Initial Reflection Paper I think that the term deviance is definitely used to cover a great deal of things. In my opinion deviance is used referring to anything not fitting in with what society or the common person feels is normal and acceptable. When I think of deviance the first few things that come to mind are serial killers, sexual deviance, and cults.
I think of killers because throughout most of history one taboo that has remained frowned upon has been murder. Even more taboo than just taking a life is the taking of multiple lives and gaining a sense of satisfaction from it. I remember first hearing the term sexual deviance from a crime novel that I picked up. When thinking of things that are usually considered off limits in conversation, sex is definitely one of the first things that comes to mind. If sex is already seen as something that is a little bit taboo, then it is not particularly difficult to see how someone who has sexual preferences that are considered different or at least out of the ordinary would be seen as a deviant. I am less certain how cults are seen as being deviant simply because it is hard to define what exactly constitutes a cult. Cults may be …show more content…

I only know some of the very basic sides of this argument but from what I know about the argument combined with information I have gained from being interesting in crimes and in the people committing them, I think that the people being considered deviant, are a mix of both nature and nurture with a slight emphasis on nurture. I say this because I firmly believe that experiences help to shape individuals. By saying that I would lean more towards nurture than nature, I am not saying that nature does not affect the person, I am saying that I think that nurture just affects the individual a bit more than just being born a certain
