The quote stated in the bible “Money is the root of all evil,” has been argued for many years. This statement is claiming that, the need of money can create a monster out of anyone. As in this story where the merchant is forced to make a decision due to the lack of money he owns. He chooses to sell his only son to a black dwarf to become rich. This trade will become the seed in turning his own child into a monster. Heinel does start off with a great heart, but due to a series of events it’s almost as if he’s forced to be a monster. Constantly, being the victim of each situation undoubtedly changes who Heinel starts off as and who he ends as in this story. He truly becomes the Monster of Golden Mountain. As the theory in “Serial Killers” by Andrew Cooper & Brandy Bale Blake, shows that growing up in bad environments can potentially make a monster out of anybody. …show more content…
A good example is after the merchant makes the deal with the dwarf and comes home to do his deed. The reaction of his son “But as he drew near home, his little boy was so glad to see him that he crept behind him, and laid fast hold of his legs, and looked up in his face and laughed “(Grimm Brothers 1). This shows the love he has for his father at the beginning of the story. As Heinel grew older he still loved and cared for his father. Even after the Heinel found out that his father has sold him the dwarf; He remains positive and said 'Father, give yourself very little trouble about that; I shall be too much for the little man “(Grimm Brothers 2). Trying to give him farther hope even after finding the news. Although, Heinel shows bravery and understanding in this situation he also feels let down. This is the first impactful event in Heinel’s life that will eventually make him become the monster he
The Killings by Andre Dubus Plot is defined as, "the authors arrangement of incidents in a story it is the organizing principle that controls the controls the order of events (Meyer,64). " The element of plot is heavily relied on in the short story, "The Killings" by Andre Dubus. The plot which is completely made inside the imagination of an author (Meyer,64), gives the audience important insight to people, places, and events in the story (Meyer,64) . "The Killings" provides a somewhat conventional plot pattern, where the character is confronted with a problem and is then led into a climax, which late leads to the resolution of the story (Meyer,65). The conventional plot is easy to follow and serves as a basis for movies and other forms of fictitious entertainment (Meyer,65).
“Killings” by Andrew Dubus is a short story about revenge and love. There is no single way to state the theme of a story, but Dubus gives the reader detailed clues. A theme is a meaning behind a story and can sometimes be explained as the moral of a story. Dubus ties two different themes together, while giving the reader a better understanding of the characters. Matt Fowler and Richard Strout commit the crime of murder for two different reasons, but both end with consequences and regret.

Ever wonder what is going on in the mind of a murderer? One piece of literature that centers around murderers is And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie. The story takes place in the 1930’s on Soldier Island. Ten strangers trapped on the island are one by one killed off in accordance with the poem Ten Little Soldiers. The Tell-Tale Heart, Cask of Amontillado, and Murderers are all literary works that give insight into the mind of a murderer like Christie’s classic book.
The media generally portrays the prototypical serial killer through the lens of two extremes. They can either have an incapacitating mental illness or be brilliant, but severely troubled, geniuses. Yet, neither of these two stereotypes are accurate, as serial killers generally display signs of psychopathy, which is not considered a mental illness by the American Psychiatric Association. Despite the erroneousness of Hollywood’s movies and television shows, many psychologists and lawmakers are still considering the degree to which psychopaths can be considered responsible for their actions. In “Psychopathy and Culpability: How Responsible Is the Psychopath for Criminal Wrongdoing?” researchers Adam R. Fox, Trevor H. Kvaran, and Reid Griffith Fontaine attempt to draw conclusions from evidence on whether or not psychopaths meet the criteria for full criminal responsibility. Other researchers, such as Scott E. Culhane, Sage M. Hilstad, Adrienne Greng, and Matt J. Gray, use a case study to demonstrate that psychopathy is not synonymous with serial killers and that mental illness cannot necessarily be used in criminal cases to justify murder in their research paper titled “Self-Reported Psychopathology in a Convicted Serial Killer.” In the remaining two articles
What drives a person past insanity? What drives an individual to feel no remorse, but rather a psychological relief in murderous acts? Consider all the different types of people on Earth as well as the lifestyles and situations these people are raised up in. As much as it’s desired to think the world is filled with people who carry no such thing as a bad bone in their bodies, that thought process is simple deception. The fact is that psychopaths and sociopaths hide among others in everyday environments - neighbors, teachers, family members, doctors, friends, or even the local mailman. Psychopaths are declared as people who suffer from a mental disorder causing aggression and abnormal behaviors such as their “lack of
According to the Oxford Dictionary; a serial killer is a person who commits a series of murders, often with no apparent motive and typically following a characteristic, predictable behavior pattern. They usually go through a cooling down period where there are no murders. Then start the killing spree back up again after the cooling down period. The killing spree usually doesn’t last more than a couple of years without the murderer being caught. And there is usually a victim type and killing style which leads to the killer being identified. This is the definition of a serial killer so why is it so commonly believed that this is a male dominated area. “However, if, as seems to be the case in many countries, the only

Holmes was first charged with insurance fraud, and then the murder of Benjamin Pitezel (H.H. Holmes Biography, 2015). He was never charged with the deaths of any of his victims in Chicago due to the inability to positively identify any victims (H.H. Holmes, 2004). Holmes gave numerous stories to police about what happened in “The Murder Castle”, and admitted to at least 27 murders, but again, the exact number is not known.
