Many people dream of attending school at a University of California (UC) campus for only their dreams to be crushed when they find out that they are unable to pay such expensive tuition. The University of California (UC) system has been increasing tuitions every year. Many people planning on attending a UC campus find themselves unable to do so because they have no capability to pay for their education. Unfortunately, the California auditor recently discovered that UC President, Janet Napolitano had been hiding school funding in a secret savings account that has recently been discovered. Recently, in a state audit, or the state’s inspection on an account, the state of California discovered that the UC system had a secret savings account. According to the article “California Auditor Slams UC President’s Office Over $175 Million in Hidden Funds” from two writers from The Mercury News, Katy Murphy and Tracy Seipel, state, “A scathing state audit Tuesday accused University of California President Janet Napolitano’s office of hiding tens of millions of dollars in reserves- even from its own board of regents- and creating a secret spending plan, while also padding the salaries and benefits of her staff,” (Murphy). The UC President Janet Napolitano had been keeping school funding from the state of California and storing it in a secret savings account to host big retirement parties and special bonuses for her staff. Those funds should have been used to help fund the UC schools and help lower tuition for students. Janet Napolitano used her power as the President of the University of California system to determine how the funds received by the California taxes were to be distributed to the UC schools. Over the past couple of years, there have been many increases in tuition for students planning or who currently attend any University of California campus. According to Kate Pickert, in her article “University of California System Approves Steep Tuition Hike”, she states, “Tuition at UC campuses has more than tripled since 2001, even without the increase just approved,” (Pickert). As students and taxpayers struggle to have money for their expenses, the campus facilities for the campuses of the University of California indulge on the funds that are supposed to help lower tuition costs for students.
