Sherlock Holmes
Sherlock Holmes is a famous fictional detective with his own series of
books written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle between the late 1800’s and
early 1900’s otherwise known as the Victorian era in England. The
stories were set in London on Baker Street. The people of Victorian
England loved Sherlock Holmes because he always got his man, and the
police in their time could not get anyone.
Another reason the English people from the Victorian era loved
Sherlock Holmes is the way he solves the crimes. He is observant,
intelligent, has a sense of humour, brave and makes deductions very
well from almost nothing. Sherlock is a tall slim man with sharp
piercing eyes, square shoulders, and known for his hat and pipe, which
he smokes quite a lot. He sometimes acts stupidly to catch criminals
or uses role reversal and take the criminals for fools. Sherlock
Holmes is seen as an amateur detective that you can count on.
In “The Red Headed League” Holmes shows he is truly a great detective
by changing personalities to handle the suspects. He uses sarcasm,
intelligence, his ability to appear calm and relaxed, sense of humour
and of course his deductive and observant mind. In this story,
however, he mainly uses his observant mind and sense of humour. ‘Until
the comical side of the affair so completely over-topped every other
consideration that both burst out into a roar of long laughter.’ He
has the criminal copying from a dictionary for no reason, which is
quite amusing. Then he uses both his sense of humour and observant
mind when he says ‘Behind the obvious fact that he has at sometime
done some manual labour, that he takes snuff, that he is a freemason,
and that he has done a considerable amount of wri...

like most middle class people at the time, it appealed to them along
with the fact that he was like the justice they were not receiving
because he always got his man.
The stories are popular today because they are set in London but not
modern London Victorian London. Since they were written in the
Victorian period the plot and structure of the original stories are
seen to be well written, very imaginative and including a variety of
characters, crimes and types of clues. Also since the police in the
Victorian era couldn’t solve anything Sherlock Holmes was seen as a
hero because he would always solve his crimes in a unique and
flawlessly constructed way and since he was the first literary super
hero working to help the underdog modern day people, including me,
have to respect his stories, like them or not.
For a while he finished the stories, but with debts and great public support he created another collection of the Holmes stories, due to the fact they were in high demand. Conan Doyle sadly died in Crowborough, Sussex, England, on July 7, 1930. Holmes is an intellectual detective who although spends a lot of the time by his self still depend on a valiant partner to accompany him on his cases, in this case Dr Watson. Dr Watson, in the Sherlock Holmes stories, is portrayed as particularly as an average British person helping his friend in his cases. Because he is portrayed as this it helps us see ourselves in the story along with Holmes therefore, intriguing the reader to usually read more.

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is best known for his Sherlock Holmes stories. Although he did many more, these proved to be the most popular to this very day. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was born in Edinburgh in 1859 and lived until 1930. The time in which Sir Conan Doyle lived, had a great influence on his work. Doyle served in the South African Wars as a doctor. This influenced him because when he returned to England he wrote "The Boer War," and "The War in South Africa: Its Causes and Conduct" which justified England's participation. For these works he was knighted in 1902. During World War I he wrote the "History of British Campaign in France," and "Flanders" as a tribute to British bravery. One of Doyle's famous Sherlock Holmes story is "The Speckled Band." This is the murder Mystery I am using to compare to Roald Dahl's "Lamb to the Slaughter"
The idea of a detective catching an elusive convict or solving an improbable crime has been prevalent in all corners of the world, spread throughout many cultures and societies. The detective genre is held as the idea that an individual has to solve a crime. This detective usually has nothing to gain from solving the crime, but they see it more as an obstacle. The detective doesn’t always take every case, as human beings, we are too often curious of the impossible; our natural instinct is to question why and how things work in this world. People crave mystery, to taste a bit of improbable, to see what the detectives see, to see what is overlooked by many. The idea of an intelligent witty, sharp “sleuth” with an obedient sidekick has been prevalent
The Study of Kinship *Works Cited Missing* When studying kinship, it is needless to say that just one type of society can justify for kinship patterns; rather, to be able to identify and understand the differences of kinship systems, one needs to do a cross-cultural comparison. I’ve decided to compare the system of the Trobriand Islanders of the South Pacific, to the very loose kinship arrangement of the Ju’wasi San of the Kalahari. These two societies have been chosen as they represent different levels of social, cultural, and technological complexities. The Ju’wasi were gatherers and hunters, living in small, mobile groups; the Trobrianders were horticulturists living in villages of up to 400 people. The Trobrianders (Malinowski: early 20th century and Powell: mid 20th century) live in some 80 villages whose populations range from 40 – 400.
“People who are in earnest are always interesting, whether you agree with them or not” (The Chronicles). Doyle may be known as the author of Sherlock Holmes, but there are other facets to his life. On account of some strange events that occurred, Doyle was persuaded into thinking that spiritual beings existed. As Doyle’s career advanced he drew the attention of many to himself. He succeeded both by gaining supporters and detractors. He built on his fame by giving lectures. These aspects of his life are connected; his painful childhood led him to a successful medical career where his writing and life partner stepped into the picture. These aspects, when combined, led Doyle to a new world view of spiritualism.
After concluding the role of Sherlock Holmes as a detective in the story of the Speckled Band, I know that he was one of the most famous detectives in the world, and he bought into the world of detectives different skills and abilities, also, bought his own natural talent and set some very high standards, which detectives these days find

The word honor parallels words like loyal and respect. War heroes and judges are associated with being honorable. A man who considers himself to be extremely antisocial and lacking a conscience does not mirror these traits. However, Sherlock Holmes’ ability to solve the most baffling crimes brings justice to many who would otherwise get away with their crimes. Just as war heroes sometimes give their lives for a greater cause like keeping their countrymen safe, Sherlock sacrifices himself to save others. Trust, fighting for justice, and self-sacrifice are all characteristics associated with honor, too. Sherlock Holmes is an honorable man in Sherlock, despite what most of the other characters think and say about him.
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle writes a short story about how innocence gets victimized by a royal subject. When a royal figure clashes with someone who is not equal in social class, he will do anything to hide his mistake. This is when the King hires Sherlock Holmes. Arthur Conan Doyle based Holmes off of a man named Dr. Joseph Bell, who was a friend of his in medical school. When Doyle saw that medical practice was not a success, he began writing Holmes stories for money. The public became infatuated with not only the stories, but mainly Sherlock Holmes. Additionally, Thomas could have also explored the idea that not only do the Sherlock Holmes stories provide examples where the criminal is scientifically describable and recognizable, but they provide examples where Holmes uses his detective eye and knowledge of anatomy to identify criminals and victims in each case. For instance, in “The Cardboard Box,” when Holmes is explaining how he determined that the
