A girl who was a new pledge on a college campus was sexually assaulted by three fraternity boys. In these stories, you will always hear the offender blaming the victim which is usually never the case. The college campus looked the other way and did not do anything to help her just because they wanted to save the “image” people had of their school. Thank God this girl had a lawyer who went to Harvard Law School or else, the boys might have never been put away (RAINN: Victim Stories). Sexual violence is any type of forced or coerced sexual contact or behavior that happens without consent. It affects hundreds of thousands of Americans each year (RAINN: About Sexual Assault). These services are helping to train people on how to handle these incidents and victim response. Victim response can include guilt, anger, sadness, depression, etc (Living Out Loud article). RAINN has been around for more than twenty years and they have a lot of experience with victims and helping them. There is a business group within this organization called the Best Practices Certification Program (RAINN: Consulting and Training). It is designed to reduce instances of sexual assault and ensure a coordinated response, should sexual violence occur. In the article, “Out of the Shadows” by Sharon Cotliar, it describes sexual abuse back then at a younger age. It states, “In those days, it was very spontaneous and casual, and it did not seem wrong” (Cotliar 1). That is why RAINN created these programs. RAINN created and operates the National Sexual Assault Hotline that is accessible 24/7. This hotline has helped save 2.3 million survivors from doing something that might hurt them more (RAIN: Victim Services). For example, in the article, “Living Out Loud” by Albert Chen, he talks about a girl named Imani Boyette, who is a University of Texas women’s basketball star, and how she found out she had been assaulted by her grandfather and another family member. It says, “While she has no memory of the abuse, she felt confused, angry and betrayed…” (Chen 3). Her automatic reaction started off as angry and became sadness and guilt, to the point where she attempted suicide. Imani has even said herself, “I was a walking cry for help” (Boyette; quote from article). RAINN has these services so the victims can talk about it and prevent these things from happening. Imani had no one to talk to about it because she was scared, so maybe if this was around at the time, it could have prevented her
