The Second Party System consisted of two different parties, the Whigs and the Democrats. There were many differences between the Whigs and Democratic parties. The Whigs were suspicious of rapid westward expansion and pushed for commercial development. While the Democrats embraced westward expansion’s opportunities for independent landownership. The Whigs pushed for an activist government. The Democrats wanted a limited government. Whigs wanted corporate charters, national banks and paper money, the Democrats did not want any of these. Whigs believed in harmony within all classes however the democrats believed in splitting the classes. Whigs also believed in prisons, public schools and the general welfare of people.
