The book Shane by Jack Schaefer is about a cowboy gunslinger named Shane. Shane is a traveling cowboy who finds his way to a loving family’s home to seek peace and refuge from his past. Shane struggles with his inner self, overcoming his violent past, his search for peace, and his duty to protect the Starret family from the landowner and his men. Despite this struggle, Shane displays many exceptional traits. Throughout the entire book, Shane is very dangerous and displays bravery and resilience. Shane, through the entire book, shows his resilience. When Shane had a dispute with the Cowboys, he sustained many injuries. Despite this, he ignored his pain and went to defend the Starrett family from further attacks. There was a tree stump on the farm that Joe, the father of the family, was trying to uproot. Shane and Joe spent hours chopping the roots nonstop to get it out. Shane struggles with emotion in the book. When Shane encounters an old companion from his past, he addresses him by his name and reveals things from his past. Shane doesn’t let the emotions control him. Shane decided that the unfair treatment from the ranchers was enough and went to confront the leader of the ranchers. He fought every one of them to defend the family's home. Shane knew the ranchers were armed and still went in there to fight against all the odds when a fire broke out. When a fire broke out on the farm, Shane ran into the flames to get the animals out and was there to help extinguish the flame. When Shane was challenged to a fight by Wilson, the baron says Shane doesn't want to fight with violence until Wilson threatens the starlet family.
