How does the role of self respect come into play when Hamlet is dealing with injustice? Hamlet lost all of his self respect when he found out his father was murdered and he wanted to get revenge (justice) for his father. Hamlet believes that there will be no true form of justice for the murder of his father. He believes that he must take matters into his own hands and avenge his father's death. Self-respect will often not be a priority when one is trying to deal with injustice. Hamlet doesn’t know how to cope with his father's death and then starts to lose his self respect when he finds out his father is murdered by his uncle. This results in Hamlet losing his self of steam and bringing him thoughts of suicide. He knows that if he kills himself he doesn’t know what will happen to him, but he knows what will happen to him if he stays living. He starts to become very depressed with the passing of his father and now that his mother and uncle are a couple. He starts to contemplate suicide “O, that this too too sullied flesh would melt, thaw, and resolve itself into a dew!” (1/2/129-130/pg.31) as an easy way out of his “horrible” life. He doesn’t want to live and believe he has no reason to live. But when talking to his father's ghost he comes to realize that he knows what he has to deal with in this life but if he kills himself he will not know the horrors that he will have to deal with on the other side. His lack of self of steam and the desire to avenge his father's death makes him take the injustice of his father into his own hands and wants to make sure his uncle pays for his actions. Although hamlet has a goal in place to take care of his father's injustice, he loses sight of what is important to him and brings on his downfall
