Sexual Education Programs for Older Adults American culture has a taboo that revolves around talking about sex. This stigma is also subjected to older adults, as society tends to think that they cannot or should not participate in sex. This creates a medical and social problem as people are unsure how to breach the topic. Clinicians are often guilty of neglecting the topic of sex with their older clients as they assume that they will not be engaging in sex. By not talking about sex with ones client because of personal biases can subtly reinforce existing feelings of shame, discomfort, or self-doubt onto a client who already has feelings of embarrassment in regards to the topic of sex. Educational programs for older adults on sexuality can …show more content…
The people experiencing the workshops are likely those in upper middle class senior centers, as the program entails procedures on how to meet with your doctor and discuss your sexual activity, yet it does not factor in if people are able to afford a healthcare visit. The vertical adequacy seems as if it could be good if more promotion of the program was created. The program does a good job of clearing sexual misconceptions, empowering older adults that they can participate in sex, and taking in to account health concerns such as sexual dysfunction, chronic disease, and the general aging process (Anonymous, …show more content…
I think the program would benefit on having a specific brochure that focuses on how adults who have or may be considering to transition can discuss the process and sexual concerns with their doctors. Having more information about this would also benefit physicians in understanding how to appropriately talk about sex education with transitioned clients as well. With some of these shortcomings, the sexual education program is not as whole. The program also does not specifically take into account cultures views on sex. While the program is not forced on to anyone I think, Love & Life would benefit from addressing how various cultures feel about sex. Some cultures do not believe in premarital sex and this could cause a problem for a widow or widower who still has an active sex drive. There is various ways that this program could become all encompassing instead of focusing on heterosexual and nonreligious views of elder adults. The program needs to reevaluate the target population of older adults because the community can be more diverse then how the program is currently set up. NCOA and other communities using this program need to understand that while the information is useful it may not be applicable or designed for all older adults
Over the last century, the life expectancy of the elderly has increased. This means that the largest growing population right now, in the United States, is persons over the age of 65 (Sex Tips for Older Adults, 2000). With this in mind, it would be helpful to talk about the personal aspects or as I like to call it, "sex lives" of the elderly. When people in our society think of the elderly, they almost never think of this population having sex or good sex for that matter. But they do! Unfortunately, the elderly encounter problems with sex as they become older and that is what I will be discussing along with way of coping with sexual dysfunction.
As with all issues, there are many evident stakeholders who are continuously affected by Florida’s lack of an effective and standardized sex education program within it...
Everyone has an opinion about sexuality education. From vocal parents at PTA meetings to state governors who must decide whether to apply for federal funding for abstinence-only-until-marriage programs or more comprehensive sexuality programs, or both, or neither. From school pri...
As stated by Collins (2007), the privacy and openness to discuss intimate issues can stimulate vulnerability with the client. Another ethical issue with this theory can be a growing dependence with the counselor. An additional ethical issue with this therapy is for the client to know his or her vulnerability regarding emotional or sexual needs when it comes to counseling a client (Corey, 2007). An additional ethical issue for the Individual Psychology therapy is that there may be some confusion as times to what is to happen in the counseling
How does sex education affect teen pregnancy and the AIDs epidemic, and how is it tolerated in schools? For many years sex education in schools has been a controversial topic in the United States. Sex education in schools is highly debated because some think it encourages students to engage in sexual behaviors that can lead to a STD or teen pregnancy. The AIDs epidemic was one reason sex education became mandatory in many states. The younger the students receiving sex education the more effective it seemed to be. The deliberation about sex education in schools explains why it is still a controversial topic in America.
I believe that this would be very effective in the United States because it assumes that most people are sexually active and promotes the use of safe sex. The training aids used in Ugandan presentations as well as in British presentations were very explicit; they not only described exactly what would happen to people, but also showed unadulterated pictures of how it affects the body and the genitals. Unfortunately in America, politicians assume that this type of approach is too explicit and will not sit well with the majority (Christian) population. For some reason they are also very strict on believing that most people wait until they are married to become sexually active and are monogamous in all of their relations. They are essentially blind to the way that the country works because it is not the way they want the country to work.
Sex education in schools now seems to be more and more of a controversial issue. People are arguing over what the curriculum should be in sex education, if it should be taught in schools or at home by parents and the main point of this paper if sex education is actually doing what it was set out to do. The idea behind this paper is to determine if sex education in schools really does keep down the amount of teens with STD’s or who become pregnant.
How many girls have you see around school who are pregnant? Do you ever come to think that they may not have had the “sex talk” with their parents or any sort of sex education at school? “The United Stated still has the highest teen pregnancy rate of any industrialized country. About 40 percent of American women become pregnant before the age of 20. The result is about 1 million pregnancies each year among women ages 15 to 19.” (The Annie E. Casey Foundation) At the age 15-20 most teen males and females don’t have a stable job and are still going to school. There is much at risk when a male and female decide to have sexual intercourse. Having a sex education class would help decrease the teen pregnancy rate. Learning what one can do to prevent a teen pregnancy and the consequences that can lead up to it, will help reduce the amount of sexual activity among teens. Having a sex education class that is required will benefit the upcoming teens of the next generation. Some parents don’t want their teens to have premarital sex and some parents don’t want the schools to be the ones responsible to teach their kids about sex education because they feel like it’s their job. There has been much controversy on sex education being taught at school.
Sex and relationship education (SRE) is supporting children through their moral, physical and psychological aspects of growing up to be an adult, and making sure they have knowledge on relationships, sex, human sexuality and sexual health (Sex Education Forum, 2010). There are three main elements in SRE, the first element is attitudes and values, which is about developing positive values and be able to consider moral issues before they make their decisions on having intercourse (Kirby, 2007). The second element is personal and social skills, which is about teaching children to have the confidence to value themselves and others to become respectful for individual conscience and the skills to judge the kind of relationship they want; the third element is about accessing the knowledge and understanding of human sexuality, reproduction, sexual health, emotions and relationships (Kirby, 2007). The potential effect of SRE should be seen in these three areas, which includes reduction in teenager pregnancy, and the chances of getting sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and being sexually assault, etc. As SRE can either be given at home to the child by parents, in school by teachers, or in youth organizations, alternative educational institutions, or youth offending organizations by Shine staffs or trained peer educators and volunteers (Levy 1992). This essay is mainly going to focus on the teacher-led SRE given in school and discuss whether it is beneficial or not, with the support of the positive outcome of children having SRE in relation of STDs, pregnancy and peer violence, and also the actual fact of SRE being not useful, supported with the data of teenagers not receiving the knowledge they should have been taught in SRE, and high te...
Kazer, M. W. (2012). Sexuality assesment for older adults. Try this: Best Practices in Nursing
In the United States, there is a rising problem that is not going anywhere anytime soon, that is if we, as citizens, don 't change it. This problem is causing billions of dollars and people 's futures all because schools would rather teach ignorance than the truth. What’s the problem? Sex education. Although sex education may not seem like a rising conflict, it is actually one of the top controversial topics in our country regarding education. According to Brigid McKeon, “Each year, U.S. teens experience as many as 850,000 pregnancies, and youth under age 25 experience about 9.1 million sexually transmitted infections (STIs)” (McKeon). This number is so unbelievable to any sane person, but somehow schools still won 't take the initiative to teach realistic sex education. Sex education can be taught in two different procedures- comprehensive or abstinence only. The difference between the two methods is that comprehensive sex education teaches abstinence as a secondary choice, so that teens who decide not to wait are well educated on how to keep themselves protected. Comprehensive sex education should be required in every single public school because it is the most effective method on how to keep teenagers well informed and prepared.
Sexual education has been a heated topic for years. The topic started in 1912 when the National Education Association wanted teachers to begin lecturing in sex ed programs.(Pardini, Priscilla) In 1940 the U.S. Public Health Service labeled sexual education an “urgent need” and strongly advocated it in schools.(Pardini, Priscilla) Though sexual education had support from health officials and educators, there were many opponents.(Pardini, Priscilla) Conservatives and health advisors battled over how sex ed benefits and how it should be taught in schools.(Pardini, Priscilla)
With the current sex education being taught there is a central focus on heteronormativity and the male reproductive system. The course needs to be changed to something more inclusive so it accomplishes what it is put in place to accomplish, which is to teach people about sex and how it affects their bodies. By allowing more people to have access to take a sexual education course the course will have more opportunities to be interpreted and changed in different ways to make it more inclusive and helpful for all people. Before the remake of sex education can start, sex education must begin to be offered and accessible to all women across the
Why should comprehensive sex education be allowed in schools? Should teens be exposed to comprehensive sex education? Sex education should be taught in school because it give children stable and accurate information , it informs them of the danger and diseases associated with sex, and it teaches them about safe sex options.
Before moving on, one must know that sex education is about, but not limited to the discussion of sexual intercourse. As a Buzzle article states, it involves a multitude of topics that introduce human sexual behaviors such as puberty, sexual health, sexual reproduction, sexuality, and more (Iyer). If formally received in school, these topics are brought up and discussed at age-appropriate times over the course of children’s junior high and high school education. Moreover, as I have introduced earlier, the way sex education should be taught is divided into two approaches. It is between taking either a conservative, abstinence-only approach or a more liberal, comprehensive approach. Abstinence-only education, approaches students by stressing the importance of “no sex before marriage” as be...
