Deviance and Crime
Crime is conduct that violates the formal composed laws of a general public. If someone commits a crime they can be arrested, charged and indicted. Activities can be unlawful but not deviant. Deviance is any conduct that disregards social standards, and is usually of sufficient severity to warrant disapproval from the majority of society.
The article “Sexual Slavery” is an example of both crime and deviance. The article talks about both men and women who are forced into sexual slavery. Whenever someone breaks a law and commits a crime, they are technically breaking a norm in society and that will cause that person to be a criminal as well as a deviant by their definitions.

Those who are trapped in these harsh situations go through tough psychological difficulties which alter their behavior and personalities. These interactions indirectly but significantly affect society because people generally live in large populations and their behaviors and personalities are exposed to the public.
Sex trafficking is a social problem that is caused by deviance and we need to figure out what exactly is causing this deviance to occur and why these people feel it is humane to do what they are doing to these poor victims. The functionalist perspective argues that the presence of a certain amount of deviance in society is good as it contributes to society’s overall stability. Deviance clarifies social norms and helps societies to maintain social control over people’s behavior. The best theory to explain sex trafficking is the conflict perspective. There are different groups in society; there are conflicts between these groups that generate economic inequality. The lack of jobs, low wages and high cost of living caused by inflation provides an opportunity to human traffickers. Conflict theorists imply that women are being used as "Sex Slaves" because they are helpless and being taught that they are nothing.
