Service to other is helping others solving their needs and wanting nothing in return. There’s many ways someone can serve others, it can be from helping and elder clean their backyard to major projects like running activities to raise money for different causes. My role in service learning hasn’t been a lot. I have done a few fundraisers for my school to pay for the activities they have planned for us (the students) following orders from others. When I just joined JROTC at the beginning of the year, there was the opportunity to help the elementary school run their fall festival. To be honest, I first only did it because I needed the hours to get promoted and thought it would be annoying taking care of little kids. We practiced teamwork, leadership and how to follow directions. We had a lot of fun once everything was organized. There I helped running all the games, I hope I get the opportunity to help running another festival soon. Besides the opportunities JROTC offers for volunteering, there’s many others around our community. For example, I have volunteered at the thrift shop because they always have something they need help with. It can either be putting things in order around the …show more content…
Every end of the year during Christmas, we would all go to different schools with low resources or orphanages. The school planned most of the activities, all they needed was volunteers. The volunteers would buy a present, for girl or boy, and take it to the place assigned. Members from the school band would also volunteer to play Christmas carols to the kids. Once everyone was ready we went to the school or orphanage, give each kid their present, and spend some time with them while the band played the songs. In this schools there were a lot of kids, so it took hours to get done giving away the presents. There would still be so many presents left, those are the ones we gave to the kids in the
I equate service with helpfulness—assisting others. I help both my school community by answering questions and giving feedback and my community as a whole through my volunteer activities, the most enjoyable of which has been Habitat for Humanity.
Service; there are many different things that come into mind when you think of the term service. I use to think of the term as, in something needs to be serviced, something needs to be done or helped. PSL has changed my view on the term service and that their are many different things about service, its not just helping. Throughout my service experiences and resources I have learned its not about helping at all. Naomi Remen, author of In the Service of Life states “serving is different from helping. Helping is based on inequality; it is not a relationship between equals.” Serving is all about having that connection with someone and going in with an open mindset.
The best way to help others be better citizens is to be a better citizen yourself. Most of the teenagers in this generation have trouble serving others because it is too much work for them. In situations like those, JROTC is really helpful for the teenagers. When cadets clean up the trash from a creek, a river or a stream, we help lessen contamination and make the community better. Volunteering helps us cadets give back to the community. For me, volunteering seems one of the most rewarding opportunity. It also makes me consider the experience of the situation. It helps me work with others and be
However, most of my volunteer work comes from outside of the school, such as; Pelotonia, Light the Night for leukemia and lymphoma, Franklin County Board of Developmental Disabilities, etc. For many of these organizations I have volunteered more than once. Volunteering at Light the Night has a story. For my 16th Birthday party, I wanted to have my friends and I volunteer for the day while having fun at night. So I had 7 boys and girls, along with me, volunteer for Light the Night, organized by me.
The Organization The organization that I volunteered at was the Carroll County Food Pantry in Carrollton, Kentucky. This operation runs every Monday, Wednesday, Friday 3-5 p.m. for all community members, and on every third Wednesday 9:30 am-12: 30 pm specifically for the elderly. Throughout the week, the pantry gathers numerous volunteers. In fact, every month the local churches of Carroll County will rotate and work the food pantry on assigned days.
provide service to disadvantaged groups or public areas. While community service has numerous benefits, it only focuses on unidimensional service and caters to a current need setting nothing in place to implement substantial change in the future. In contrast, service learning focuses on reciprocity and sets a foundation to create changes in communities. Service learning is defined as an organized collaborative process that requires individuals to actively participate in service projects. Community service is often viewed as volunteerism rather than service learning. Individuals often times tend to establish barriers between the provider and the person receiving help and never focusing on gaining anything from the group or person being assisted.
As a human services professional, there are many skills that you must already have and that you must obtain as you grow in your career. Each school, because of government mandate, has to provide services for exceptional students. The textbook Human Diversity in Education defines exceptional students as “those eligible for special educational services” (Cushner, McClelland & Safford, 2011). There are several categories for exceptional student but they all fall under the Ability/Disability continuum. Some of the categories for exceptional students are the: intellectually gifted, specific learning disability, emotionally handicapped, hearing impaired, visually impaired, mentally handicapped, and physically handicapped. In this paper the specific type of students that will be discussed, fall under the disabled side of the continuum. As one can see from the list above there are various types of disabilities that can affect students. One of the disabilities that affect many students in schools today is known as the Learning Disability (LD). Students with learning disabilities, also known as specific learning disabilities, tend to be of at least average intelligence. Of at least average intelligence is the key phrase. A learning disability is defined as “a neurological disorder that affects the brain’s ability to receive, process, store, and respond to information” (National Center for Learning Disabilities,). Learning disabilities can affect students in the areas of listening, speaking, reading, writing and spelling, reasoning, and mathematics. A student that has a learning disability can at times suffer for a social anxiety. Though social anxiety can be something minor, for students with this disability 2011it can cause major problems. Their social anxiety is caused by fearing that they will not fit in because they are unable to understand or process the information a...
Kabat Zinn defines mindfulness as “a means of paying attention in a particular way, on purpose, in present moments, and in a non-judgmental way.” With depression on the rise, mindfulness is a wonderful tool for occupational therapy intervention (Hardison & Roll, 2016). After reading this report, you will be able to see the why mindfulness is an emerging practice in occupational therapy.
Service is when someone uses their skill and effort to enrich the wellbeing of others. It is an inherited trait of every individual to look after himself or herself. Service is a benevolent or an altruistic effort in which the benefits typically used for oneself are offered to another. Temple hospital offers community health workers to patients who are in need.
Finally I feel like I show service, which is the act of assistance, through my community service. I helped the school with the school play my freshman and sophomore years, working concession stands whenever I am able to, and helping the technology department at the school over the summer. I also help in other places in the community. For example every year I try to help put on a thanksgiving dinner for those in need with my church. This skill will help me throughout my life because it shows how important it is to help others.
Introduction A service learning experience is designed to enhance a student 's growth in personal and social development and to obtain an understanding of community involvement. For my service learning experience, I volunteered at Change Point Center. In this reflection paper, I will discuss in depth information about the services that Change Point provides, my goals while I was there, and what I ultimately learned from this experience. Information about this experience Change Point center is located in Hot Springs, Arkansas and is a non-profit organization. The role of the agency is to help women in crisis pregnancies as well as families that face crisis situations.
Today it seems as though Christmas has fallen victim to materialism and commercialization. Rather than it being a time of loving and giving, it has become a stressful season of greed. Amidst all the hustle and bustle, it is important for us to recognize the true reason of the season, and celebrate in a fashion that exemplifies that reason.
There are plenty of ways to keep the kids entertained this Christmas, so get the glitter, coloured paper, cotton wool, paper chains and any other arty bits together before the festive season. Buy all the ingredients for home made cakes and start thinking of recipes you could cook together. Then all you have to do is let the fun
The wreaths are hung, candy canes bought and the perfect tree is chosen by the youngest family member and brought home strapped onto the top of the family car. The Christmas trees is then placed in its dedicated spot in the house and wrapped with lights and decorated with ornaments. And under those decorations are the boxes with presents wrapped in festive colors, ordained with sparkly bows and gift tags signed by Santa. The freshly baked Christmas cookies and the egg nog fill the house with festive odors and Christmas cuisine tastes. All of these aspects of this holiday make it a magical celebration that indulges children as well as adults in all of the wonders of the holiday.
