The Internet: a game changer? Developed during the last decades of the 20th century, the Internet has now become a part of our everyday lives. Having grown up with the Internet, I have seen how it gradually became an essential tool of our modern society and having read an article about the changes brought by the Internet recently, it made me thinking about its real impact which is often overlooked because of how gradual the changes were. It also reminded me of my lessons of philosophy about technology in high school. What is the Internet currently? The Internet is huge global network of computers and more broadly digital devices but its use remains the same from the beginning: the exchange of information, the only difference being the astonishing amount of data currently available and the extensive use of it. It enable people to share files from all around the world and from this point of view it can be considered as an incredible area of freedom. Amidst the numerous use of the Internet, I would like to discuss more specifically about social networks because they can symbolize our ‘’digitalized ‘’ society in an especially striking way according to me. Social networks such as Facebook or even YouTube or LinkedIn are interesting because they show how the Internet broaden our possibilities, distance has become an irrelevant restrictive factor and you can share things with numerous people for example. However from this point on we can see that the Internet tends to modify the objects of our social interactions: what is shared on the Internet is dematerialized and in order to be shared on the Internet, more and more we tend to digitalize things and that is precisely a double edged sword, we are more and more bound to the Internet t... ... middle of paper ... ...the ethical values but too often citizens are not informed enough. On the contrary according to me the Internet is growing social and ethical issue. Then it makes it clear that understanding programming or Internet systems is a key to master the Internet instead of being ruled by the Internet. However too often, there is a lack of interest and those who got the technical skills disregard their responsibilities, preferring to work for big companies. It is also up to each society to consider the growing issue of online privacy. Nevertheless the Internet is also a vector of active democratic involvement. It was the case with hackers helping the Arab spring by giving encrypted and protected access to Internet. To sum up, issues about the Internet are at the heart of our modern and connected society, it will shape our future and that is why they should not be neglected.
Science and technology go hand in hand. Scientific discoveries result in technology advancements for the people. In today’s technological world, it has progressed to a whole new level. This type of modernization opened doors for new and improved computers, cell phones, medical treatment, and machinery. In a reference article, “Computers and the Internet in America: Modern World” by Christopher Cumo, he discusses how computers and the internet have impacted human life since the 20th century. Technology has always been a part of society and as
As capitalism runs its course and develops new technologies, society is left to pick up the pieces and figure out where these new technologies will lead them. Ever since I learned to use the Internet as a child, I have become accustomed to seeing more and more fascinating technology developments that have changed the way I communicated as the years went by. Now that the Internet has infiltrated more aspects of human life, it has become necessary to reflect on how this critical juncture will continue to affect our society. In Digital Disconnect, Robert McChesney provides an analysis of the arguments that the celebrants and skeptics used to express their views of the Internet. McChesney then moves past these arguments to explain how the PEC plays a key role in determining the direction that the Internet is heading towards. By assessing McChesney’s views, I hope to develop my own interpretation of the Internet’s impact on society.
Many believe the internet was an over night sensation, that one day, someone invented the internet and it spread in popularity faster than Tickle Me Elmo or the Macarena. Although the internet did have a surge of commercial popularity, with the invention of Mosaic and later with e-commerce, it was created many years ago with the development of military networking technologies. Also, the internet, unlike many pop culture fads of the nineties, will continue to see a growth in popularity and usefulness as a form of media throughout the information age. Sure, the internet became overambitious to the point where many internet start-up companies lost their businesses in the recession of the past few years. The quality of the internet, however, has increased as companies realize that there exists competition and smarter consumers that demand superiority. The internet has taken the world so far in its short commercial life; the future of the internet provides limitless possibilities of a much different future.
Internet as a medium has been a thoroughly discussed topic, especially in recent years with the rise of the World Wide Web. Analysis of relevant literature in the topic shows that the internet is not a new medium. This argument can be shown by looking more in depth into what defines a medium and what defines the internet. From that analysis by looking from a historical point of view the internet can be seen as an old medium which uses re-mediation to deliver content to users. The connection between internet and its users has helped the internet influence the way media is viewed today. Although the internet is not a new medium the content it presents is new. The advances in technology have helped the use of the internet reach new heights in terms of interest and it's capabilities are now being utilised by the masses. This rise in popularity has given the implication that the internet is new. These points can be analysed in more depth which has led me to take the stance that the internet is not a new medium.
The internet is a magnificent tool that we use in many aspects of our society. It has been very helpful in regards to business, education, socialization, recreation and so much more. The internet has also been very harmful in regards to all those things as well, even communication. We are discussing the social aspects of the internet and their positive and negative effects.
The "Information Superhighway", or internet, is a powerful medium for today's information driven society. From it's humble beginnings as a series of networks established to help the military and government share resources, it has become a place for people to engage in commerce and also for people to interact socially in both business and personal faculties. Along with the excellent opportunities for meaningful communication in this new atmosphere, the Internet has evolved as an open, democratic cybersociety marked by free speech and volunteerism. It is a community gathering place for people to share ideas, concerns, stories and opinions, and to give help and assistance to one another. (Mills-Scofield) There has also arisen a series of problems. Whenever any major development in society is conceived, such as when telephones were introduced, problems ensue. The Internet, because of it's modern nature is not really well dealt with when it comes to existing ethical and moral issues. Being that the Internet has fostered a new class of community that requires a unique category of moral values and ethical considerations. Things are always going to be dealt with differently when it comes to any revolutionary type of medium. For instance how can interstate trade be regulated by the federal government when it is electronically transmitted information? It is a whole new category, How could the constitution have predicted? Although there are many differences, The Internet mirrors today's society to a large degree, with its blend of good and bad. Many of the issues facing the U.S. and the world, such as those related to race or gender, for example, are also issues on the Internet. And various subcultures, such as militias, GenX and philosophical movements, are represented. (Mills- Scofield) They go on further to say, Like all societies, the Internet has its unwritten rules--its"netiquette.
What The Internet Has Made Us The internet is a vast place to help expand your knowledge. However, at the same time it can be a very distracting place where one will lose themselves in it. People tend to get hooked on social media website like Facebook, Snapchat, Twitter, YouTube and other large sites. Due to the increase of technology like the internet, it causes people to change even if they don’t notice it.
The internet has revolutionized the computer and communication’s world like nothing before. With the invention of the telephone, radio, and the computer people have been enthralled with these
The Internet is a conglomeration of worldwide networks linked together, which we as users have public access to. In the beginning the Internet consisted of “four main computers linked together, which they called the ARPANTET”(Shelly-Casham, 7.3). Today, the Internet ranges across the globe, containing information far beyond that of which it’s creators ever imagined. To date, the Internet contains information on almost any subject ever imagined. Advantages of the Internet are its speed, capacity, and low cost. These characteristics are the ingredients to the reformation of our society, as technology advances, people have become more eager to receive the most possible, in the least amount of time for the lowest amount of cost. The Internet has allowed our world not only to expand, but also has added some unique twists to the world we now live in. Today, our society has entered the “Information Superhighway”. The use of the Internet in our day to day life mainly is based on our goals and desires. Our daily life is innovated through the interaction
Technology nowadays has an influence on our lives, it has affected everything in it. When this technological revolution started, we didn't expect that it would affect our emotions, and our feelings. All we expected is that technology would develop our ability to have easier life and control nature. But what really happened is that the technology started to be part of us that we can't live without. The Internet is one of the technologies that appeared in our lives, and now it is dominating our lives.
Days, months, and years go by and we do not notice them. Living in such a busy world, we are not always aware of the changes in our lives. Twenty years ago, if someone was told we would be able to buy groceries, pay our bills, buy stocks or even a car through the use of a computer, we might have laughed and blamed too much science fiction television for such wild accusations. However, as the next generation of children grows up, they may find it funny that people still send letters to each other through the post office. The development of the Internet has given us the ability to communicate and exchange information instantly across vast distances. The Internet has caused a huge impact in the communication field, and has made our way of living and working a lot easier, faster, and cheaper than before.
In conclusion, the Internet has built up our society, but it could also tear it down with a major Internet black out. The Internet offers great opportunities for technological advancement. It has created a new way of personal, social, and business interactions. I believe the Internet was one of the best creations of time and I cannot wait to see what is in store for the future of the Internet and its relationship with human kind.
The internet has influenced, and is still influencing the way society communicates in many different ways. The rise of the internet has caused people to communicate differently in areas never dreamed of before the internet came into existence. Education has been revolutionized through the world of the “Information Super Highway”. Medicine has also seen reform as the internet improves research and communication. Individuals are starting businesses from scratch, while others are selling household items for extra cash. This internet “typhoon” sweeping the globe has become a way of life for many individuals all across the globe.
The influence of the electronic devices, multimedia and computers are the things that dealt with our daily life. Especially the internet that is now giving more importance to each and every one, by giving the newest outstanding media that surely will give the outmost future ahead of us. (Temmel)
