Serial killers have been a cause of concern since the dawn of the civilized world. A serial killer is traditionally defined as someone who kills more than three people in a time span of over a month. Even though we can put a definition on the term “serial killer” it is a blanket term used for all people that kill. However, there are many types of killers out there such as cannibals, cult killers, and mercy killers; all three very different, but kill for the same season of personal gratification.
Cannibalism has been in practice since before the Persian empire and has been enticing people of all different cultures. Cannibalism can be defined as the act of killing and eating the flesh of the victim, it is also known as anthropology. Cannibalism is perhaps the ultimate cultural taboo. There are many reasons why humans partake in this practice; for cultural purposes, for survival or even for pleasure. Throughout the modern world there have been many counts of serial killer cannibals. The name Jeffrey Dahmer has become a household name since his crimes were brought to public eyes between the years of 1978 and 1991; he was known as the Milwaukee Cannibal. During his 13 years on the loose, he murdered 17 males that we know of. He was known to rape, dismember, and practice necrophilia; however, some say that he is most well known for cannibalizing his young boys. Jeffrey Dahmer has proclaimed to have eaten every part of the human body. He stewed his victims and fed his soup to his family and his church. They are many in number and in type. They are creative in their killing ways, whether they admit to knowing what they are doing or not. So whether they kill for mercy, the thrill, or even for religious purposes, they still kill without boundaries and that is why they have fascinated the cultures and plagued them since the beginning of time.

He chose serial killer as the name to describe a killer that murders three or more victims over a period of time because the FBI were always studying a series of cases created by the killers (Freeman, 2007). Serial killers have been around for centuries, since ancient times. There have been many studies done to try and figure out how the minds of serial killers work, so the FBI can catch them and find a way to stop them. Not all serial killers are the same, this makes it hard to figure them out and provide a clear definition of how their minds work. Most serial killers have similar character traits and can be classified into different categories to make it easier to find patterns and reasons as to why they are killing.
From 1987 to 1991, Jeffrey Dahmer reign terror over the gay community. He was a social incompetent, homosexual man. His spent his entire life feeling as an outcast in this giant world and struggled to find his voice and his sense of self. He resorted to dead rodents and mannequins to bring him entertainment and companionship. Eventually, Dahmer thirst for more and when his abuse of alcohol could no longer medicate him he allowed his gruesome fantasies and needs to take control.
In order to identify serial killers before they kill repeatedly, a person needs to study the characteristics that makes up this type of criminals. Most serial killers have been abandoned, by one or both parents, they are emotionally, physically, and even sexually abused by a family member, or relatives from unstable families who have criminal, psychiatric and alcoholic histories, or tend to have hate for their parents and people in general which makes them have antisocial personality disorder. They have conflicted pain or tortured animals at a young age and most are highly interested in gaining control over things. Even though not every serial killers posses these characteristics, but most share these characteristics the same way they share the psychological need to have complete control and power over people.
