“Shoo Fly Shoo” Katie Caren- Research Paper Lake Butler Middle School Hi, my name is Katie Caren. My project is “Shoo Fly Shoo”. I hope to learn what fly spray works the best on my Braford steer. I want to find this out because flies are always bothering my steer and I want to try and help keep the flies off of him. FLIES: Flies are a type of insect. Fly is a common name for insects of the order of Diptera, or true flies. These flies include the small house fly, fruit flies, gnats, mosquitoes, horse flies, midges, blow flies, bot flies, crane flies, and deer flies. The Diptera …show more content…
compromise of a large order, containing an estimated 240,000 species. Flies have many small parts. No species of flies have teeth and any limbs or organs that allow it to eat food. Flies are adapted for aerial movement and usually have short and streamlined bodies. Most true flies have a pair of flight wings on their themesothorax. The flies also have a pair of halteres, derived from the hind wings, on the metathorax (Some species are exceptional that the are flightless). All flies develop through metamorphosis. They go through four stages, which are: the egg, larva, pupa, and adult. A female fly lays 100 to 160 eggs. Usually, the female fly will lay her eggs in decaying organic matter and to as close to a food source as possible, allowing the larvae to consume as much food as possible before turning into adults. The eggs hatch immediately after being born. The flies could also be ovoviviparous, with the larvae hatching inside the mother. Flies occur in great populations due to their ability to mate effectively and in a short period of time during the mating season. Larval flies have no true legs. Some Dipteran larvae, such as Simuliidae, have prolegs adapted to such functions as holding onto a substrate in flowing water. The pupae take various forms. In some cases, they develop inside a silk cocoon. Most adult dipterans can live about one month. FLY SPRAY: Fly spray is a chemical insecticide. It contains many chemicals. Fly spray is used to kill flies or keep flies away. Fly spray will kill various flying insects, such as mosquitoes, wasps, house flies, and horse flies. Fly spray comes in aerosol cans or in plastic bottles. Fly spray is dangerous to pets and fish and should be used with caution. Fly sprays kill insects by interrupting nerve signals from the motor neurons in the insect, which causes flies to go into a permanent contraction which makes flying and respiration impossible and the insects then die later of asphyxia. BRAFORD CATTLE: The Braford is a cross between a Hereford bull and a Brahman cow.
It can also be a cross between a Brahman bull and a Hereford cow. The Braford is a breed of beef cattle. The make up of a Braford is ⅜ Brahman and ⅝ Hereford. A true Braford meets those standards, but a cow that is ½ Brahman and ½ Hereford cross is know as F1 Brafords or F1 Baldies. Braford cattle carry the characteristics of both parents. The Braford can be red or black with white underbellies, heads, and feet, like a Hereford. The Braford is stockier than the Hereford, getting that characteristic from the Brahman. The Braford also gets the characteristics of loose skin and a small hump from the Brahman. Brafords are mostly used for beef, but sometimes they are used for rodeo. Brafords were developed in both Australia in 1946 and in Florida in 1947. Brafords have heat and insect resistance due to the increased number of sweat glands and oily skin inherited from their Brahman heritage. Brafords have been known to be of an ornery disposition, though this could be due to their raising. This predisposition toward being difficult is still being debated. Brafords are often used in rodeos because of their massive bulk and bone density, heat endurance, hardiness, and arguably their ornery disposition. Brafords do very well in warm climates. Brafords have also been raised in northern climates. They seem to do well there too, most likely due to their great bulk. Brafords have a rarity of getting blight, pink eye, eye cancer, and getting

Thesis Statement: Mary Aprarico Castrejon’s essay “The Fighter Bird” reveals her family’s poor living situation and the grit which members of her family, like herself and her papi, have despite of their situation.
Charles Lindbergh played a significant role during the World War II era by acting as an example of a neutral countries changing mindsets. America of the 1930 's had believed in isolationism and neutrality. Dealing with the depression on the home front was more important to the people than some foreign threat affecting Europe. For many Americans, the imminent war and atrocities that would soon affect European countries seemed inconceivable. But the events of the war would soon push and pull them further away from their isolationist views and start a change within the country.
Theme of Flight in Song of Solomon Clearly, the significant silences and the stunning absences throughout Morrison's texts become profoundly political as well as stylistically crucial. Morrison describes her own work as containing "holes and spaces so the reader can come into it" (Tate 125), testament to her rejection of theories that privilege the author over the reader. Morrison disdains such hierarchies in which the reader as participant in the text is ignored: "My writing expects, demands participatory reading, and I think that is what literature is supposed to do.
The tale of the flying African represents a common dream, a common disappointment, and a group identity. As the object of Milkman's quest, it suggests a multi-leveled equivalence between individual identity and community. Simply as a folktale, it is an artifact of Afro-American history; its content links Afro-American to pan-African history; it is localized to represent Milkman's family history. His discovery of the tale thus repre-
The novel Flight by Sherman Alexie is a story about a time traveling Indian foster kid who goes to shoot up a bank, but instead he gets transported through time and receives valuable lessons on how to deal with his main issue of abandonment. Every time he leaps into a new body the lessons get progressively difficult. Yet when he jumps into the last body, he must face the person that he blames the most, his father.
Flight is a major theme in Toni Morrison's Song of Solomon. “Flight echoes throughout the story as a reward, as a hoped-for skill, as an escape, and as proof of intrinsic worth; however, by the end this is not so clear a proposition”(Lubiano 96). Song of Solomon ends with ‘flight’ but in such a way that the act allows for multiple interpretations: suicide; "real" flight and then a wheeling attack on his "brother"; or "real" flight and then some kind of encounter with the (possibly) killing arms of his brother.
Richard Conniff uses strong scientific facts in his essay to get his major point across to the audience. One of the major facts he uses stood out as it disproved many a wives tale about the common household fly. Most people think of flies as dirty animals who fed on dead animals and spread disease. Conniff uses a study that found flies tested from dirty areas contained more a lot mor...
Kids and adults enjoy Amusement Park rides because it is fun and relaxing. If you haven’t tried it, you should try it. The Amusement Parks have rides such as Xtreme Skyflyer, Gold Striker, and Superman roller coaster. I think the most important one is Xtreme Skyflyer because a lot of the people want to try it, and people want to see whole the things when they go very high. The Xtreme Skyflyer is also one of the scary, it 153 feet above ground and dive at speed up to 60 miles per hour while falling 17 stories toward the earth (Great America). This Xtreme Skyflyer is a release of endorphins, which makes us feel euphoric. Which is heightened by the fact that a lot of people feel scared and worried while waiting in line. So, by having you wait
In the essay “The Three Father Figures In Tian Zhuangzhuang’s Film The Blue Kite: The Emasculation of Males by the Communist Party”, Hanna Nielsen describes how men were stripped of their power by the Communist party, at least as depicted by The Blue Kite. “They are all incapable of fulfilling the traditional role of the father because this role is usurped by the Party to which their lives will be ultimately forfeit.” (Nielsen 84) “They” being the three fathers the main character loses over the course of the film, which according to Nielsen are replaced by the party. However, in focusing almost entirely on the men of the story, both Nielsen and the film are guilty of ignoring the women in the story. Similar to Nielsen’s point about emasculating men, I would argue that The Blue Kite also presents a narrative of women being defeminized as the party disrupts the traditional workings of the home.
In this lab, we experimented on wingless samples of Drosophila. Now, there are two different types of fruit flies as discovered by Marla Sokolowski; one walks around more than the other. The names Rover and Sitter are given respectively. The main difference between the two types are demonstrated when feeding. Speaking of which, fruit flies don’t feed on the fruit itself, what they feed on are the bacteria that grow on rotting fruit. The fruit flies find food to eat via the use of chemoreceptors, which alert the fly that there is food nearby by stimulating its sense of smell. They will then fly over to the food source and start feeding. Now this is where the difference between Rovers and Sitters comes to play. Let’s say the fruit fly runs out
The narrator, meanwhile, describes the people as mere flies, a nuisance born in manure.
To most people not much to happen in 10 seconds but when it comes to roping calves 10 seconds is a lifetime. In that 10 seconds it feels like everything can go right or everything can go wrong. If everything goes right in that time then when 10 seconds comes the time could have already stopped and you already be back on your horse. If everything goes wrong in those 10 seconds then you could still be hung up in your rope or something else could go wrong and 10 seconds can not even be half the time it takes you to rope flank and tie.
George Herbert, the seventeenth century poet and author, lived and wrote at the dawn of an age of reason, when the English people were students of both the sciences, such as chemistry and physics, and of religion. This was a time when "Clergymen were authorities on all matters, bishops designed flying boats, lawyers knew the fine points of theology, [and] physicians wrote exquisite lyrics and impassioned prose" (Witherspoon 298). In such a time, a literary work would quickly be forgotten if it could not inspire interest. Thus it is, perhaps, that Herbert wrote some of his most strongly religious poems, such as "Easter Wings" and "The Altar," with such an eye-catching and unique style of construction. In "Easter Wings," Herbert uses a highly uncommon form, both in appearance and mechanics, to draw attention to a simple and otherwise familiar religious subject. The very pattern, language, and shape all serve to emphasis the common content of the poem.
Insect, small, air-breathing animal characterized by a segmented body with three main parts—head, thorax, and abdomen. In their adult forms, insects typically have three pairs of legs, one pair of antennae, and in most instances, two pairs of wings. Insects rank among the most successful animals on Earth. About one million species of insects have been identified so far, which is about half of all the animals known to science. That is why for every pound of human on the earth there are 10 pounds of insects. So that is why there are many reasons why insects are so successful, their exoskeleton, their size, their body function, the way they reproduce, and their development of metamorphosis.
The chemical control of aphids using insecticidal soaps is a more environmentally friendly option. The use of chemical pesticides is widespread due to the relatively low cost, the ease with which they can be applied and their effectiveness, availability and stability. Chemicals pesticides are generally fast acting, which limits the damage done to crops. The key with using the soap sprays is that it has to contact the aphids when you spray so thorough coverage is
