillance system, the physical security designer, user, or integrator needs to consider the individual needs of each use case and market with which he or she is working” (p. 123). As in the case of Stew Leonard’s Grocery store, their CCTV’s systems includes 500 cameras! That is a lot of video to review for theft investigations. In the situation concerning the monitoring of the Innsbrook Resort residential properties, the security firm wanted to reduce the amount of false alarms that were occurring and the associated time wasted responding to them (Purvis, 2012, para. 12). In both cases, the clients
Stop customer theft by putting security systems in as well as keeping the tagging system. Have an alarm system where an alarm goes off, when a customer enters the store to make the staff alert that someone has entered. Have locks on all entrance ways (including into windows) into the
As technology get more advance, people use cameras, tracking devices in the stores to track customers shopping behavior. The retailers apply every detail that they get from anthropologists to get people buy their products. Some people claim that the surveillance of consumers by retail anthropologists is manipulative and unethical. However, the claim is not entirely true. Many retail use the data they get from anthropologists and apply it to their store to create great experiences for their customers, encourage customers to revisited, and ultimately improve business performances.
As we move through a typical day, this information is collected in thousands of ways. Charles Duhigg’s article “How Companies Learn Your Secrets” describes the collection, purchase, storage, and use of our personal information by the major retailer, Target. We all should know that we have agreed to the storage and sharing of our personal spending habits. The policies are disclosed in the Privacy Agreement of the stores shopper’s card, which most of us have.

In 1945, Sam Walton opened his first variety store and in 1962, he opened his first Wal-Mart Discount City in Rogers, Arkansas. Now, Wal-Mart is expected to exceed “$200 billion a year in sales by 2002 (with current figures of) more than 100 million shoppers a week…(and as of 1999) it became the first (private-sector) company in the world to have more than one million employees.” Why? One reason is that Wal-Mart has continued “to lead the way in adopting cutting-edge technology to track how people shop, and to buy and deliver goods more efficiently and cheaply than any other rival.” Many examples exist throughout Wal-Mart’s history including its use of networks, satellite communication, UPC/barcode adoption and more. Much of the technology that was utilized helped Sam Walton more efficiently track what he originally noted on yellow legal pads. From the very beginning, he wanted to know what the customers purchased, what inventory was selling and what stock was not selling. Wal-Mart now “tracks on an almost instantaneous basis the ordering, shipment, and delivery of literally every item it sells, and that it requires its suppliers to hook into the system, enabling it to track most goods every step of the way from the time they’re made and packaged in the factories to when they’re carried out store doors by shoppers.” “Wal-Mart operates the world’s most powerful corporate computing system, with a capacity (as of late 1999) of more than 100 terabytes of data (A terabyte is 1,000 gigabytes, or roughly the equivalent of 250 million pages of text.).
Gill, M., & Turbin, V. (1998). CCTV and shop theft: Towards a realistic evaluation: In C. Norris, J. Moran, & G. Armstrong (Eds.), Surveillance, closed circuit television and social control (1998) (pp. 189-204):. Aldershot: Ashgate: Print
Security cameras have become very widespread. These cameras are harmful to one’s safety and privacy. Security and surveillance cameras are both invasions of privacy
These items are sought after due to the fact that they are used as currency in the low income neighborhoods and are easily sold at local flea markets and to some of the local convenience store owners at a profit (Finklea, 2012). The volume of people who patron the Wal-Mart Supercenter makes it difficult to apprehend all theft suspects. As a result of the missed apprehensions, the perceived threat of apprehension on the part of the criminal is minimal. This minimal expectation of apprehension does little to deter the theft activities from occurring (Hayes, Downs, & Blackwood, 2012). During the times of the economic slowdown, Wal-Mart will occasionally reduce its loss prevention staff which exacerbates the theft problem (Gravelle & Rogers, 2011). As Wal-Mart reduces the number of loss prevention officers in the store, the probability of a successful apprehension
People all over the U.S. commit crimes. Shoplifting is most popular, it happens every day causing stores to pay hundreds of millions each year. There's no typical shoplifter — people who steal from stores can be any age, race, gender, and social and economic background.
Shoplifting is a major problem in today. The temptation of not paying for something, just hiding it away and saving your own money is a large factor for some people. The culprit just thinks he's getting a product for free and doesn't know what he's actually doing to himself and the community. Shoplifting effects everyone, yourself and the everyone in the local neighborhood. In this essay I'm going to explain some of the circumstances of stealing from local stores, or any store. After I've been caught stealing I found out how wrong it is and how it is a disadvantage to everyone.
There are some major upsides in having cameras in public places. In early 2013 two people set off bombs at the Boston marathon, which killed several people and injured hundreds. The city of Boston had cameras monitoring the streets, and was able to identify the bombers within two days. (La Vigne, Nancy) The FBI was able to catch them before they were able to carry out another planned attack in Times Square, which could have been much, more devastating. In addition to being able to solve crimes that have already happened by using cameras, we are also able to use them and the other technologies that go with it to prevent crime. The National Security Agency has reported that it has prevented several terrorist attacks since 2001 using new technology put in place to prevent the attacks. However, much of the NSA’s tactics have been criticized lately, though the majority of people still agree that it is worth it. Using cameras is also a cheap way to monitor an area. Having to employ several police officers to patrol an area can be expensive and those officers could be out doing more important jobs. When you have cam...
The surveillance camera plays a significant role to prevent crimes by warning the criminal that their unlawful activity will be filmed on cameras. Therefore, the police can easily arrest them and bring them back to justice. It helps providing useful evidence for trials and makes the prosecution easier. The major advantage of using surveillance cameras is to protect property from theft and vandalism, and ensures public safety. Using surveillance cameras in public places is very important, the cameras are capable to snap picture form far away, and it will help to investigate unlawful activity such as robbery, kidnapping, car accident, murder and drug dealing. Currently in New York City the FBI found lots of evidence that terrorist might plant to attack especially in subway and crowded place. New York City spends millions of dollars on security cameras, to keep track on terrorist activities everywhere in the city. Only In lower Manhattan there are 3,000 cameras monitoring the entire area. People will feel safer from terrorist attacks such as bombing, gun shooting, and other violence crimes. The offenders might not see the camera, but the camera will record his action. The other criminal or terrorist will learn lesson that even though there is no police, the security can see whatever they doing through the camera. Therefore, they might able to take action before the crime happen. I strongly agreed that surveillance must be setup in the public and business places, it can’t eliminate crimes but it will able to reduce crimes.
This might appear obvious to many shoppers. But I believe multitudes of people purchase items without ever considering what they buy could be found elsewhere for less money. Even I am guilty of assuming that Walmart has the best prices on everything. If I take a small amount of time to search for a specific coffee maker, I can find the large chain store 's prices such as Walmart, Target, Best Buy, and Sears, along with other smaller retailers. (In some cases smaller stores ' prices are lower.) Many stores price match, so if I prefer to shop at Walmart because I live close to one, I can have them match the competing retailers lower price. Also, many retailers provide free shipping on online orders totaling a certain amount. Therefore, if physically visiting the store with the lowest prices is not feasible, shoppers can order items online for no extra charge. However, ordering from brick-and-mortar stores—physically or online—is not always the best option. Websites such as Amazon and eBay have millions of items from multiple sellers. Sellers will compete with each other for the lowest price, often providing shoppers with a price lower than those of larger stores. Regardless of how and where you purchase your items, taking time to shop around is a wise
Security cameras can be found all over the mall from stores to the food courts to ensure safety. If we go back to six-seven years ago there was a shooting in the Muskogee Oklahoma mall didn’t have those cameras for proof of evidence the man convicted of shooting a child and other people would have a long trial but since they did they had all the proof they needed.
