The internet and the World Wide Web are arguably the greatest inventions of our time. The effects of the internet are deeply pervasive now influencing almost every sphere of our lives. The internet has revolutionized the way we communicate, conduct business, relate with each other, entertain, educate and retrieve information. With the touch of a button, we can now communicate face to face with friends and relatives miles away. The internet has also provided an efficient medium for sharing large volumes of information at low cost. Most businesses now depend on the internet for the smooth running of operations. Other businesses are internet-based, meaning that the internet provides the platform on which they operate. Individuals regard the internet highly because of the benefits of entertainment and communication. The development and advancements of the internet and internet technologies have for instance led to the invention of social media platforms. People have gotten so hooked to social media that one cannot imagine the misery if internet were to become extinct. The internet has had profound effects on the lives we live and on the quality of life. The internet provides an efficient means of handling a variety of everyday activities efficiently thus saving on costs and enabling us to do more. One cannot exhaust the benefits that the internet has on everyday life. With all the benefits highlighted, it is difficult to imagine that there is a dark side to the internet (Minhas, 2004, p. 93). There are issues with the internet regarding security, ethics and the law.
