Balancing work and family life will be an important part of self-care. As I enter the world of medicine, I am expecting to experience some of the most wonderful and agonizing moments of my life. Playing a part in the lives of others is beautiful, but messy, and self-care is essential to good medicine. My radiology rotation, hospice rotation, class discussions, and assigned readings have all contributed to my new understanding of the importance of doing things I enjoy outside of the realm of medicine.
It was evident that the radiologists that I shadowed were both experiencing burn out. After being bombarded with multiple CT scans from the emergency department, they expressed their frustration about reading unnecessary scans. They advised me not to choose radiology and to really make sure medicine was what I want to dedicate my life to. Spending countless hours in a dark room reading images and then returning home to adult

I will take to heart what Dr. Barron said about feeling worse about oneself as a result of comparing oneself to others. As I move forward in my pursuit of medicine, I hope to break this bad habit. I will strive to do my best and to compete with myself instead of my peers. During my senior year of college, I plan to refrain from discussing grades with friends and to occupy my time focusing on improving myself. One interesting fact that I was unaware of until Micah mentioned in class is that some medical schools have done away with the ranking system. I hope to attend a medical school that practices this policy because I believe it would prevent me from being harsh on myself for not being in the percentile I would like. Doing my best to learn the material should be my goal, and I hope to stop being concerned by how others are doing. Instead of being worried about being the best, I will practice humility and simply try my
D1: I have decided to look at a 6 year old going through bereavement. Bereavement means to lose an individual very close to you. When children go through bereavement they are most likely to feel sad and upset about the person’s death. Children at a young age may not understand when a family member dies. Children may not understand bereavement. For example a 6 year old’s father been in a car crash and has died from that incident. Death is unpredictable and children can’t be prepared for a death of a family member as no one knows when someone is going to die or not. Unfortunately every child can experience bereavement even when a pet dies. It is important that we are aware that effects on the child so we can support them in the aftermath.
This entails that the professional nurse provide not only ordinary but extraordinary care and support to make it possible for these individuals to achieve their requirements for self-care. Furthermore, the professional nurse judiciously and collaboratively partakes in the individual’s health care provided by the medical doctor. Dorthea Orem understood that individuals possess the natural capability of self-care, and nurses have a duty to place emphasis on enhancing that capability. Nurses who deliver direct care can support these capabilities by offering learning opportunities and teaching methods that enhance self-care activities, therefore contributing a positive and encouraging influence on the individuals and caregivers quality of
...to communicate with your patient in order for them to be updated with their family’s sickness. And also have compassion towards them. You are likely to see a lot of injuries and scenarios play out among patients that have been admitted to the hospital. There are many achievements in this field that you may accomplish. And priorities that you have to deal with. For instants your time you have to adjust your schedule.
Modern medicine is capable of treating a tremendous range of human disease and injuries, but the usefulness of all medical specialties depends on accurate diagnosis. Virtually every conceivable medical specialty relies on radiological technologies to provide formal diagnoses, making radiology one of the most important of all medical specialties. Radiologists enjoy some of the best working conditions in modern medicine and typically experience very positive employment conditions. Consequently, their services are generally in very high demand, with many starting out with six-figure annual incomes immediately after completion of their professional training.

A nurse is able to achieve this great balance, with the patient and self, by being conscious of the environment that surrounds them and through self awareness. For example, in the scene of an emergency, first and foremost, a nurse must check the environment before started emergent care. Both the patient and nurse must be safe for treatment to be effective. The environment is what surrounds us; our workplace, home, communities, issues we think about, the people we interact with, and the emotions associated with these interactions. The nurse knows that all of these components play an integral role in maintaining stability in a person’s life and health. The nurse assumes care of not just a disease process but of a human being as a whole; a family, a livelihood, a spirit, a person. A nurse knows that in order for holistic care to be effective, the care taker themselves should be at a point of stability as well. A true nurse knows that in order to excel you must know your limits and understand that while your main goal is to help the patient regain their strength, identity, and independence, that goal does not have to be achieved by compromising your own self, identity, and
...ly normative, but dynamic, pervasive, and individual” (p. 464). When I realized this, I realized that I had a purpose in this aspect of patient care.
Emotional intelligence and reflective practice are integral components of building a therapeutic relationship in nursing
“Life is a balanced system of learning, adjusting, and evolving. Whether pleasure or pain; every situation in your life serves a purpose. It is up to us to recognize what that purpose could be.” - Dr. Steve Maraboli
Since I was young, I always wanted to become a doctor. I would always get excited when I would go to the doctor's office, which is rare for a young kid. Little did I know, my dreams were crushed when I found out the extensive amount of school required to become a doctor. We all know that more years in college, means more money accumulating towards student loans. During my junior year in high school, I enrolled in a few medical related courses. I discovered a variety of health careers that didn’t require more than 4 years of post-secondary education. One career caught my eye: radiation therapy. My interest became bigger and bigger each time I learned more about radiation therapy. Radiation therapist’s work with cancer patients by delivering
Self awareness in nursing refers to how glowing nurses comprehend themselves, their strengths, weaknesses, attitude and ethics in order to better transact with their patients. Self- awareness includes review of self, together with self confidence. Self -regulation express beyond one`s emotion and being trustworthy. For nurses to be able to empathize with their patients and treat them with compassion, they have to be self aware. When nurses are self aware, they are capable to adapt to, or certainly change their attitudes and deed in order to understand how unusual people take care of them hence improving the nurse- patient relationship. Nurses must reflect carefully on whether they can sustain in dependence in caring for a client and whether the relationship interferes with gathering the client’s needs. It is also essential to be sure that providing care to family and friends does not interfere with the care of other clients or with the dynamics of the health care group. Before making the conclusion, the nurse may possibly wish to discuss the situation with colleagues and the employer.
My interest in nursing began at age 18 at Bridgeport Hospital in Connecticut where I was trained as a Certified Care Partner, then as a Phlebotomist, followed by a two year surgical floor assignment and a one year burn unit stint.
Self-care often goes over looked. However, it could be one of the most important things a healthcare professional can do for themselves and the patients. Working in healthcare often consists of long hours and lots of brain power. Your mind is always on and you are always on high alert. That can be taxing on our minds, bodies, and souls. This is where self-care comes into play. Decompression can look like many things. I some play golf. Others take bi-monthly trips to the massage parlor. Some people seek solace in prayer and meditation. It is important to understand that self-care is not limited to people who hold huge responsibilities. These are techniques everyone should utilize as much as possible.
Self-care is a necessary practice in everyone’s life. This practice allows people to relax and replenished themselves. The first time I heard of this term was in during one of my social work classes. As we began to discuss self-care it became clear, that without proper self-care people, not just social workers are doing themselves a disservice. Self-care encompasses more than general rest. Self-care deals with emotional wellbeing, good health and spiritual wellbeing. All of these areas are key to having good self-care. The reading provides a good description self-care, it stated that self-care is achieving an equilibrium across our personal school and work lives. Achieving equilibrium in my personal life will only increase my ability to support and help others.
Self-care has many definitions, to me, I think self-care is the act of doing things that help decrease stress and improve the quality of life. Understanding self-care is really important in a lot of career fields but I believe the medical field demands more of the people who work in it. What I mean by this is you will see and do things that will leave you exhausted. If you do not know how to decrease that stress and exhaustion you will be burnt out very quickly. I have seen burn out happen to the most caring health care professional and it is always sad to see.
