Sexual Assault On College Campuses: A Speech Analysis

When making the decision of what to write my speech on, I wanted to shed a light on a certain group that does not receive a lot of recognition in a widely talked about topic with college students. This led me to argue for a better recognition of male victims of sexual assault crimes. Sexual assault has recently been discussed frequently considering the statistics that prove it is an epidemic in the United States especially on college campuses. What hasn’t been talked about is the somewhat large population of male victims. My audience is comprised of Seattle U communication students, I assume they know of the sexual assault crimes that frequently occur on college campuses. At first glance, this might seem like the wrong choice because it does not catch the audience’s attention right away. But by doing this, I am letting the audience fill in the blanks and presenting a sort of script so that they think they know what to expect. For example, by presenting the idea of sexual assault on college campuses, they might assume I am only going to talk about it from the traditional perspective of women victims. They might also assume that I will discuss how college administrations do not handle reports correctly. Then, I change the script by presenting a new idea they may have never thought about before: the somewhat large population of male sexual assault victims. Using statistics in a speech is often a turn-off, especially if there is no visual aid because it is sometimes difficult for the audience to comprehend. However, to prove that males are victims of sexual assault more frequently then assumed by the general public, statistics are necessary. This calls for me to only use simple statistics that effectively explain the problem but do not confuse my audience. To do this, I included the statistic of Male college-aged students (18-24) are 78% more likely than non-students of the same age to be a victim of rape or sexual assault (Rosin). I also included that a national crime survey found that in 40,000 households about rape and sexual violence, the survey uncovered that 38 percent of incidents were against men (Rosin). The first statistic proves that college campuses are a dangerous environment for both male and females for sexual assault. The second statistic proves that sexual assault is an alarming crime that affects a large amount of male victims. In order to be nonbiased and credible, I must include facts that prove my point so the evidence is right in front of my audience that this is a serious and alarming
