The civil rights movement of the 1960s led to a movement in the south that was known as the “second reconstruction”. This commonly held belief can be proven to be an accurate statement as shown by northerners wagging a moral finger at the south despite being racist themselves, although to a much less violent and hateful extent, Blacks being threatened against voting by whites, as well as an overall hateful tension between both sides of the “reconstruction”. The “second reconstruction” is an accurate statement as a result of the north acting as if they are morally superior to the south despite holding racist views themselves.The North, after seeing the brutality that was displayed in the murder of emmett till, was shocked and in disbelief at the treatment of african americans; however, it wasn't until two white men were killed trying to forward the cause of the civil rights movement in the south that northern politicians tried to change anything. This is similar to the first reconstruction in which carpetbaggers from the north would try to help free the former slaves fully from the oppressive society in which they lived but still the majority …show more content…

The KKK was founded in response to the first reconstruction and was destroyed later by president Grant, however the Klan resurfaced as a result of this second reconstruction with the same aim as the original group; keep white spaces free of african americans. The klan along with other hate groups attempted to scare blacks into subservience and keep them away from the polls where they could change to social climate by electing black officials, this happened in both the first and second reconstructions showing another similarity between the two
